It starts around the end of March. They begin circling the backyard, mocking me from the fence and tree tops. That annoying call that sounds like the kid from The Simpsons, the one who points his finger and laughs, “Haw, Haw!” That is what I hear on cold spring mornings in my fuzzy pink slippers and housecoat, aiming a Nerf water gun at my sworn enemies.

The common grackle: my nemesis. For those unfamiliar with this winged doom, grackles are black birds with a purple iridescent shine on their chests: Devil airborne beasties with yellow beady eyes, they are noisy, aggressive pint-sized vultures. These are seriously nasty birds. Grackles will take over the nests of other species, destroying any eggs or hatchlings in the process. They are also known to swarm and kill other birds.

Like a sniper, I aim my water gun at the trees, waiting for a rustle of leaves before blasting. Occasionally, when I see a confused neighbour retreating from their window with a worried face, I wonder what prompted me to this extremism. How did I come to this?

I decided to wait out the rest of the nesting season indoors. Message received, grackles. Well played, well played indeed.

Black birds are eating our suet and so the woodpeckers are staying away. The blackbirds eat a cake of suet in a day! Is there anyway to discourage them, actually send them on their way? We have so many other birds we’d rather be feeding. Thanks.

Whenever spring comes along, its time to put your best efforts into controlling the grackle population you have on your property.

Thats because if you dont, they will nest, lay grackle eggs, and sooner rather than later, youll have a number of baby grackles in your garden, yard, or orchard.

Hanging visual deterrents in trees is one way to stop grackle migration and ensure that they dont make a home on your property. But using a bird deterrent flying kite can be another method.

You can simply tie it to the side of your house, or one of your trees and the kite will do its job by basically telling the grackles that theres a hawk just waiting to eat them for lunch.

No matter the model that you will end up choosing, most come with telescopic poles with an adjustable length, so they can deter several different bird species.

I had never heard of the word Grackle before but many of our clients seem to know it well. A Grackle, a North American Blackbird, is a nuisance bird to any pool owner as they not only litter the pool deck with their large droppings but also conveniently land their unsanitary bombs into the swimming pool. This strategy is my favorite way to keep starlings away from bird feeders.

Lets look at the body type of a European Starling. Specifically, take a closer look at their beak.

The shape of a starlings beak is long, pointy, and soft, which is perfect for eating invertebrates such as insects, spiders, worms, snails, and caterpillars. Their beak also allows them to eat fruit, grains, and small seeds.

How To Keep Birds Away From Your Pool

The best way to prevent birds from pooping in your pool is to keep them out of the general swimming area in the first place. There are some easy modifications you can make to your pool area that will make the space less attractive to birds. Some of these basic modifications include:

• Remove food: Move or remove bird seed and bird feeders so as not to attract birds to the pool.
• Neaten up the wildlife: Trim back trees and bushes that hang around the pool area to eliminate roosting areas
• Look out for edible plants: Remove any edible plants and berries that might attract birds to the pool area.
