Decide On Pool Size And Shape
The size and shape of a pool will determine its cost. Typically a bigger and taller pool will run more expensive than smaller ones, but be sure to do some research to find the right kit for you. Pools are either round or rectangular in shape. Round pools can range from 12 to 30 feet. Rectangular pools can have dimensions of 12-by-24 feet, 15-by-30 feet or 18-by-33 feet. The height of pools can range from 48 inches to 54 inches. Pool kits can range from $720 to $8,240, depending on the size.
NOTE: Youll want to calculate how much it will cost to fill a pool at this time, too. There are several pool capacity calculators online. Pools typically need 15,000 to 30,000 gallons of water. For comparison, the average family of four uses around 10,500 gallons in a 30-day period, according to the EPA. So expect your water bill to double in the month you fill it for the first time. Once filled, it can cost between $40 and $60 per month to keep it filled. You can hire a water truck to fill your pool, but that will typically cost between $600 and $1,200.
What Is The Installation Process For Above Ground Pools
Compared to an in-ground pool, an above ground pool has a simple installation process. In fact, with a professional crew, installation may take only a few hours. Expect the process to take longer if you choose to install the pool yourself. Pool installations require these steps:
- Find a flat piece of land or excavate land to create a flat surface.
- Prepare a sand foundation for the pool.
- Lay the bottom track of the pool.
- Set up the pools side walls.
- Install the pool liner and secure to the top track.
- Attach pool posts to the pool walls, and top with caps.
- Vacuum between walls and liner to remove air.
- Fill the pool with water.
- Install pool equipment including the skimmer, pump, and filter.
- Level and compact soil around the pool.
To keep your above ground pool stable, make sure to keep your water level full and the soil around your pool well-packed. In addition, dont walk on the bottom of your pool until the sand has firmed.
Either Purchase A New Liner Or Have Where To Buy One Available
As mentioned earlier, a new liner will be needed when re-installing an above-ground pool .
To make things easier for the buyer, either already have the new liner with the used pool or have a link or store information on where to buy one. This can make the used product that they are buying feel like a more complete purchase.
Selling something used and then saying Oh by the way, youll have to buy something for this before you can assemble it can give the potential purchaser caution. Already having the new liner situation worked out will make the purchased product more complete.

So What Kind Of Pool Should I Get
Any pool installed by a certified professional who knows how to prepare the site, safely run electricity, and maintain safe water chemistry is fine. That, of course, means doing less yourself and spending more money. The effort needed to safely install a pool outweighs the cost savings, and the fact that they just arent all that safe should make passing on cheap pools sold online an easy choice.
Osinski says to expect to spend about $2,500 to $7,500 to purchase a low-end on-ground pool made by a company that specializes in pools. Larger rectangular models can be had for about $10,000. Either way, professional installation should cost $1,000 to $3,000.
Those are way more than the pools available on Amazon, but way less than any sort of in-ground pool installation. The cheapest vinyl options there will run you $25,000 to $35,000 fiberglass options, $45,000 to $80,000 and concrete or tiled options from the mid-$50,000 range to $100,000 .
Osinski says the only pools you should buy online are kiddie pools: very shallow, narrow, often inflatable options that will only really be entertaining to younger kids. Their small size means theyre easy to dump after each use, a step thats absolutely necessary, as is keeping them clean.
And remember to heed Griffithss advice: Active vigilant supervision of children without distractions is required.
Buying Process & Reputable Retailers
Once youve made the decision to purchase an above ground pool, the process becomes fairly easy even something that can be accomplished without ever visiting the store if you prefer.
Your sales associate, whether in person, via email, or via phone, will walk through any last questions you may have and then will simply get the information from you regarding the pool model and size you would like and any accessories or upgrades you would like to add on with the initial purchase.
They will get information from you concerning your location and site for installation so they can add in installation costs and estimated excavation costs , assuming you choose to have the pool installed by one of their installation crews.
From this point, the next person you will most likely hear from is the individual responsible for scheduling the pool installation they will either be calling to set up an installation date/time or to confirm the installation time if one was set at the time of your pool purchase.
Now you are in the hands of the installation crew. While that crew is on site doing the installation, they will walk through the pool and the steps you need to complete once the pool is full, and you can ask any questions that you may have.

Know When To Hire A Professional
A lot of these are sold as kits and are marketed as DIY-friendly, DiClerico says. And they are, but I put the level of difficulty as moderate to high. In other words, if you are an experienced DIY-er, you can probably erect your pool in a weekend . For everyone else, he recommends hiring an installation professional. Bari notes that the upside to buying a pool in-person from a local store is that they often offer packages that include installation and service to guide you through the permit process.

Blue Wave Riviera Above Ground Pool Package
Probably the first thing that will catch your attention about this pool is its design. Unlike many other above ground pools, this one sports a very sophisticated and classy design.
In fact, we can even say that it looks like an above ground pool from another time. However, its not just the aesthetics that make it appealing. It also has very impressive durability because of its UV inhibitors making it resistant to very harsh sunlight.
It is also rust proof and corrosion proof. Its pretty much like having beauty and reliability all rolled into one with this above ground pool package.
Semi Buried Or Fully Buried Above Ground Pool
These pools are similar to the traditional above ground pools discussed above, however, they willhave fully insulated wall panels that are significantly stronger to combat the ground forces pushingin on the walls. These pools will come in a variety of sizes, even the more free form look.
Pros: More of the inground look and feel with a relatively quick install about 3-5 days depending on size and site location, long term solution, warranty.
Cons: Cannot be easily re-located if you move, price point for this option is fairly high due to installation, not conducive to a DIY install.

Find Out If Its Legal
Its always a good idea to check local zoning laws or, if applicable, ask your homeowners association. For example, some neighborhoods have pools, but the HOA doesnt allow people to place one on their property.
Also, make sure to have the city come out and mark where the power lines in your yard are, so the installation crew doesnt hit them if they do any digging.
Our Guide To The Average Cost Of Upkeeping An Above Ground Pool
Before we discuss how much the maintenance of an above-ground pool will cost you, lets talk about the cost of the pool itself.
Luckily, an above-ground pool can range from $200 to $2,000. Wondering why theres such a huge price difference?
Well, it all depends on several factors that have an impact on the price. These common above ground swimming pool factors include:
- The size of the pool
- Construction materials
- Pool type
For instance, inflatable pools are the most affordable type of above ground pools because they dont include expensive structures.
On the other hand, some pools have steel and aluminum construction because theyre meant to be permanent. Naturally, these pools tend to be the most expensive and often the longest-lasting, of all of the above-ground swimming pool types.
Now, what about the maintenance cost of an above-ground pool?

Theyre Not Easy To Maintain
Pools need to be drained regularly, and smaller pools that get heavy use need to be drained more often than most. Regularly cleaning is also a must. Alternately, they sit full of dirty water or exposed to the elements, a recipe for waterborne disease the next time theyre used.
Responsible pool owners also have to make sure their pools are visibly clean free of debris and scum and invisibly clean with correct chemical levels throughout. Managing water chemistry is tricky and it requires either hiring a professional or learning more than you probably want to about the science and best practices. Either way, its an investment that eats into the supposed advantage of ordering a pool online in the first place.
Resin Above Ground Pool
Resin does not rust, corrode, or get as hot as other pool materials. It is both lighter and more rigid than steel. This makes resin pools a durable, lower maintenance option.
The flexibility of injection molded resin means that you can achieve curves, arching, and other details on your pool that might not be possible with other materials. Resin also reduces assembly time due to its sturdy snap-on process that minimizes hardware use. Most resin pools have steel walls for added strength. Resin pools are the most expensive above ground pool option.

Determine A Realistic Price
Everybody is different. Some think what they have is worth a lot more than it is. Others will sell stuff way too cheap and then regret it later when they find out that they couldve gotten a lot more.
As a general rule, a used above-ground pool is worth less than most think. Many will try to sell their used pool for way more than anyone would be willing to pay.

Other Things To Consider When Buying:
- Maintaining social codes Before installing your above ground pool, it is good to make sure there are no underground systems or power lines below it. There are also water usage codes and electric pump requirements to abide by. Check with your local ordinances to be aware of any laws you need to consider.
- Environment Your yard may simply not be suitable for a pool. Sometimes yards with a lot of trees or rocks will require excessive cleaning that will increase the cost drastically. Also, some counties frown upon the removal of trees, even if it is in your own yard.
- Electricity Having external power is an absolute must for your pool. You will use it to run the filtration pump, lighting, vacuum, and much more. It is vital to have an external power line dedicated exclusively for your pool needs. eTake a look at some of the most cost-effective above ground vacuum cleaners on the market in our review!
- Safety If you have children or pets, it is essential to consider the safety of the pool before you even consider purchasing it. Think about what will be necessary to protect your loved ones. Fences, alarms, lockable stairs and ladders, and covers are all options.

How Deep Are Above Ground Pools
Above ground pools also come in several different depths, from 48 tall to 54 tall. To get the best swimming experience, we recommend buying a pool with a depth between 52 and 54. If youre looking to get some extra water depth, ask your pool retailer to dish the bottom of the pool during install. They will then dig out the middle of the pool another few inches, giving you a deep end in the middle of the pool and a shallow end around the edge.

Tips On Decking Around The Pool:
THIS IS ONLY FOR REFERENCE NOT INSTRUCTIONS.
Figuring out how to deck all the way around the pool was tricky. We couldnt find info anywhere on how to do it, so we kind of had to figure it out on our own.
We did learn how to get boards up under the lip of the pool, by framing it in and then using a jigsaw to cut out exactly what we needed to get the decking boards under the top plate of the pool.
We also had to figure out how to frame around the pump. We built removable pieces to get to the mechanics of the pump, and theres a gate in the side of the pickets around the pool so we have access to it.
I think thats about all the tips I have. But if you have more questions, wed be glad to answer them in the comments below
