Know Your Hot Tub Control Panel

HOT TUB Topside Control Panel Not Working Right ?

The hot tub control panel is a functional display system that operates all your tubs features. It handles everything from the main power, to the spa jets, and even things like the lights and music.

A standalone hot tub has the control panel built into the top of the tub. This is known as a topside control panel.

It consists of a small screen outfitted with LEDs or LCDs, with various buttons and indicators covered in an overlay. The buttons control the functions and the screen communicates to the user what current function is being carried out.

Both digital and analog panels exist, and theyre designed to work only with specific control boards.

If you have a tub that was built from the ground up, the controls will be housed with the rest of the spa equipment. This is known as a spa side control panel.

Many spa side controls will be linked up with a remote, so you can still access the control system while in the tub. In most cases, the remote will be installed at the tub, and hardwired back to the control panel through tubing.

With recent advances in technology, wireless remotes are also available, although they are usually only compatible with certain controllers.

    Balboa Control Panels Features

Hot tub topside control panels are the element that puts the final touch on your spa configuration. This is the “brains” of your hot tub: the part that allows you to fully customize your hot tub. If you’re after luxury, you’ll want the finest levels of fine tuning and scheduling that your carefully-chosen components can possibly provide.

But not everybody needs the same level of control. Some spa users prefer simplicity, such as two three buttons that control only the broadest aspects of heating and cycling water. Other spa owners prefer extremely fine-tuned control with eight buttons and complex scheduling system to match. Balboa Water Group provides options covering this entire range, as well as everything in between. Their Paizo sensor-equipped components reliably facilitate the most pleasant hot tub experiences possible.

With four buttons, heat controls, and compatibility with all Balboa PCBs, this panel covers basic options while allowing for higher levels of control than the most streamlined panels. The heat jacket helps this panel stand up to thousands of hours of harsh temperatures.

What is the expected life of hot tub control panel?

Much depends on the design and sophistication of the panel itself. Simpler panels tend to have a longer life. The more sophisticated panels seem to require replacement more often.

Can I replace the upper control panel myself?

Yes you can! Easy Spa Parts includes our own step-by-step instructions with every panel we sell. We also include the inlay, factory recommended silicone and everything else you need to make the switch. It takes about 45 minutes to do the job and 90% of our customers do their own installation. For more information, check out our control panel installation guide.

What is the warranty on a new upper control panel?

Easy Spa Parts offers a 1-year factory warranty on almost all control panels, including the 01580-0001, 01560-310, 01560-320 & 01560-345 assemblies. The M-Drive, , currently carries a 2-year warranty.

My Dimension One Spas control panel has an error message that says: Flow Error Check Water Lever, Rinse Filters what does that mean?

A flow error indicates the heater does not have enough water flowing through it so the spa water will not heat until the error is cleared. Try the steps in our troubleshooting guide video to start and call us for more help if the problem continues.

Where Is The High Limit Reset Button On My Hot Tub

The high limit reset button is typically located on the control pack under the hot tub. When the front panel is removed, you can find the high limit reset button on the outside of the control pack, which is a small red button that can be pressed.

It looks just like the reset button on a disposal if youve ever pressed one of those.

It is a safety feature of your hot tub. Its designed to protect users of the hot tub and the sensitive parts of the hot tub. How?

It deactivates the heater when the water hits extreme temperatures. This is usually not more than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures above this level become highly dangerous!

The high limit switch is always closed, but when the water reaches such extreme temperatures, it opens to break the circuit. This prevents the heater from experiencing a literal meltdown.

A tripped switch cuts the power before the fuse to stop the heater and the pump. In some older systems, it may also cut power to the heater.

It must be manually reset after conditions return to normal.

The high limit switch senses the water temperature through a capillary tube that is attached to a bulb and is housed in a thermowell. In some models, the high limit switch is a sensor known as a thermodisc.

The switch is sometimes activated when youre refilling the hot tub and has to be reset by pressing the aforementioned red button on your spa pack.

Is It Easy To Replace A Hot Tub Control Panel

The hot tub panel itself can be replaced fairly easily by a homeowner with basic DIY skills. The sticker that goes on the control panel is extremely easy to replace when the buttons get worn.

    But it depends.

If you have average technical or mechanical skills, you will probably find it easy. However, if you do feel confused or challenged when dealing with electrical or mechanical appliances, you would probably find it difficult.

While most control panels are replaced in similar ways, there could be slight differences in how your particular model needs to be addressed.

But here is a basic run-down of the steps involved:

  • Cut power to the hot tub at the disconnect box
  • Remove the front panel of the hot tub
  • Locate the wires coming from the topside control panel
  • Unplug them from the control pack/box
  • Using a flathead screwdriver with a cloth underneath , insert and lift up gently all the way around the edges of the topside control panel
  • Remove and set aside the old panel
  • There will likely be glue or silicone residue which will need to be gently scraped off or cleaned up.
  • Feed the wire from the new topside panel through the opening down to the control box
  • Plug in the new topside panel
  • Turn on the power to the hot tub and verify the new panel is working correctly
  • Run a small bead of clear silicone neatly around the edges of the topside panel. Make sure to use a waterproof silicone
  • Replacing The Same Topside Control Panel

How to Replace a Hot Tub Topside Panel Overlay Sticker

If you are able to locate the same topside panel that you now have on your control panel, replacement is an easy affair. Before installing however, inspect that the shape and size is the same and that the wire connectors are the same.

Look for any visible screws, bracket or lock nut, usually on the backside of the panel. If none are found, the panel may be glued in place with a bead of silicone. Use a flat screwdriver to pry up gently on the edges of the panel. If you feel strong resistance, check again for something securing the panel face or wires to the spa wall.

Once the topside panel is loose from the spa wall, you can just follow the wires and disconnect it from the spa pack control unit. Pay attention to where it connects and in which direction the plug is oriented. Replace a new topside control panel in reverse order, using a bead of silicone if necessary to hold it in place, and also to keep out moisture.

How Do I Know If My Hot Tub Control Panel Is Bad

If your hot tub control board is working fine, but your control panel is frozen or dead, that is a key indicator that the control panel is bad. If this is the case, inspect if the display has moisture.

For example, check if a part of the display is wet and or if there are cracked buttons.

If only a side of the control panel is not working, check for blinking lights or error messages. As a first step, reset your breaker, and if the problem persists, turn off the breaker. Then, disconnect the panel to examine the circuit board.

Turn the power on and see if the heater or the filtration system is working.

Truth be told, topside control panels are not easily testable. The best way to know if the one you have is bad is to plug in another one, to see if it works.

If The Display Shows An Error

If the display shows an error message, you should consult the hot tubs owners manual to cross reference the message youre seeing.

A display error thats blinking or flashing may only need something as simple as a system reset, whereas any kind of truncated display can indicate there is moisture or dirty contacts inside the controller.

Most error messages can be fixed, but you might need to get a new one depending on the age of the controller.

    Hot Tub Topside Panel Installation

Upper control or topside panels often need replacing, fundamentally they are all the same, below we have produced a step by step guide for carrying out the work, please note hot tubs do differ and subtle changes in the configurations may change the work steps shown.

These instructions are for informational purposes only. Poolandspacentre.co.uk does not guarantee that following these instructions will resolve your specific spa condition, nor does pool and spa centre accept liability for work performed by anyone attempting the repair or part replacement.

    1. Turn off power at the RCD before beginning this repair procedure as water and electricity never mix.

    2. Slide a plastic spatula around the perimeter of the panel to break the silicone mounting seal.

    3. If the panel does not lift easily after using the spatula, try lifting in several places with large flathead screwdriver. A towel between the shell and screwdriver will help prevent dents and scratches. Be careful not to scratch the hot tub shell.

    4. Lift the panel from its installation area.

    5. With the power turned off at the RCD, locate and unplug the Upper Control connector from the PC Board. The location of the connector may vary from spa to spa. Note the position for refitting.

    6. Plug in the new topside panel and carefully turn on the power again. The spa should begin its start-up cycle. Check the topside prior to fitment, if all buttons works OK, turn off the power again and unplug the new unit.
