Once you know what kind of sand you want to use and how much of it you need, you can begin laying it down for your pool base. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • You can dampen the sand to make it a little easier to lay.
  • Keep the sand inside the pool track, rather than underneath it.
  • Use the back of a rake or a push broom to spread and smooth the sand.
  • Compact the sand with a soil tamper or another tool for compacting soil.

Foam Cove Or Not With A Sand Base

I am about to start prepping my yard for installation of a 24′ round pool. What are your recommendations for the cove? Just use sand or would the foam coves be a better option?

Hi Chad

It all depends on whether or not it is within your budget. The foam cove does serve a purpose, but is not really necessary. With just a sand cove you should have some type of berm around the outside of the pool. Something to ensure the pool cove stays in place. With the foam this is not needed.

How Does Sand Filter Work

Typically, the pool pump pushes water inside the filter tank. The water passes through the tiny sand particles. During the process, the sand filters out the debris in the water up to 20 microns. The water is then returned to the pool while clean. Its that simple.

After some days, the sand in the tank will require backwashing to remove any sand which might have been pushed into the pipes and clean the sand itself.

Sand filters are quite famous and favorite to many since they are affordable, easy to maintain, and durable.

As you might have noticed, choosing the right size sand filter isnt an entirely straightforward task. There are two or three things that will help you determine the size of your above-ground pool sand filter. One is the size of your pool pump, and the next is the capacity of your swimming pool.

Why does the size make a difference? With the wrong sizing, you can end up buying a too big or too small sand filter. A too big sand filter can be an expensive mistake or even worst, over-power your pools filtration system.

A too-small model might, on the other hand, lack the power for optimal filtration. That means a small sand filter wont get the filtration job done. It wont have the ability to handle the amount of unwanted debris and contaminants present in your large pool. With such a sand filter, you will need to backwash it frequently.

How To Clean A Pool Filter Cartridge

  • Turn off the pool pump. First, turn off the pool pump. This prevents water from entering the filter tank during maintenance.
  • Remove the filter. Open the cartridge filter reservoir and remove the filter. Inspect for damage. If it is damaged, it must be replaced.
  • Pour water over the cartridge. While the cartridge is naturally resistant to the flow of water, be careful not to damage it while cleaning.
  • Check the cartridge. It is not reasonable to expect a cartridge to look like new even after several weeks of use.
  • Put it back together. Once the cartridge is clean, you can place it back in the filter tank.
  • Turn it on. After resetting the cartridge, checking the O-ring and closing the canister, you can turn the pool pump back on and get your system up and running.

Choosing An Area For Your Above

Before you start to level out the ground for your new above-ground swimming pool, you will first need to decide where you would like to situate the pool.

Here are some important factors you might want to consider when choosing the perfect location:

– An area that is already somewhat flat will reduce the amount of labour required.- Consider a semi-shaded area so you can enjoy the suns rays while also having the option to be protected from them if needed.- Avoid areas that are directly under trees. They are abundant in organic debris which will increase the general maintenance of the swimming pool.- Steer clear of septic or sewage lines, underground cables and power lines.- Allow four feet of space to surround the pool. – Do not place the swimming pool on a deck, balcony or platform. The structures could collapse under the weight of a filled pool.- Ensure the pool is not set up on mud, loose sand or loose soil. The ground should be firm and compact.

Its also worth noting that wherever the pool is located, the chemicals in the pool’s water, such as chlorine, will damage the nearby grass. It is inevitable that water will be splashed, which will spray the chemicals and can negatively impact the surrounding plants.

Masonry Sand Volume Chart For Above Ground Pool Installations

Try to order by the yard if possible. Volume is more accurate than weight. Sand could have a high content of moisture and therefore weigh more. Always round up the next higher amount if they will not deliver 1/2 yards. There will generally be sand left over after the installation.

NOTE – VERY IMPORTANT: Always insist on masonry sand! Sand must not contain any rocks, stones, pebbles, twigs, trash, grass, etc. It must be pure, fine masonry sand.

Type and VolumeAn average 18-foot round aboveground swimming pool requires about 3 tons or 2.5 cubic yards of sand to provide a 2-inch base. The cost for a cubic yard of masonry sand varies, but $48 is about average.

Secondly, do I have to put sand under my pool? Mostly it is to provide a smooth level base under the liner of an above ground pool. While it works, it is not the best option. What To Put Under An Above Ground Pool

The traditional method is using 6×6 square pavers to level your pool, then to spread out a sand pad over your pool site. The standard depth of sand that should be used under an above ground pool’s floor is 2 inches. It’s more important for the pool’s bottom to be smooth instead of perfectly level. There are many other options to put under an above ground pool that sits on grass, such as a commericial pad, concrete pad, or solid foam.

Build Stone Dust Base

Once you have a clean surface that is mostly level, you can start to bring in stone dust.

Lay down at least 2 inches of the stone around where the pool wall will sit. Be sure to read the specification of your pool make and model, since every manufacturer has slight differences.

Pro Tip: If you wanted to build up your pool, you can increase the thinkness of the stone dust in the lower areas. But don’t go over 8 inches.

The Circle should be at least 1 foot wide, with the exact circomference of the pool being in the center.

Your first round of leveling should be within 1/4 inch . We have this tool we use on the crew at Campbell Pools which allows us to set it down on the base and with the transit, we look at the measurements on the tool. You can do the same with a ruler, but it will be pretty low.

Using a rake, make sure your level everything around the base, ensuring that the area where the wall will sit is the most accurate.

When you are within 1/4 inch all around, bring in the compacter. Do use a garden hose to lightly spray the stone dust to prevent dust and to improve the effects of compacting.

But it doesn’t stop there, that was round one.

Now that everything is compacted, you need to measure again. Go around the pool and this time, bring everything within 1/8 inch . and you measure absolutely every area where the wall will sit. This will ensure your pool will be level and stable.
