Before installing a hot tub, you should be aware that Cuyahoga County requires licenses for pools or spas serving four families or more. Regulations in Cleveland only require permits for pools holding more than 1,500 gallons of water, so few hot tubs, which hold an average of between 400 and 500 gallons of water, will require a permit.
How difficult it is to install a hot tub may depend on which type you purchase. Models that use 120-volt electricity are considered plug-and-play and are compatible with existing outlets, but 240-volt models require an electrician to run a hard-wired connection. Most hot tubs are filled with a garden hose and do not require any plumbing modifications.
There may also be other requirements from utility companies. First Energy, Clevelands largest electrical provider, does not allow hot tubs to be located within 25 feet of the utilitys overhead conductors or five feet of its underground cabling. Consult your hot tub dealer about any additional requirements.
