A pool heater must have a circulating pump in it right? There fore a motor/pump in it..or am I wrong ..is this a non electric pump / strictly mechanical?

I’ve been known to make snowflakes whine!Posts may contain sarcasm and guttural humor!

Most pool heater do not have any pumps inside but they have a flow switch inside the heater and some models do have interlock switch so if the pool pump is running then the heater can kick in.is this heater is straight electric or gas fired heater ? and yes put GFCI on that.

Thanx for input. It is a 240 volt minimum fuse 40 ampsMaximum OCP is 50 amps.I am thinking of using a Eaton CH 50 amp GFCI disconnect on house and then underground pipe w/ 6 awg thhn in pipe to a240 volt fused disconnect / fused a 40 amps.I want the Eaton ch disconnect cause it will also accomodatea separate 120 volt circuit for the 120 volt 20 amp pool pumpwhich is cord & plug connected at 5′ off pool base . I’m runningseparate conduits for the two circuitsWhat could it hurt to GFCI heater?

How Much Will It Cost

It is quite easy to determine the cost per day, The formula is Power X Hours per day X Price Per KW. For this scenario we are going to use a K5 , for 24 hours at an estimated $0.06 per KW. 5 KW X 24 Hours X .06 = $7.20 to run this unit, per day. This is actually an unrealistic price as once the pool is heated the unit will turn the heating elements on and off to maintain the temperature of the water rather then running at full power all the time.

Top 4 Benefits Of Using An Electric Pool Heater

Best Pool Heater Reviews

An electric pool heater is one of the most popular devices for keeping pool water warm during the winter. Also known as a heat pump, an electric pool heater warms up your pool by sucking some water into a heating tank and then pumping the warm water back into your pool. The constant exchange of warm and cold water keeps your pool fit for swimming even during the winter.

When researching a method of heating the water in your swimming pool you will find different systems, all have their advantages and disadvantages, in this article we will discuss water-source heat pumps and air source heat pumps. We hope this helps you make an educated decision.

A water-source heater transfers heat from a body of water to your pool . Because a water-source heater relies solely on heat from a water source, it operates independently of air temperature.

Water-source heaters greatly benefit pool owners who live in colder climates because they can provide for comfortable swimming even during fall and winter months.

Some air-source heaters can be used to both heat and cool your swimming pool. These heaters are referred to as reverse-cycle heat pumps, or chillers. As its name suggests, a reverse-cycle heat pump cools your swimming pool by reversing its refrigeration cycle. By heating your swimming pool during winter months and cooling your pool during summer months, a reverse-cycle heat pump ensures that your swimming pool maintains comfortable swimming temperatures year round.

Electric Heat Pump And Electric Heater: Whats The Difference

At first sight, it can be confusing, what is the difference between heat pumps and electric heaters, since they both need electricity to operate?

The fundamental difference is in the principle of operation. The heat pump transfers the heat from the surrounding using electric current while the electric heater produces heat . What does this mean? That means that heat pumps are more efficient and will not cost a lot for operation, they are 6 times cheaper to run than electric heaters. But heat pumps need a constantly high air temperature to operate and will heat the water 2 times slower than electric heaters.

Advantages Of Pool Heat Pumps

  • Theyre very energy efficient, up to 5 to 10 times more efficient than gas or electric resistance pool heathers!
  • No combustion involved, so its extremely safe
  • Less environmental impact due to its efficiency
  • Extremely long life, even longer than those of solar pool heaters
  • Low-maintenance
  • Excellent option for constant pool heating

The Good The Bad And The Toasty

They also use a lot of electricity to get the job done, so youre going to notice a jump in your electric bill when you use it. Depending upon your climate, you may not have many other options to heat your pool. The advantage of a pure electric heater is that they work in all temperatures.

Electric pool heaters are typically ideal for spa owners since there is less water to heat. However, if youre not worried about your utility bill and you want warm water fast, these can be a good option.

When choosing one for your pool, youll want to pay close attention to the wattage they use. They can cost anywhere between $3-$10 per hour to run.

Pros:

  • Cheaper initial expense than other options
  • Ideal for spas, rather than pools
  • They work in all temperatures

Cons:

  • Use more electricity, causing higher utility bills over time
  • Less energy-efficient overall
  • Have lots of component parts, may need frequent repair

How Do Heat And Cool Pool Heat Pumps Work

Make a Pool Heater – $25 Solar Pool Heater

Heat-Cool units have a unique reversing cycle which enables the pool heat pump not only to take the chill out of the water, but also to put it back in, cooling your pool water during the hot summer months!

Usually a pool heat pump will capture heat energy from the air with the evaporator coil. Using refrigerant and several other components, the heat is transferred over to your pool water. By reversing this process, the pool heat pump can actually take heat out of the water, transfer it to the Freon, and run it through the evaporator coil. The coil releases the heat into the outside air. In colder conditions, a standard pool heat pump will freeze up when the ambient air drops below 50 degrees. With a Heat-Cool unit, the reversing valve will allow the pool heat pump to defrost itself, which enable the unit to continue heating at much lower ambient air temps.

What Are Pool Heater Thermal Units

As with other household and outdoor products that generate heat, such as gas ranges, for example, all pool heaters are sized by British Thermal Unit . As a rough calculation, it takes one BTU to increase the temperature of 1lb of water by one degree Fahrenheit.

The best pool heaters vary from 75,000 BTU up to a whopping, commercial grade 450,000 BTU for really big pools, and obviously the higher the BTU, the more expensive the pool heater.

How Do You Best Maintain A Pool Heater

To maintain a gas pool heater, you should check the burner inputs for debris. Keep them clear of leaves, cobwebs, and accumulated dirt. If you have a propane pool heater, routinely check the tank gauge to ensure that you have enough propane for operation. For both propane and gas pool heaters, check the fuel lines for leaks. To do so, mix up some dish soap and water in a spray bottle. Apply the mixture to joints in the fuel line. If bubbles appear, you likely have a leak and repairs should be made right away.

For electric pool heaters, turn off the power supply and open the cabinet to safely remove the elements inside. Scrub any debris or corrosion with a wire brush to ensure optimal operation.

With any type of pool heater, you should read the owners manual and take special note of any maintenance instructions specific to your system. Follow the steps for routine maintenance to ensure a long life of service from your pool heater.

Combining Different Types Of Pool Heaters

One thing that some pool owners do is to combine solar pool heaters with either a gas pool heater or a pool heat pump. By combining different types of pool heaters, we can actually take care of the disadvantages while still reaping all of the benefits of both! Any combination can actually work if you look at it.

  • Solar Pool Heater + Gas Pool Heater = Fast Start Up while the solar pool heater maintains the temperature of the pool
  • Solar Pool Heater + Electric Pool Heater / Pool Heat Pump = Accelerated heating times due to having multiple sources of heat and very low cost of maintaining temperature
  • Gas Pool Heater + Electric Pool Heater / Pool Heat Pump = Fast Start Up time while the pool heat pump maintains the temperature

When Are Gas Pool Heaters Recommended

How to make a pool heater under $100

There are some situations where Gas Pool Heaters can be a good idea. Given that they may become costly to operate on a constant basis, gas pool heaters are perfect for those who like to use their pools on a scheduled basis. I.e. If you like to swim at certain times at certain days, you can simply set your gas pool heater to heat up your pool based on that schedule. This means that youre only heating the pool when you need it. But if your pool sees constant use or you would like to keep your pool warm constantly then other options may be better, like a solar pool heater or an energy efficient pool heat pump.

Gas pool heaters are also recommended for heating small spas. Since theyre quite powerful, they can easily heat up a spa in almost no time at all!

Heating Options For Above Ground Swimming Pool

These pool heaters use different heating options. The first one is the gas-powered heater. The gas is combusted to generate heat which will be transferred to the water as it passes by the combustion chamber. The other option is the electric heat pump which warms the water by extracting heat from the air. The last option is the solar panel heating system that works by collecting sunlight thermal energy which will be used to heat the water.

How Long Do Pool Heaters Last

Investing in a pool heater can be a costly business, and youre probably trying to factor in just how much use you can get from this purchase over the years. The good news is that pool heaters are designed to last between seven to ten years, so you shouldnt have to fork out on a new one anytime soon. However, the lifespan of your pool heater is of course dependent on how well its maintained, as well as how healthy your pool water is. Getting into a good routine with pool cleaning is essential, as well as keeping an eye on chemical levels below the surface.

Sizing A Heat Pump Pool Heater

You should have a trained pool professional perform a proper sizing analysis for your specific pool to determine pool heater size.

Sizing a heat pump pool heater involves many factors. Basically, a heater is sized according to the surface area of the pool and the difference between the pool and the average air temperatures. Other factors also affect the heating load for outdoor pools, such as wind exposure, humidity levels, and cool night temperatures. Therefore, pools located in areas with higher average wind speeds at the pool surface, lower humidity, and cool nights will require a larger heater.

Heat pump pool heaters are rated by Btu output and horsepower . Standard sizes include 3.5 hp/75,000 Btu, 5 hp/100,000 Btu, and 6 hp/125,000 Btu.

To calculate an approximate heater size for an outdoor swimming pool, follow these steps:

  • Determine your desired swimming pool temperature.
  • Determine the average temperature for the coldest month of pool use.
  • Subtract the average temperature for the coldest month from the desired pool temperature. This will give you the temperature rise needed.
  • Calculate the pool surface area in square feet.
  • Use the following formula to determine the Btu/hour output requirement of the heater:
  • Pool Area x Temperature Rise x 12

This formula is based on 1º to 1-1/4ºF temperature rise per hour and a 3-1/2 mile per hour average wind at the pool surface. For a 1-1/2ºF rise multiply by 1.5. For a 2ºF rise multiply by 2.0.
