How To Clear Up A Green Swimming Pool Fast

One of the worst sights a swimming pool owner can come across is green-looking water in their pool. However, it usually looks worse than it actually is and it can be cleaned up within just a few days. If the pool water appears to be green its basically because there are algae growing in the pool. But with the proper chemicals, a good filter system and a little bit of time, you can have your water crystal clear in a matter of days. Youll just need to test the water, balance the chemicals properly and clean and shock the pool.

Testing the waterYou can test the pH and chlorine levels in the pool water by using a chemical testing kit. If the chlorine level is under one ppm theres a good chance that algae can take over the pool and turn the water a shade of green. You can easily and quickly test the chemical levels in the water with a liquid and test-strip kit.

    Clean the swimming pool

Before adding any chemicals you should brush the sides of the pool as theyre also likely to be green. The algae will find its way to the sides and bottom of the pool and it should be scrubbed off.

    Inspect the filter

Its a good idea to make sure theres no debris clogging your filter. You may want to backwash it before adding any chemicals to make sure its working effectively. You should also let the filter run 24 hours per day when trying to clean up the green water.

Cause #: Circulation & Filtration Issues

Pool water that isnt being properly circulated is always at risk of becoming cloudy water.

Thats because circulation pushes your pool water through your filter system, so without it, the filter cant work its magic and keep your water squeaky clean.

There are a few moving parts to this, so lets go through them.

    Is Your Pump Powerful Enough?

A pool pump is a core part of your filtration system as it cycles your water through the filter in order to remove debris and maintain circulation, this prevents the water from stagnating which eventually breeds other problems.

With that in mind, you need to make sure your pump has the ability to cycle the entire contents of your pool at least once per day. Whats more, youll need a pump that can complete a turnover in an 8 hour period.

The speed at which a pump completes a turnover is based on two factors:

  • The volume of water in your pool
  • The flow-rate of the pump itself
  • Note: Flow-rate tells you how many gallons of water pass through the pump each minute, and its appropriately measured in gallons per minute .

To properly size your pump, divide your water volume by 8, then divide again by 60. What youre left with is your pools required turnover rate in GPM. The flow-rate of your pool pump should be at least the same.

Is Your Pump Suited To Your Filter?

You wouldnt put all that effort into correctly sizing your pool pump only to neglect your pool filter, would you?

Detox Diet Weekwhat To Drink And What Not To Drink:

On a Detox Diet Week- DO drink fruit infused waters:

Ive included some fruit infused detox waters below for those of you who dont like the taste of water, or need a push to help you drink more, just be sure not to use any artificial sweeteners in your water.

On a Weight Loss Detox- DONT drink processed water flavorings:

Those little packets of flavoring that people add to their water actually are packed full of toxins that cause fat storage, weight gain, migraines, breakouts the list goes on and on, so skip the flavor packets and go all natural.

On a 7 Day Detox- DO drink coffee or tea :

What about coffee? Ive got you covered, ideally its good to skip coffee during this Detox Diet Week, but thats not always so easy to do. So limit yourself to one cup per day, you can have 1-2 cups of organic herbal tea, so if you drink coffee in the morning, choose herbal tea for your second cup in the afternoon.

On a Detox for Weight Loss- DONT have fake sugars

Now that you know coffee in moderation is ok, lets talk about what to put in it. We are trying to skip processed sugars this week, so in lieu of sugar or flavored creamers choose an all natural creamer and an all natural sweetener.

How To Clear Cloudy Pool Water Fast: 6 Simple Steps

by Pool and Patio Editorial | Mar 18, 2020 | Pool Cleaning Tips, Repair |

Your swimming pool water might get cloudy and unclear which might be an ugly, unappealing sight. With this guide, youre going to learn, in 6 easy steps, how you can bring back the 100% transparency of your pool for better enjoyment of your leisure time.

Before we pounce on it, let learn some things about cloudy pool water. They say the easiest solution to a problem is finding the cause, and that seems to hold true for every situation. If you have a cloudy pool, you may clear it, and after some time, the problem will come up again because you didnt address the cause. If you find out what is causing the cloudy pool and rectify it, youre sure to stay longer without having a recurrence. That is why in the next section, we are going to learn some of the causes of the cloudy pool.

A Few Finishing Touches To Get Rid Of Pool Algae Faster

Clear up cloudy pool water fast with Miraclear Blue

While your pool filter will eventually clear up the pool by itself, there are a few things that you can do to speed up the process.

    Vacuum again

While your earlier vacuuming may have helped clear up the water, it probably didnt get everything.

So vacuum your pool a second time. This helps to capture the debris you might have missed the first time around.

    Clean out the filter often

While your pool clears out the rest of the algae, it stores it in your filter. And it piles up fast.

This is why its important to clean out your filter several times while youre getting rid of algae: its the best way to prevent buildup and keep the algae removal process going smoothly.

Retest your water every 12-24 hours

After spending all that time fixing your green pool, making sure your hard work pays off is important.

So keep testing your water every 12 hours to check if any adjustments are needed to get it in balance.

    Overnight Chlorine Loss Test

Once your water is crystal clear, you may think that you are done. This is where many people go wrong and have green water again within a matter of days. The only way to know that you have killed all of the algae in your pool is to perform an overnight chlorine loss test. Two factors will cause the chlorine in your pool to lower: direct sunlight and algae. By performing this test overnight, you are eliminating the sunlight factor to determine if there are any remaining algae in the water.

Record your free chlorine test in the evening after the sun has set. Before the sunrise, test the levels again. If the free chlorine has stayed the same or dropped by less than 1, you have passed the test. If not, then you will need to keep S.L.A.M.-ing.

If you are done, you will need to let chlorine levels drop down to your pools normal range before letting anyone swim. It would be good to keep checking all of the chemical levels at this point. Sometimes shocking can throw the pool out of equilibrium, so make sure your chemistry is balanced before letting anyone swim.

Stop Cloudy Pool Water Before It Starts

Clearing up your pool isnt a massive undertaking, but depending on the problem it can cost you a bit in chemicals and elbow grease. But youll appreciate it when you leave the cloudy pool behind and dive back into sparkling water.

Make sure the only clouds you see are the ones in the sky. Weekly testing and balancing, skimming and vacuuming, basic filter maintenance, and regular shocking will keep your pool healthy and clear all season long.

    Check The Filter System

A cartridge filter, sand filter, or DE filter are the three types you might be using on your pool. Regardless of the kind you have, the filter must be working properly and running for at least ten straight hours every single day.

If the filter isnt clean, dirt and other particles get filtered back into the pool and make the water cloudy. If you have a pool with a backwashing system, ensure that you are doing this consistently.

Backwashing cleans out the filter and gets rid of dirty water so that when you turn the filter back on, it works as a water clarifier. If you have a cartridge filter, the best way to clean a cartridge pool filter is to do it regularly. Keep up on cleaning the cartridges as much as possible so that the algae doesnt go back into the pool.

Five: Shock The Swimming Pool And Maintain Shock Levels

How To Fix and Clear Cloudy Pool Water

This step involves adding chlorine to raise your FC to shock level in relation to Cyanuric acid level in your water, and maintaining FC at that level by adding more chlorine when FC falls below maximum target range to be able to kill all agae, bacteria, and ammonia.

It’s important to mention that killing algae is an experimental process therefore, results may not appear after one day. Clear pool water is usually achieved after a few days of thorough shocking and may go upto a week depending on how strong the algae has hit your pool.

Chlorine levels in the water may be high as a result of this process however, it will reduce with time. Don’t worry too much. The main thing here is to focus on the clarity of the water.

Depending on the type of algae and how strong the algae has affected your pool, you may not know the exact amount of chlorine your pool will need to get rid of the algae, as such, be prepared with sufficient amount even if you will keep the rest for later use.

If you can avoid using Cal hypo chlorine shock and use liquid chlorine the better because you will have quick results and the easier your work will be when balancing chemicals afterwards.

    Two: Remove Large Debris

Large and visible debris should be dealt with first. Here, you will need to use a large leaf net instead of the hand skimmer. Note: A large leaf net will stir up the entire pool and move debris that has settled on the bottom. As a result, the water may look dirtier, but it will eventually settle down with time.

    Use A Pool Flocculant

A pool flocculant works in a similar manner to a pool clarifier, although pool flocculants will commonly take the form of a powder that will need to be dissolved in water before being added to the surface of the pool.

After the mixture has been added to your pool, you will need to turn off your pools filter for at least two days, as this will allow the flocculant to tackle the particles in the water without the risk of it being filtered away.

Like pool clarifiers, pool flocculants have the ability to clump particles together in large pockets, which then sink to the bottom of the pool once the process is complete.

To finish the job, you will then need to remove the clumps using a manual vacuum, as this is the only way to properly clean the pool.

Aside from the complex filtration system in many pools, you have to understand the basic chemistry of the water to get it clean. You are not alone if you still have a cloudy pool after shocking it.

People get frustrated when the water is not crystal clear, but they dont understand that numerous things could be wrong.

The pool filter could be broken, chlorine levels could be low, or the other chemical levels might not be at the right parts per million for your pool size.

Cloudiness in the pool is an indication that something is wrong, and your pool chemicals or pool pump might have to be adjusted. If you need to get the swimming pool ready for summer, use this pool guide to reference some possible issues.
