What Happened To My Pool Anyway

How To Easily Clear Up Algae Green Above Ground Swimming Pool Water

The reason why your pool turned green is related to algae and the chemistry involved with your pools water. When a swimming pool is clear, it is primarily free from organisms that might live in the water.

But when you dont treat it with chlorine or you dont filter the water, it becomes closer to a pond available for life to grow within. So think of the pool as something available for your use or care as part of your home or something else, many things, will make it their home.

Proper Inflatable Swimming Pool Cleaning Techniques

Attach the soft bristle brush to a telescoping pole, so you can reach the floor of the pool. The brush helps to reduce the slimy film on the inside surface areas. Use a pool vacuum to remove smaller particles from the pools water. Scrubbing down the outside walls of inflatable pools improves their general appearance.

Performing pH tests on the pool water gives you a better idea of the chemical levels present in the pool. This allows you to add the right amount of chlorine, shock or other pool chemicals you need to balance out the pH levels of the water. When mixing the chemicals, make sure you know the proper ratios of chemicals to water for your specific size pool.

Cleaning your inflatable swimming pool for winter storage differs from cleaning during use. When storing your pool, scrub the interior walls and floor using the soft-bristled brush. Unplug the filter and pool pump to let the water drain completely. A wet/dry vacuum removes any remaining water. Spray the interior surface of the pool with a nontoxic cleaning solution such as a foam disinfectant cleaner or a mixture of dish soap and water. Use a soft sponge to wipe away the cleaning solution. Spray the pool down with a garden hose or power washer with a low power setting. Completely dry the pool to prevent mold and mildew build-up during storage. Remove the filter and discard if it’s replaceable or clean it thoroughly according to the instructions.

What Happens If Your Swimming Pool Water Level Is Too High

If your pool level is too high, your skimmer wont work as efficiently. While this isnt a very serious problem — especially compared to what can happen if your pool water is too low — it can create more maintenance work for you .

In most cases, pool owners dont need to do much if the water is a little on the high side. In addition to natural evaporation, activities like vacuuming and backwashing can help lower the water level.

Stormy weather ahead? Here’s how to prepare.

Preparing for a torrential downpour or hurricane? Dont drain the pool. Pools were designed to hold water, and you want your pool to be structurally sound during the storm. You can always siphon water out if necessary. Instead of focusing on the water level, focus on making the area around your pool as safe as possible: Move heavy objects indoors disconnect electrical equipment, and give your pool a shock treatment to safeguard the water against contamination.

Remove Foreign Particles Scrub And Vacuum The Pool

The environment and weather may also be the cause of cloudy water. To fix and prevent cloudy water, follow all of the best practices below.

  • Foreign particles, small and large, may find their way into the water, especially during spring. Body oil and sunscreen from swimmers also washes off in the water and accumulates in the pool, causing cloudiness. You can use nets to remove visible particles, and you may have to use pool clarifier to clear up the water when cloudiness persists. Also, I prefer using pool flocculant and vacuuming the pool to do away with fine particles that cannot be removed by leaf net or clarifier.
  • Algae also causes cloudiness in its early growth stages. To remove algae, scrub and clean the pool using a large leaf net and vacuum: Then do a pool shock to get rid of any remaining algae. Control the amounts of pH, chlorine, TA, phosphate, and other pool sanitizers to prevent algae growth.
  • Free chlorine depletes more quickly in full sunlight, but if trees and buildings are next to your pool, direct sun will be blocked. If your pool is in direct sunlight, consider using a chlorine stabilizer and a pool cover when not using the pool.
  • Rain also contributes to cloudy water because it dilutes and therefore reduces free chlorine levels. All you have to do is test the chemicals, paying close attention to the chlorine levels, and adjust them as appropriate.

  • Chlorine comes stabilized or unstabilized. Stabilized chlorine is coated with Cyanuric acid to prevent Cl2 from evaporating. Unstabilized chlorine, such as sodium hypochlorite, is not treated with Cyanuric acid.
  • Sodium hypochlorite, also known as pool bleach, is available as a liquid and is highly concentrated compared to household bleach. Calcium hypochlorite is available as a granular powder or slow-release tablets. Both of these chemicals are used to shock the pool in order to raise the concentration of free chlorine in the water.
  • Calcium hypochlorite reacts vigorously with water to release free chlorine but it dissolves slowly. To get the most free chlorine into the water, add it to your pool at night so it wont evaporate as quickly. Youll need to wait 8 hours to use the pool, anyway. The calcium acts as an alkaline buffer.

When in doubt, consult the instructions that came with your pool, or schedule an appointment with a professional to resolve any questions and ensure that your pool provides a clean, safe and relaxing environment for you and your family.

Why Is The Pool Cloudy After A Rain

Rain water brings dirt, mud, dust, and other contaminants that contain phosphate, which breeds algae. With the presence of phosphate, the water will start to become cloudy even before the algae begins to grow. If you know a storm or shower is about to come, make sure there is ample chlorine to counter the dilution that rain water will bring, and have the filter running during the rain.

No one wants to swim in a pool with dirty, cloudy water, so pool cleaning and maintenance skills are crucial for any pool owner. In an above ground pool, filtering and skimming the pool regularly is key to maintaining clean water — but so are brushing the walls and vacuuming the floors. Most importantly, though, you must maintain proper chemical levels in the pool so the sanitizers work effectively. However, with an above ground pool, you must be sure to use cleaning equipment that is suited for the pool’s materials so you don’t any damage during the process.

Sure, balancing your chemicals before closing will sure help the water from becoming an actual swamp. But this isnt any regular weekly maintenance, at least not for now. There are also some chemicals that could give your pool an extra boost. For example, pool enzymes can be added to your water to help attack any organic contaminants that might still be in your water. And if you live in a place that gets cold enough for your pipes to freeze, use a pool-grade antifreezenot the toxic kind designed for cars.

I know, algaecide was also on the list of chemicals you need . Well get to that in this next step. Lets carry on, yeah?

Start By Taking A Free Chlorine Reading And Balancing It

The first and most common cause of cloudy water is low free chlorine levels. Low free chlorine indicates you have chloramine that turns water cloudy, smells more of chlorine, and cannot sanitize your pool water by killing harmful germs and bacteria causing algae and ammonia.

As such, if your pool water is cloudy, the first thing you should do is to measure your free or combined chlorine you can get the value of combined chlorine by deducting the value of FC from Total Chlorine.

If you have your FC below 3 ppm or combined chlorine above 0.5 ppm, whether it’s a saltwater or non-saltwater pool, FC is low and you need to shock your swimming pool immediately to fix cloudy water and kill bacteria before you get algae or ammonia in your pool.

If you have a saltwater pool and it’s cloudy, the damage is already done and raising the percentage setting in your saltwater chlorine generator or your pump’s run-time will not help much in clearing cloudy water. You have to shut down your SWCG and shock your saltwater pool manually using harsh chlorine just like non-saltwater pools.

Is Green Pool Water Harmful To Swim In

Algae, in and of itself, might not be harmful. People have actually eaten algae for hundreds of years. But where there’s algae, there’s bacteria, and that most definitely can make you sick. Green pools might also harbor bacteria, viruses, parasites and other pathogens, which could possibly make you sick. They can enter a swimmer’s body by way of the eyes, ears, nose, throat, and even a small skim cut. The result of swimming in green pool water could intestinal problems, stomach aches, infections, fever, and diarrhea.

Fourth Step: Pump And Filter

Why is my pool still green after adding chlorine? Check your filter for clogs from the haze-jade green water. So depending on your filter, run it for a few days like you would do on ordinary occasions. If you want quick results, backwash your filter four times. Make this frequent to prevent your filter from clogging.

Cleaning An Above Ground Pool

QUESTION: First I started filling the pool and the water had a little yellow color. Then we went to the pool store which told us to use Metal Magic algaecide and shock. First we put Metal Magic in. We ran pump for 48 hrs and then we added the algaecide. Ran pump 12 hrs then we added the shock. The pool still hasn’t changed…. what can we do?

ANSWER: We first need to understand what each product does. A metal sequestrant does not remove metal from pool water. It holds it in solution until it can get filtered. Then you backwash the metal out. Because metal sequestrants break down over time and get filtered and backwashed out, you need to weekly dose your pool if you have high iron and copper. Metal sequestrants that are based on HEDP, phosphonic acid or something similar are the most effective.

Jack’s Magic Blue, Purple, and Pink Pink Stuff, Metal Magic, Metal Free, & Metal Klear are very good. Be sure any algaecides you use don’t have any metals or copper in them. You don’t want to add to the problem. An algaecide does not remove green pool water or kill algae. It is used for preventative measures only, normally on a weekly basis. You can use a PolyQuat 60 algaecide when shocking a pool as added insurance against an algae bloom because the algae will be consumed by the chlorine.

Proper Kiddie Pool Cleaning Techniques

There are different cleaning methods that work for kiddie pools. These options include emptying the pool and simply filling it back up with water when it’s clean. The second method is to treat the swimming pool with chemicals such as chlorine or algaecide. Only use chemicals for treatment when you have proper knowledge and can accurately measure the cleaners being used.

With the smaller design of most kiddie pools, changing the water is the most convenient method of cleaning. You can tip the pool to drain, siphon the water with a hose, then use a wet/dry vacuum to remove any residual water left on the pool floor. Next, using a circular motion, apply the cleaning solution to the surface of the entire swimming pool. This removes dirt, bacteria and other debris that attaches to the pool. Use a garden hose to rinse the pool and remove the cleaning solution and dirt. Performing this type of cleaning every few days prevents algae from forming in stagnant water.

Kiddie pools vary widely in their size and so does the chemical-to-water ratio used for cleaning and disinfecting them. When using chlorine bleach for cleaning, use these amounts:

5 cups

Using a swimming pool testing kit lets you monitor the pH balance of the chemical-to-water ratio accurately with litmus papers. Keeping an eye on the alkali and acidity levels helps prevent too much chemical buildup from occurring.

Tips For Overwintering Cacti

When shocking the pool, consider a few factors. How big is the pool? How “green” is it? If your pool is a normal residential-sized pool of 13,000-25,000 gallons , then your options are liquid chlorine or granular shock. The choice depends on what type of filter it has.

  • If it is a sand or cartridge filter, I will use liquid chlorine, about 10 gallons, or four of the yellow “Jerry-jugs.” I use liquid chlorine because granular chlorine will leave a residue that is harder to filter out.
  • If the pool has a DE filter, then I will use granular chlorine . This article shows how I shock a pool with a DE filter. Remember to test the water before adding shock. The pH should ideally be low when shocking the pool because shocking the pool will raise the pH level.

Remember that shocking alone does not clear up a green or cloudy pool that is what the filter is for. It doesn’t matter how much shock you put in the pool if you have a bad filter.

Give The Pool A Shock

If the pool is still very cloudy or green, you may need to shock it to make it safe to swim in again.

  • First, make sure that the filter system is working properly and the chemicals are still at the proper levels.
  • Next, mix up your chlorine shock treatment. Add 1 pound of your preferred shock treatment into a 5-gallon bucket of water about 3/4 full .
  • Slowly pour this mixture directly into the pool water. Do NOT add shock directly to the skimmer, as undiluted, full strength pool chemicals can damage filters, heaters and pumps.
  • Maintain the higher shock levels to kill off all the algae. This can take several days and involve multiple treatments to get combined Chloramines and FC levels to the right levels that clear the water. While performing the treatment, brush and clean the pool thoroughly every day to remove dead algae and other dirt.

How To Lower Your Pool Water Level

Clearing Up a Green Above Ground Pool (Step-by-Step)

You may need to lower your pool water level after a heavy rain or if you forgot to turn your hose off when filling the pool. To lower the level, you may be able to use the multiport valve on your pool pump or the drain if it has one. If not, you can use an external, submersible pump or siphon the water out with a hose.

    Green Pool Water Not Algae

One fast way to turn your pool water green is by accidentally adding chlorine to a pool with bromine. You are suppose to shock bromine pools with chlorine, just make sure not to mix the two chemicals, and do not add to much chlorine.

Usually the green will go away fast if you do not add to much chlorine.

Another way to get green water without algae present is if you have a lot of copper in the pool water. This can happen if you fill your pool with well water, or use to much copper based algaecide.

This is a little tougher to clear up. It is best to avoid this situation which you can by using the Hayward filler sock which helps catch the copper while the pool is filling up. Once it happens, you can add some metal out and cotton material in your skimmer to try and filter it out.

One other thing you can do is use a chlorine remover to lower the effect.

You can still use the pool as long as you can still safely monitor swimmers.

If you want to clean a green pool fast, remember filter are not made to do it. So kill algae, wait, and vacuum to waste Then filter the pool constantly, monitoring filter pressure as you go.

*Bonus Tip: Maintain a chlorine level at all times, no lower than 2PPM while cleaning a green pool.
