We have all our material in place and compacted our next step will be to soak the whole area thoroughly, for hours. Placing sprinklers around the pool and letting them run for 2 or 3 hours usually does the trick. After a super-soaking, let the ground surrounding your pool dry up this usually takes a day or two. You will notice that even though you spent all that time compacting your layers, the area around the pool will have settled a few inches. This is good and exactly what we were hoping for. If desired, after a few days, you can repeat the process, to ensure that the layers are as compact as they can be.

Intro To Hydrostatic Pressure
I’d like to detail what exactly happens when you drain a pool that is partially submerged in ground water. To this end I have whipped together some images to help describe this.Shown in the images is an example of a vinyl lined pool with a hard shell outside and a respectably high ground water level outside the pool. The ground water is just sitting underground saturating the soil but it does in fact have somewhat of a surface to it. As long as the pool water level is equal to or higher than the surface level of the ground water then there is greater pressure from the pool water and thus a net outward force holding the liner against the wall of the pool’s outer shell. As water continues to be drained from the pool the surface level of the pool water drops below that of the ground water and a net inward pressure develops. This net inward pressure is a result of the fact that there is more water pressure on the outside than the inside. If the pool’s shell is porous or unsealed then water seeps through the shell and collects behind the liner. If this happens quickly then the liner will appear to float up off the bottom of the pool as more water collects below it and more water is removed from above it. If the shell is well sealed and non-porous then the seeping will occur slowly allowing the pool to continue emptying and creating a buildup of pressure on the outside eventually collapsing the walls of the pool’s shell or pushing it up out of the ground.

How To Fill Your Swimming Pool With Water
Here are the seven standard steps to fill your swimming pool with water:
Step 1. To fill up the pool in the standard way, you will need to connect a hose to your outdoor spigot. Some homeowners with multiple spigots use additional hoses to speed up the process.
Step 2. Start with the pool .
Step 3. Be careful that you DO NOT create a permanent ring by stopping the water too early. This issue typically arises because people want to leave their homes or go to sleep. If that is the case with you, simply decrease the flow of water while you are away.
Step 4. It is important to understand swimming pool water levels to not stop the water too early. Keep the water running until it is halfway up the pools waterline tile. The surface should be approximately 3 inches below the edge of the pool.
Step 5. Now switch to the spa. You can turn off the water when the spa overflows into your pool.
Step 6. Once the water is in the pool, you can add chemicals and turn on your filtration system.
Step 7. Wait 24 hours after the addition of chemicals. Now the pool is safe for swimming!
Backfill Tamp Backfill Tamp
In this phase of our DIY pool project, we will place our fill material into the trench around the pool, in phases all the way up to the top of the wall. First, push in about 1 ft of your material all around the pool. Then compact this initial layer, using either a gas-powered compactor or a heavy hand tamper. Youll find both to be a lot of work, but the gas-powered tamper will complete the job more quickly.
Go all the way around the pool all the material we just put in must be compacted fully. After the first layer is done, push in your next layer of material and compact it in the same manner as the first. Continue in this manner, one foot at a time, until you come within a foot of the top of your pool wall.

How To Determine The Cost Of A Partial Fill
Using a tape measure, measure the distance between the surface of your water and the top of the pool. If your pool is covered, take this measurement before you remove it. The tape measure end can be placed on the cover and then figure out how far it is from the top of the pool.
For example, if the distance from the cover to where you want to fill your water is 1.5 feet, put that number into the formula.

Choosing A Replacement Liner
One of the fun parts of putting in a new pool liner is choosing a new pattern or style. Darker colors will absorb slightly more solar energy. Tan and Grey tones have become popular lately, to blend with neutral backyard colors. Most patterns have a mottled pattern, to help hide dirt and mask wrinkles or imperfections. If you can afford it, I would always recommend choosing a thicker liner 28 or 30 mil, rather than a standard 20 mil pool liner.
Warranty is another way that liner manufacturers differentiate their products, but keep in mind that a true warranty claim, for defects in materials or manufacture, is rare. 99% of liner failures are caused by pool chemistry or Acts of God. Also, most warranties are pro-rated, so a 25 year warranty may have little value over time. Liner warranties typically cover seam or bead separation, but wont cover punctures, or sun or chemical deterioration. Specifically, inground liner warranties only cover you for defects in materials or workmanship.
When you order a pool liner, you may also consider ordering wall foam and adhesive. If your steel walls are rusty, or to just add a soft feel to your walls, 1/8 thick wall foam is added to the walls before you install the new liner. You could use a shovels and several workers, but its probably easier, faster and cheaper to bring in a Skid Steer loader, Bucket loader or a Track Hoe for this part of your DIY inground pool project.
