Chlorine Shortage Felt Across The Country

NEW ORLEANS With summer heat on the horizon, many are already prepping their pools.
While the water might need a shock, customers are in for one as well.
I was caught off guard totally, said Allen Morton.
Morton was stocking up on supplies at Duckys Pools, Hot Tubs and Living in Metairie.
We have to get the pool ready to celebrate Mothers Day, Morton said.
Across the country though, chlorine is scarce.
Josh Ulfers, owner of Duckys said, Chlorine has been flying off the shelves. Weve been preparing for it for a couple of months now knowing that it was going to hit home for people.
The shortage is blamed on a massive fire last August at a chlorine plant outside of Lake Charles. The plant caught fire following Hurricane Laura and now, more than half of the chlorine tablets in the U.S. were destroyed.
Luckily, we bought a lot of our chlorine last year right after the fire before the demand hit nationwide. So, weve been pretty stable on our prices, but prices will climb throughout the year, Ulfers said.
Not only is chlorine a hot commodity, but those looking to dive into a pool or spa might have to wait just longer.
Everything to do with pools is in short supply right now. Were able to bring in a lot more product than a lot of other companies, so were in slightly better shape. Even some of our hot tub vendors are a year plus out right now, Ulfers said.

Duckys Pools Hot Tubs & Living Has Opened
Duckys Pools, Hot Tubs & Living was slated to open on April 1st and while the official grand opening celebration has been temporarily pushed back due to COVID-19 the store is open for business. Duckys is a locally owned retailer offering pool supplies, above ground pools, spas & hot tubs. A large portion of the store also features home decor and gifts. A full selection of grills and accessories including Big Green Egg is expected to arrive in the next week as well.
The management team decided now is a good time to open as pool owners across the New Orleans metro area are opening their pools for the season and need a source for chemicals and supplies. If pools go untreated well have more problems to deal with in the area. Untreated pools can become a public health issue especially when considering mosquitos. Local Pool Business Revenue Takes A Dive Amid Chlorine Tablet Shortage
NEW ORLEANS – A national shortage of chlorine tablets is impacting inventory at local pool stores.
Weve had people driving in from Baton Rouge, from other parts of the state and even Mississippi trying to find chlorine, said Josh Ulfers, owner of Duckys Pools, Hot Tubs and Living in Metairie. He says his inventory of chlorine tablets is dwindling.
The plant that makes a base product for the tablets for national consumption caught on fire and as a result tablets are very hard to find nationwide, he said.
Hes talking about the BioLab chlorine products facility outside of Lake Charles that caught fire during Hurricane Laura last year. It is one of the countrys largest manufacturers of pool cleaning products, supplying nearly 70 percent of the countrys chlorine tablets. And now businesses, like his, are taking a hit.
Thankfully we have some deep vendor networks were able to work with some manufacturers that were able to secure some material for us, said Ulfers. But its just a major shortage right now.
For smaller pool shops, like Billiot Pools and Spas in Gretna, owner Robert Allemore is also feeling the heat.
These are the only ones I have. Fifty pounds of tablets, thats all I have left, said Allemore. Not a lot at all. And theres no more to be had.
Allemore said hes been in business for 30 years and has never seen this problem before.
And as a result, summer revenue at stores– like his– is also suffering because of the shortage.
