After youve tested your water, balanced its chemistry, installed your saltwater chlorinator, and connected it to your pool pump, you can begin adding salt. You should look for granulated, non-iodized salt with 99.8% NaCl or higher.

However, I dont recommend this, because you will likely end up with an overcooked exterior by the time the inside is cooked through. Instead, for best results, thaw the chicken breasts in cold water before baking, or in the refrigerator overnight.
Whats The Right Level Of Salt For Your Pool
The optimal range for salt in your pool is 2,700-3,400 ppm , with 3,200 ppm being ideal.
Whats parts per million mean? Its just a scientific unit of measurement, but dont worry, you dont need to know the ins and outs of ppm. The only thing you need to do is test your pool water to get a reading of the current salt ppm levels.

How Many Gallons Is My Pool

How Much Salt Do You Add
The ideal salt level is between 2700-3400 ppm with 3200 ppm being optimal. Before adding salt to your pool, test the water to check your salt level.
If the level is low, determine the number of gallons in the pool and add salt according to the chart below. A low salt level will reduce the efficiency of your salt chlorinator and result in low chlorine production. A high salt level can cause your chlorinator to shutdown and may begin to give your water a salty taste. Generally, salt will begin to be tasted at a level of about 3500-4000 ppm. The salt in your pool/spa is constantly recycled and the loss of salt throughout the swimming season should be minimal. Water loss is due primarily to the addition of water because of splash out, backwashing and/ or overflowing because of rain. Salt does not wear out or evaporate.

Min And Max Flow Rate Range
Almost there! Now that we have the minimum and maximum flow rates for your pool setup, put them together to get to your flow rate range: one of the two main specs for determining the pool pump size you need.
So, lets say you have a 15,000 gallon inground pool. With two turnovers per day, your minimum flow rate comes to 20.8 GPM.
Lets also say that you have a 2.3 square foot sand filter and 1.5 plumbing . You have to take the lower of those two values to make sure you dont overwork any components of your pool, so your maximum flow rate comes to 43 GPM.
In this example, our flow rate range comes out to 20.8-43 GPM.

What Is A Salt Chlorine Generator And How Does It Work
What many people dont realize about salt water pools is that they arent completely chlorine-free. Granted, a salt pool contains much less chlorine than a regular pool but you cant go totally sans chlorine. Thats where a saltwater chlorinator comes in.
A saltwater chlorine generator is a machine that uses electrolysis to convert salt water into chlorinated water. This keeps your salt water pool at the right chlorine level, so it stays sanitary.
So how does a salt chlorine generator work? Basically, it takes NaCl and turns it into HClO . When your generator is running, the salt dissolved in your pool water passes through the chlorine generator cell and over metal-coated charged plates. This initiates electrolysis for chlorine generation.
The control board of your generator is just what it sounds like. It controls how much electricity runs through the system, and thus how much chlorine is produced. Its also where you turn the entire unit on and off.
This chlorine production process is necessary for keeping salt water pools clean, free of chloramines and bacteria, and healthy for swimming. Additionally, a salt chlorine generator will ensure that your pools salinity isnt too high.

What Should The Salt Level Be In A Salt Water Pool
For proper chlorine production in a salt water pool, it is extremely important that the salt parts per million to be kept as close to the system recommendations as possible. So you no longer need to worry “how many gallons is my pool?”, simply apply one of the formulas:
volume = length * width * / 2
The first two agents is, of course, the formula for the area of the rectangle.
volume = * / 2
The first part of the equation comes from a standard area of an ellipsis formula: A = * a * b, where a, b are the distances between the center and the ellipse’s vertex, lying on the horizontal and vertical axes. In our case, we have the length and width values that are the doubled distances a and b, so in the final formula, we need to divide the surface area of an oval by 4.

The area of such a rectangle is then length * / 2. Multiply it by the third dimension – the width – and you’ll get the final formula for rectangular pool volume:

Using A Swimming Pool Salt Chart
Once you calculate how many gallons of water is in your pool and determine your current salt levels, you can finally figure how much salt to add.
Below is the swimming pool salt chart. On the left-hand side, are the current salt levels while the pool sizes are along the top. You can determine how much salt to add by taking your fingers, one for current salt level and one for pool size, and moving it across the table until they touch or intersect.
Example: Based on this salt chart, if your pool has 18,000 gallons and the current salt level is 1600 ppm, you need to add 240 ppm of salt to reach 3200 ppm.

How Do I Know If My Salt Chlorine Generator Is Working
Not sure whether your saltwater chlorinator is working properly? When your system is operating, the control panel should indicate this, either with a production light or another on signal. Also, the production light will tell you that the cell is clean and functional. In other words, if youre unable to turn it on, you might need to clean or replace the salt cell.

Length x width x depth x 7.5 = volume
Length times width gives the surface area of the pool. Multiplying that by the depth gives the volume in cubic feet. Since there are 7.5 gallons in each cubic foot, multiply the cubic feet of the pool by 7.5 to arrive at the volume of the pool, expressed in gallons.

How To Calculate The Amount Of Salt Needed
You first need to obtain the volume of your swimming pool before calculating the amount of salt you need to add to it. Most pools will be either rectangular, circular or square and with one shallow end and a deep end as well. If the pool is a single depth, youd simply calculate the volume with the formulae for each shape. The formulae are as follows:
- Circular pool: V= 3.142 x r2 x h
- Rectangular pool: V= L xW x H
- Square pool: V= L3
For pools with shallow and deep ends, you need a specific pool volume calculator such as this one. This formula entails entering the shape, length, width, radius, shallow and deep end heights and then clicking CALCULATE to get the desired volume. For the amount of salt needed, you need a pool salinity calculator which uses the pool volume in gallons, the current salt amount in ppm, and the desired salt in ppm.
