Is A Bird Pooping On Me Good Luck

If a bird poops on you or anything you own, its said to be a sign of good luck! With as many birds as there are in the sky, its supposedly more rare to be pooped on by one than it is to win the lottery. This actually prompts many people to play the lotto when they do get pooped on by a winged wayfarer.

Try An Ultrasonic Bird Repellent

Grackles flock with blackbirds and starlings, so thats why they tend to form an enormous flock.

Therefore, it is not uncommon for you to see a whole population of grackle swarm on your property, especially during their times of common grackle migration.

There is another method of deterring them, especially from trees and a variety of other areas.

Some sound repellents can combine the specific frequency that is audible to this bird species and that will put it off with reflective eye diverters or the sounds of predators.

Each species is distinguished by its behavior and activity peculiarities. That is why combinations of elimination methods vary depending on both building type and species. It is also essential to be able to switch between several treatments quickly as birds tend to get used with most of them with time.

As Holly K. Ober from the University of Florida explains, the trick to effective use of deterrents is to begin using deterrents as soon as possible after the problem starts so animals do not develop a habit of using the resource, switch hazing tactics regularly so animals do not become used to a deterrent that is meant to scare them, and use tactics that appeal to more than one sensory modality so animals are bothered in several ways and remain cautious and confused.

The Common Grackle Has Turned Me Into A Water

This article was published more than 6 years ago. Some information may no longer be current.

Facts & Arguments is a daily personal piece submitted by readers. Have a story to tell? See our guidelines

It starts around the end of March. They begin circling the backyard, mocking me from the fence and tree tops. That annoying call that sounds like the kid from The Simpsons, the one who points his finger and laughs, “Haw, Haw!” That is what I hear on cold spring mornings in my fuzzy pink slippers and housecoat, aiming a Nerf water gun at my sworn enemies.

The common grackle: my nemesis. For those unfamiliar with this winged doom, grackles are black birds with a purple iridescent shine on their chests: Devil airborne beasties with yellow beady eyes, they are noisy, aggressive pint-sized vultures. These are seriously nasty birds. Grackles will take over the nests of other species, destroying any eggs or hatchlings in the process. They are also known to swarm and kill other birds.

Like a sniper, I aim my water gun at the trees, waiting for a rustle of leaves before blasting. Occasionally, when I see a confused neighbour retreating from their window with a worried face, I wonder what prompted me to this extremism. How did I come to this?

I decided to wait out the rest of the nesting season indoors. Message received, grackles. Well played, well played indeed.

How To Keep Ducks And Geese From Swimming In Your Pool

Intex Pool. How To Keep Flies and Birds Off Your Pool Right Now!!

Deterring larger birds like ducks or geese from swimming in your pool might need another type of tactic than a regular garden bird. There are some things you can do to modify the area around your swimming pool that will keep these birds from taking a swim. These include:

  • Food: Do not feed or provide food for ducks or geese. This will encourage them to come back.
  • Grass: Limit the amount of grass in the area, as some ducks and geese feed on grass.
  • Removal: Ducks and geese flock together, so removing the offenders will lessen the likelihood of returning birds. You will need to contact the U.S. Department of Agriculture to learn about removal.

Why Do Blackbirds Squawk When I Leave The Pool

When I am out there now, just the shake of the bbs in the gun scares them away, to only come back when I leave. They are very pesky, bold & persistent. They squawk like mad at me when Im out there. It only gets better after they are done nesting.

My Final Thoughts On Starling Proof Bird Feeders:

If you have a big starling problem in your backyard, it may be best to combine strategies! Use starling-proof bird feeders along with foods that they dont enjoy.

For example, you could put striped sunflower, safflower, and whole peanuts in your hopper, tube, or tray feeders. Then put food that starlings love like sunflower chips, peanut pieces, or cracked corn inside a starling-proof bird feeder.

What To Do About Bird Droppings In The Swimming Pool

How To Get Rid Of Black Birds In Attic

Theres nothing like a swim in an outdoor pool in beautiful summer weather. As the open air is the domain of natures flying creatures, however, the occasional splat of bird droppings in the pool is to be expected. What, if anything, needs to be done about bird droppings in the pool?

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, many germs that might be present in bird droppings can infect humans, although few, if any, outbreaks have been associated with bird droppings. Duck and goose droppings are highlighted by CDC as potentially containing E. coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter or Cryptosporidium. Fortunately, in a well-maintained pool most pathogens in bird droppings are killed by chlorine within minutes, according to CDC. Cryptosporidium, a microscopic parasite surrounded by a tough chlorine-resistant outer shell, can be removed by a well-maintained pool filtration system.

Addressing Bird of Droppings in the Pool

CDC recommends pool managers and backyard pool owners treat bird droppings in the pool in the same way that they would respond to finding formed human feces in the pool. The goal is to remove the waste material, if possible, and disinfect the water by taking the following steps:

As a means of keeping the nest clean and waste-free, baby grackles release their waste in what are called fecal sacks. As a defense mechanism, the species try to mask their location from predators by dropping the fecal matter in bodies of water. They usually return to the same water body every time.

Scaring In Urban And Rural Areas

Scaring in urban and rural areas varies according to specific safety rules, scale of the issue and the property to be protected. As a rule, the methods are also determined by the birds lifestyle, variety and accessibility of its fodder base.

In large cities most often you will encounter sparrows, pigeons and crows, and seagulls in coastal zones. Crows, seagulls and pigeons pick up trash and scatter it. Sparrows cause much less harm, but they can penetrate warehouses and shops and damage groceries. All of the mentioned species litter on windowsills, under cornice, trees and various buildings. They carry diseases in third-world countries.

Limited-effect methods, such as applying a gel or using a motion-activated water sprinkler of a small radius or spikes, are convenient for urban areas.

Outside the cities, the range of control methods expands. Fruit trees and large fields can be sprayed with repellents. More powerful motion-activated water sprinklers and scarecrows are installed near houses, metal or plastic reflective tapes are hung.

Install A Bird Deterrent Flying Kite

Whenever spring comes along, its time to put your best efforts into controlling the grackle population you have on your property.

Thats because if you dont, they will nest, lay grackle eggs, and sooner rather than later, youll have a number of baby grackles in your garden, yard, or orchard.

Hanging visual deterrents in trees is one way to stop grackle migration and ensure that they dont make a home on your property. But using a bird deterrent flying kite can be another method.

You can simply tie it to the side of your house, or one of your trees and the kite will do its job by basically telling the grackles that theres a hawk just waiting to eat them for lunch.

No matter the model that you will end up choosing, most come with telescopic poles with an adjustable length, so they can deter several different bird species.

In general, when picking such a product, its a good idea to opt for good reflective visual effects and durable materials, especially since the kite might always become the victim of strong winds if its poorly made.

As another plus of using this method, theres nothing stopping you from using the kite for what it is, a source of endless fun for children.

Got Grackles 4 Ideas To Help Keep Pool Areas Clear Of Nuisance Birds

Get rid of birds without harming them

I had never heard of the word Grackle before but many of our clients seem to know it well. A Grackle, a North American Blackbird, is a nuisance bird to any pool owner as they not only litter the pool deck with their large droppings but also conveniently land their unsanitary bombs into the swimming pool. This time last year, Curt and Debbie from Paris, Ontario introduced me to the Grackle and what they can do once they take over a backyard and nest close by the pool. Soon after, another client from Dunnville, Ontario, approached me with the same problem.

Depending on the weather and from what clients have shared, it seem that Grackles begin nesting sometime in April and can linger until as long as early June.

I reached out to Curt and Debbie and asked if they could share some of the things that they had tried to help chase their Grackles away or deter them from nesting in the first place and here are some tricks they found to be successful:

Check Bird Feeding Laws

  • If your neighbour keeps feeding birds and it’s becoming a nuisance to you, check to see if there are any bird feeding laws on the books in your area. If you live in a neighborhood with an HOA, there may be council rules on feeding birds that can be enforced. Some areas consider feeding birds a statutory nuisance. For instance, in Hastings Borough in England, the council takes action against residents who excessively feed nuisance birds including pigeons, house sparrows, starlings, gulls and geese. And in San Francisco, the San Francisco Department of Public Health says feeding pigeons is not allowed in the city.

Make Access To The Property Impossible

If you need a barrier that these blackbirds cant permeate, Bird Netting is the best solution. Netting will be especially good for small crops. Bird Netting is recommended for excluding grackles from specific areas. The product is effective everywhere when it is properly installed.

    Consider the following:

    • Where to buy: at Bird-X.

Ideal for use: crops and vineyards.

Interesting Bird netting products are 100% effective. However, it is sometimes impossible to protect an entire property with barrier solutions. In this case, we suggest using companion products like visual scares, sonic repellers or taste aversions.

    • StealthNet creates an impenetrable barrier that denies grackles the access to any structure on your property.Where to buy: at Bird Barrier.Durability: The product is made of high density, ultra-violet twine that will last 10 years or more if installed correctly.Installation: the netting is installed to the cable with rings.Benefits: Stealth Net is almost invisible and is available in many pre-cut sizes and colors black, white and stone.

This strategy is my favorite way to keep starlings away from bird feeders.

Lets look at the body type of a European Starling. Specifically, take a closer look at their beak.

The shape of a starlings beak is long, pointy, and soft, which is perfect for eating invertebrates such as insects, spiders, worms, snails, and caterpillars. Their beak also allows them to eat fruit, grains, and small seeds.

If you are using any of the below foods at your feeding station, then you are at risk for a starling invasion!

How To Keep Birds Away From Your Pool

The best way to prevent birds from pooping in your pool is to keep them out of the general swimming area in the first place. There are some easy modifications you can make to your pool area that will make the space less attractive to birds. Some of these basic modifications include:

    • Remove food: Move or remove bird seed and bird feeders so as not to attract birds to the pool.
    • Neaten up the wildlife: Trim back trees and bushes that hang around the pool area to eliminate roosting areas
    • Look out for edible plants: Remove any edible plants and berries that might attract birds to the pool area.

What Sound Will Scare Birds Away

    Ultrasonic scarers

Ultrasonic devices are static sound-emitting bird deterrents, which, in theory, will annoy birds to keep them away from enclosed or semi-enclosed areas. Ultrasonic scarers are not harmful to birds, however, there is debate around birds ability to hear these frequencies at loud enough decibels.
