Thats because circulation pushes your pool water through your filter system, so without it, the filter cant work its magic and keep your water squeaky clean.
There are a few moving parts to this, so lets go through them.
Is Your Pump Powerful Enough?
A pool pump is a core part of your filtration system as it cycles your water through the filter in order to remove debris and maintain circulation, this prevents the water from stagnating which eventually breeds other problems.
With that in mind, you need to make sure your pump has the ability to cycle the entire contents of your pool at least once per day. Whats more, youll need a pump that can complete a turnover in an 8 hour period.
The speed at which a pump completes a turnover is based on two factors:

To properly size your pump, divide your water volume by 8, then divide again by 60. What youre left with is your pools required turnover rate in GPM. The flow-rate of your pool pump should be at least the same.

Overnight Chlorine Loss Test
Once your water is crystal clear, you may think that you are done. This is where many people go wrong and have green water again within a matter of days. The only way to know that you have killed all of the algae in your pool is to perform an overnight chlorine loss test. Two factors will cause the chlorine in your pool to lower: direct sunlight and algae. By performing this test overnight, you are eliminating the sunlight factor to determine if there are any remaining algae in the water.
Record your free chlorine test in the evening after the sun has set. Before the sunrise, test the levels again. If the free chlorine has stayed the same or dropped by less than 1, you have passed the test. If not, then you will need to keep S.L.A.M.-ing.
If you are done, you will need to let chlorine levels drop down to your pools normal range before letting anyone swim. It would be good to keep checking all of the chemical levels at this point. Sometimes shocking can throw the pool out of equilibrium, so make sure your chemistry is balanced before letting anyone swim.

Stop Cloudy Pool Water Before It Starts
Clearing up your pool isnt a massive undertaking, but depending on the problem it can cost you a bit in chemicals and elbow grease. But youll appreciate it when you leave the cloudy pool behind and dive back into sparkling water.

Check The Filter System
A cartridge filter, sand filter, or DE filter are the three types you might be using on your pool. Regardless of the kind you have, the filter must be working properly and running for at least ten straight hours every single day.
If the filter isnt clean, dirt and other particles get filtered back into the pool and make the water cloudy. If you have a pool with a backwashing system, ensure that you are doing this consistently.
Backwashing cleans out the filter and gets rid of dirty water so that when you turn the filter back on, it works as a water clarifier. If you have a cartridge filter, the best way to clean a cartridge pool filter is to do it regularly. Keep up on cleaning the cartridges as much as possible so that the algae doesnt go back into the pool.
Five: Shock The Swimming Pool And Maintain Shock Levels
This step involves adding chlorine to raise your FC to shock level in relation to Cyanuric acid level in your water, and maintaining FC at that level by adding more chlorine when FC falls below maximum target range to be able to kill all agae, bacteria, and ammonia.
It’s important to mention that killing algae is an experimental process therefore, results may not appear after one day. Clear pool water is usually achieved after a few days of thorough shocking and may go upto a week depending on how strong the algae has hit your pool.
Chlorine levels in the water may be high as a result of this process however, it will reduce with time. Don’t worry too much. The main thing here is to focus on the clarity of the water.
Depending on the type of algae and how strong the algae has affected your pool, you may not know the exact amount of chlorine your pool will need to get rid of the algae, as such, be prepared with sufficient amount even if you will keep the rest for later use.
If you can avoid using Cal hypo chlorine shock and use liquid chlorine the better because you will have quick results and the easier your work will be when balancing chemicals afterwards.

Two: Remove Large Debris
Large and visible debris should be dealt with first. Here, you will need to use a large leaf net instead of the hand skimmer. Note: A large leaf net will stir up the entire pool and move debris that has settled on the bottom. As a result, the water may look dirtier, but it will eventually settle down with time.
Use A Pool Flocculant
A pool flocculant works in a similar manner to a pool clarifier, although pool flocculants will commonly take the form of a powder that will need to be dissolved in water before being added to the surface of the pool.
After the mixture has been added to your pool, you will need to turn off your pools filter for at least two days, as this will allow the flocculant to tackle the particles in the water without the risk of it being filtered away.
Like pool clarifiers, pool flocculants have the ability to clump particles together in large pockets, which then sink to the bottom of the pool once the process is complete.
To finish the job, you will then need to remove the clumps using a manual vacuum, as this is the only way to properly clean the pool.
