Types Of Intex Pool Heaters

Intex pool heaters are often measured in BTU or British Thermal Unit. If a higher BTU is indicated that means the quicker that machine can heat your swimming pool.

Gas Pool Heaters

Using gas heaters is one of the most common ways you can heat an Intex pool as its fairly easy to use. And can heat your index pool quickly.

Most gas heaters use either propane gas or natural gas to heat your swimming pool.

The BTU that you need will highly depend on your pool size. The larger it is the higher BTU your pool requires for your gas heater.

Like any typical machine that uses gas, these heaters emit air pollution and can be expensive to operate as they can cost you anywhere from $300 to $600 per month. Of course, you also have to pay for the upfront cost of acquiring a gas heater thats anywhere between $1,000 to $1,500.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps work by either using both electricity and your surrounding air or by electricity and a water source.

Heat pumps are a more efficient way to heat an Intex pool and will only cost $50 to $150 to operate monthly.

The main drawback of using heat pumps is that theyre more expensive to acquire than a gas heater. Their price usually ranges from $2,000 up to $4,000.

Solar Heating System

It works by utilizing your installed solar panels to transfer heat from the sun to your pool by letting your pool water pass through them.

Solar Mats Or Edpm Mats For Heating The Pool

These solar mats are commonly used to heat small swimming pools that are taken down in the winter. In a pool heating system based on EDPM or solar mats, the water is pumped through the mats. There it is heated by the sun. The sun causes the solar mats to become warm. The mats then transfer the heat to the pool water.

As indicated earlier, this solution is intended mainly for smaller pools. First of all, because a large-volume pool requires more time to pump the entire volume of water through the solar mats. As a result, it takes a very long time to completely heat up a large pool with these mats.

In addition, you need a large area to install the mats. The area of solar mats should preferably be as large as the area of the swimming pool. These heating mats are usually installed on a flat roof. This means, however, that the pump must have sufficient capacity to pump the water all the way up to the roof. If the pump is not powerful enough, the water will heat more slowly.

A serious disadvantage of these EPDM or solar mats is their weather dependence. Without sunlight, the mats will not transfer enough heat to the pool water.

The price of such mats amounts to around 50 per square metre . For an 8 m by 4 m pool, this yields a purchase cost of approximately 1,600.

What Is The Coldest Temperature At Which A Heat Pump Can Be Operated

How To Heat Up My Above Ground Pool

Heat pumps can commonly operate down to 0 degrees, with some able to go much lower to -10 degrees, this again is the Madimack range of heat pumps. Within these cold temperatures you will find defrosting which is a process to protect the heater from freezing over in very low temperatures. This is an automatic process where a reversible valve releases the heated refrigerant at the compressor back to the condenser to stop it frosting.

We have also covered this in more detail when we explored if heat pumps can be used in the dead of winter.

Fitting A Swimming Pool Cover

An important tip is to install a swimming pool cover. Every type of cover, regardless of quality, will ensure than some of the heat remains in the water. Without a cover, a lot of heat is lost through evaporation, among other things. The higher the quality of the cover, the less heat is lost.

The best result is obtained with a roller shutter with solar slats. These slats absorb the sun’s rays and convert them into heat. This makes the swimming pool a few degrees warmer.

The period of time needed to heat up a swimming pool will vary based on size of the pool, the amount of water being heated and the equipment being used. Solar Blankets And Rings

A solar blanket is a great way to heat a pool and is an excellent choice for above-ground units that lack built-in heaters. Pools lose 75 percent of their heat through evaporation. Solar blankets stop this evaporation while absorbing and holding heat from the sun. You can use them to heat your pool by day and leave them on the pool to keep it warm at night. They use no energy and work well, but must cover 100 percent of the pool’s surface in order to work.

Some pool owners prefer solar rings to solar blankets. Solar rings work the same way as solar blankets but are much smaller, at 60 inches in diameter. This makes them much easier to maneuver and store than blankets, especially if you are working alone. Solar rings must cover only 70 to 80 percent of the pool’s surface and each one can generate 21,000 BTUs of heat per day.

If you opt for a solar blanket, consider installing a reel at the end of your pool. Attaching the blanket to the reel makes it much easier to roll up the cover by yourself and provides a place to store the blanket when it is not in use.

Calculating Heat Run Time

Best Way to Heat above Ground Pool

Heat pumps and heaters, alike, are sized according to the British Thermal Units per hour. One BTU raises one pound of water by 1 degree F. One gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds. So, 8.34 BTUs raise one gallon of water by 1 degree F.

FORMULA: Determine the time required to increase water temperature by 1 degree F

# of gallons in pool X 8.34 = ___________ lbs. of water

______ pounds of water / BTU Size = The hours it takes to raise the water temperature by 1 degree F

EXAMPLE

You have a 20,000-gallon pool and use a 125,000 BTU heater. Your water is currently 70 degrees F but you would like it to be a minimum of 80 degrees F. How long will it take before the pool water reaches 80 degrees F?

20,000 x 8.34= 166,800 lbs

166,800/125,000= 1.33 hrs to increase 1 degree

80-70= 10 degree difference

10 x 1.33= 13.34 hours of heating before the pool reaches 80 degrees F.

In most cases, calculations for a heat pump and heater are optimistic. For heat pumps, the efficiency varies depending on the air temperature and therefore the calculations cannot account for cooler temperatures. The listed BTU size is when the air is quite warm.

Everyone has their own preference regarding the temperature of their swimming water. Some want a temperature of at least 28 ° C, others are satisfied with a few degrees cooler. What Is The Most Efficient Setup For Heating A Pool And Spa

As per the reasoning above, I believe the best way of setting up the clients pool/spa combo is:

A single set of pool equipment

  • Valving to isolate the pool or the spa, etc.
  • Solar heating to heat the pool/spa
  • An on demand gas heating system to heat the spa

I also believe the following system will work:

  • A single set of pool equipment
  • Valving to isolate the pool or the spa, etc.
  • Heat pump to heat the pool/spa
  • An on demand gas heating system to heat the spa

Good luck with your decision.

PSNearly every pool builder I know tried using heat pumps about 7 10 years ago when the technology became widely available. As a result, most pool builders wont fit them due to lack of performance, contrasting the promises from sales brochures and representatives. I will fit and supply whatever the client chooses to use. I just wont warranty the performance of the units.

PPSIts been a long time since I had to work through calculations . Although I believe my theory is right and the compilation of the numbers correct, some measurements may be little out. These numbers are indicative only.
