How Many Lights Am I Going To Need

How to Convert Old Fiber Optic Pool Lights to NEW, Energy-Efficient LED Lighting

It subject to the type of light, it is suggested that one light, at the minimum, is going to adequately light up a pool up to thirty foot long. Pools longer than thirty feet are going to require two lights. Take heed that this is the smallest amount, most people end up getting two lights installed, and some even require to install three lights on larger pools. As of this post, full sized LED pool lights, like those that are usually installed in vinyl lined or concrete pools, typically cost between $1,000 and $1,500 installed.

  • Smaller LED lights usually cost between $700 and $900 installed.
  • Fiber optic pool lighting is typically around $1,300 to $1,700 installed.
  • Full sized incandescent pool lighting is usually around $450 to $650.

What Should I Know About Pool Lights

Lighting your pool allows you to swim at nighttime with single or multi-colored ambient light. LED pool lighting enables you to change colors with ease, possibly with your smart phone. In-pool lighting is required to be installed during the pools construction. Small LED lights cost around $700$900 installed, and fiber optics cost about $1,300$1,700. The only necessary maintenance is bulb replacement.

Eurus Home Led Pool Lights

Available in 12V and 120V versions for improved compatibility, the Eurus Home LED pool light offers seven different colors of light to illuminate your pools water. You can program the colors by remote, so you wont need to keep flicking the power switch on and off dozens of times like with other models. However, the remote doesnt work if the bulb is in a metal housing or under three feet of water. Youll also need an antenna installed on the light.

Overall, liked the illumination produced by this bulb. Most of the colors were vibrant and bright, but the red was very dim and didnt provide much light at all. The bulb is protected by a one-year warranty in case anything goes wrong. However, that warranty doesnt cover water getting into the housing, which makes it much less worthwhile in our eyes. In the end, we dont think the Eurus Home light is one of the best underwater LED pool lights.

  • Warranty doesnt cover water getting into the housing
  • The red light is very dim
  • Remote only works with antenna installed on light

Cnbrighter Led Underwater Pool Lights

Designed to run on DC 12V-24V circuits only, the CNBRIGHTER LED Underwater Pool Lights are small lights available in warm white, cool white, and blue hues. If you have a standard 120V circuit powering your current pool light, then youll need a transformer to convert to DC if you want to use the CNBRIGHTER lights. They are small and simple, offering just a single color each. You wont get any fancy colors or light shows, just a basic pool light. But because of this, theyre very inexpensive, one of the cheapest underwater LED options weve seen.

One of our concerns was the very short leads on this light. Wed prefer to get more length from them as it would make it much easier to work with. Another issue we had was poor longevity. We purchased several to begin with, but most of them stopped working within the first few months. While theyre not terribly expensive, the cost begins to multiply if you have to continually replace them. In the end, we dont think theyre a great option and wed recommend opting for something like the S.R. Smith pool light in our top position instead.

Replace Fiberstars Fiberoptic Inground Pool Light

lsuxtremist said:After reading this recommendation, others, and looking at this and looking into this option a bit more – is there any way of retrofitting the fiberoptic lights with somethign that does not cost $700+? It looks like this option involves a $200-300 light plus a Power Tower/Transformer for the light to plug into. One option appears to also need the “tower base” , though I am not sure if that is mandatory. My fiberoptic has never worked since we purchased the house and inherited the pool 3 years ago. We don’t really need the pool light that much and with other needs/expenses for the pool, spending $700 is not in the cards this year. I would love to get this fixed though. Maybe just wait until I can do it right with this equipment?

The tower is all you would need. Fibers dont fail, unless they were cracked

Troubleshooting Fiber Optic Pool Lights

In fiber optics, light is transmitted from one end of a thin piece of glass, called a silica, to the other end. Fiber optics are ideal because the light signal is stronger than on a standard metal circuit. That makes these lights ideal for swimming pools. Though a quality light source, fiber optics can still experience problems. If the fixture is cloudy, that means it is likely filled with water and the fiber optic lighting will need replacing. If this isn’t the problem, proceed to the next step. Locate the breaker box for the pool lighting system. This will be outside your home, somewhere in the pool area. Flip the main power supply switch to the “Off” position and open the breaker box panel. Wait for the meter to produce a reading.

Bonbo Ycdbai1250 Led Pool Bulb

The Bonbo LED pool bulb is a basic underwater LED bulb with no extras or fancy light shows. You get white light only, but its bright enough to illuminate an entire pool. On top of this, its also affordably priced. Whether you need a 12V or 120V light, the Bonbo has you covered since its available in either configuration.

While we would have preferred a bit more versatility with some vibrant colors or light shows, thats not our biggest problem with the Bonbo pool bulb. What really bothered us was that it doesnt live up to the advertised lifespan of 30,000+ working hours. Ours never crossed the one-year mark. We had it replaced since it is protected by a one-year warranty. But the same problem occurred again. Within a year, our new bulb was dead. This seems to be a recurring issue, so we cant recommend the Bonbo bulb with such a poor lifespan.

  • White only, no color options
  • Doesnt live up to the advertised lifespan

Compared to LED pool lights, fiber optic pool lights are more costly. As mentioned in our LED pool lighting blog, LED units can range anywhere from $400-$900, whereas fiber optic pool lights can range anywhere from $900-$1,500. This is mainly due to the fan in the fiber optic housing system which cools the lights down. Also, fiber optic systems may have more parts to replace later down the road as well, driving the cost up even more. LED and fiber optic replacement bulbs both can range anywhere from $200-$400, but youll be replacing the fiber optic bulbs more often, costing you more money as well, which brings us to our next point.

  • Bulbs Do Not Last Long
  • Bulbs in fiber optic pool lighting are only supposed to last anywhere from 3 to 7 years. This is nothing compared to LED pool bulbs, which can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years.

  • Lacks Brightness
  • To brighten up your entire pool at night with fiber optic pool lighting, you may need two fiber optic dry boxes because one can only light up so much pool at a time . In order to get the brightness of a LED unit, placing two fiber optic dry boxes may be needed if you are going for the total illumination effect.

Fiber optic pool lights are different than LEDs in that fiber optic pool lighting is more for an ambiance look for certain areas of your pool such as waterfalls and perimeters, not really to illuminate the entire pool.
