How To Replace An Inground Pool Liner

The liner is the part of your vinyl pool that you see and feel. It is stretched over the walls of your pool, giving it a watertight finished surface. Vinyls come in a range of thicknesses, as well as embossed and non-embossed. Vinyl liners are measured in mils, with 1 mil being 1/1,000th of an inch. The most common measurements are 20, 25, 27, 28, and 30 mils. The thicker the liner, the more expensive the cost and the more difficult the installation. The thickness does not necessarily translate into a longer time before you need to replace the liner. However, thicker liners resist tears and punctures better than thinner ones, which means it will require fewer repairs over its lifetime.

Embossed liners tend to be thinner overall than non-embossed liners. This is because embossed liners have thicknesses that vary over their surface, with the raised sections being thicker than the flat sections. The liner will be labeled as the thickest mils and not the thinnest. This means that an embossed liner that measures 27 mils and a non-embossed liner measuring 27 mils will not be the same thickness or offer the same protection against rips or punctures.

According to River Pools and Spas, a do-it-yourself inground pool project could save you $6,000 to $10,000 on an inground fiberglass pool project that would have cost $40,000 to $55,000 with a professional pool company.

Hiring someone to dig the pool hole for you costs between $400 and $1,500 in an area with optimal soil conditions or as much as $15,000 in hard to get to areas with rocky terrain. Additional expenses you might incur might include the following:

How Long Do Pool Liners Normally Last

Inground pool liners typically last between 10-15 years before they need to be replaced. There are several factors that can increase or decrease that lifespan, however. These include:

  • Water Balance. Pool water that isnt properly balanced can greatly reduce the life of a pool liner. Over time, poorly balanced water can stretch the liner, cause wrinkles to form and can turn the liner hard and brittle.
  • The Fit Of The Liner. If a liner wasnt made specifically to fit the pool it will not last as long. Improperly sized liners need to be stretched into place. This means that a liner that was once 30mil thick might be as thin as 15-20mil once installed. This leads to weak points in the liner and a reduced lifespan.
  • Ground Water Problems. In areas with high groundwater levels, water can seep in under the liner, causing it to float. While the liner will settle back down when the groundwater recedes, it never goes perfectly back in to place. This leads to stretching, wrinkling, or the liner coming completely out of the coping.

How Long Does A Pool Liner Last

On average, an inground pool liner will last 5 to 9 years, while an above-ground pool liner lasts 6 to 10 years. A typical 25-year liner warranty may only consist of 2 to 5 years of full protection before it’s proratedmeaning it loses value drastically every year.

An exact measurement of time is difficult to determine, but anything over ten years is impressive. With the right chemical balancing in your pool water, you can get more life out of your linernot maintaining chemical and pH levels in your pool water can destroy a vinyl liner.

    • Keep your pool covered whenever its not in use.
    • Dont let pets with claws swim in the pool.
    • Fix tears as soon as they occur.

    Thickness Of The Vinyl Liner

Its vital to know that vinyl liner pools come in a variety of thicknesses, ranging from 20 to 30 mils. As a general rule of thumb, thinner liners are cheaper. Their installation is quick, and theyre easy to work with. On the other hand, thicker lines are more expensive, and they are much more finicky to install.

We recommend going with the thickest option you can afford despite the additional costs and extra time of installing thicker liners. Thicker liners provide more robust protection against tears or punctures. You never know when some debris might fall in your fall and create a hole. The more you safeguard your pool against mishaps, the less youll have to pay down the road.

How Do I Choose The Color Of My Pool Liner

In a deep pool the water is more blue and you see more of the water and less of the finish. Sunlight and shade play a role in the color of the water. If the pool is in direct sunlight it will have a lighter water color and shade will deepen the color. It is important to consider these factors when choosing your liner.

    How About Fading Or Bleaching

Vinyl Pool Liner Replacement: Cost, Steps, Tips

Fading at the waterline will happen with time, especially for vinyl pools in the hot Southern sun. For pools in the mid-section or northern parts, its not such an issue, especially for pools that are covered and winterized for half the year or more. Although the vinyl has UV inhibitors, direct sun can be hard on liners, especially those with a printed border. A stick-on 6-inch tall border, called BorderLines, can be applied at the water line to brighten up the pool again.

Bleaching of a liner is a type of chemical fading that usually is caused by repeatedly pouring shock directly into the pool , or throwing tablets into the pool. Chlorine tabs will stain any pool surface type and are best used in a chlorinator. Liners are more resistant to this type of fading than they used to be, but its best to be careful not to allow chlorine to directly lie on a vinyl pool floor.

    Cut Out The Old Liner:

Cut the liner with a razor knife at the base of the wall all the way around the pool, and under the pool step. Then cut vertically from the floor, up thru the top bead in several spots around the pool. Carefully pull the liner from the track by lifting up and outwards, the plastic track may be brittle and can crack if stressed. Roll-up the wall sections, and remove from the pool. Leave the floor section of vinyl liner in place for now, keeping it in the pool until you are ready to work on the floor.

Carefully remove, with a large #3 Philips screwdriver, the faceplates for the skimmer, wall return, main drains, pool lights, and pool step sections. You can use a cordless drill as well, but be sure to use a large #3 Phillips bit.

Safely store your screws, so not even one gets lost, we usually use Zip bags for the screws. The screws will not need replacement if they are not damaged. It is however recommended to replace the faceplates and gaskets, except for the step gasket, which is a very thick and durable rubber seal.

Order the correct gaskets , for your skimmer, main drain, pool light and wall returns. There are two gaskets used, one behind the liner, and one on top of the liner.

New faceplates for the skimmer, drain and returns are also recommended, as older plastic faceplates will warp and crack, which makes a poor seal that can seep and weep water.

The average cost of an inground saltwater pool is $35,000 for the pool and another $1,100 to $2,200 for the salt water generator, bringing the total cost to around $36,100 to $37,200. Saltwater pools do not need any chemicals added, are easier to maintain, and don’t have a chlorine smell.

For homeowners who would prefer not to use traditional chemicals in their pool, a saltwater swimming pool uses a system that converts the salt in the water to chlorine, but the levels are much lower than in a chlorine pool, so it is kinder to clothes and your skin.

Estimating Long-Term Salt Water Pool Costs

    • Replacing the cell in the generator every 36 years at the cost of $800 .
    • Adding salt to run your saltwater pool An average pool measuring 14 by 28 with a depth of 6.5 feet has a water volume of just under 20,000 gallons, and for that much water, you will need around 11 x 40-pound bags of salt, which should total just under $100.

    Vinyl Pool Seats Cost

Not every pool includes seats. Some people use their stairs when they want a place to temporarily rest in the pool. However, it is possible to add seating inside the pool. Like with stairs, there are different ways to do this.

You can add a simple white plastic bench seat to the interior walls, which is the least expensive option. The white stands out against the pool walls, however, so it is the most obvious.

You can choose to have your liner go over a bench or ledge in the pool wall. In this case, the bench or ledge is built into the wall. The is stretched and fitted over it. This creates a more seamless appearance for the pool, resulting in a more subtle look. Like the rest of your pool, this means that the liner is at risk of puncture or ripping in these areas, while a white plastic bench will be more durable long term.

    Additional Costs To Consider

Another important consideration is your home’s location. Installers tend to earn more in locales with high property values, such as coastal cities. The total expense might also vary depending on the travel distance from their office to your house. Local tax, fuel, material and insurance costs also have an impact on pool liner installation.

It could be from a bad measurement, but usually its just a matter of taking your time when you are installing the liner to make sure that it is hanging centered over the pool. Its easy to have the liner slightly askew, or not lined up to the corners and floor angles exactly. Once its lined up correctly, the shallow floor may need to be pulled up toward the shallow end wall. Remaining wrinkles can be pushed to the sides and corners as the installation progresses.
