How To Find The Leak In Your Swimming Pool

How to ACTUALLY FIND Leaks in Pool Liner – DON’T DYE YOUR WHOLE POOL!!!

So weve already established how to detect a leak in your pool versus a bad case of evaporation, but how do you actually find it?

For that, I recommend using a simple little swimming pool hack, called The Dye Trick. Its pretty straightforward, but Ill run you through the steps anyway because Im just nice like that.

Five Ways To Detect A Pool Leak

If you have a swimming pool, you might be aware that it loses some water due to evaporation, splash out and backwashing. It is normal for a pool to lose some water each day. But if your pool water level drops quickly, its cause for concern because it means that there is a leak somewhere in the pool. For example, losing a half-inch or inch of water in a day is indicative of a leak.

Unattended leaks not just increase your monthly water bill, but can also weaken the subsoil below the pool, which can cause damage to the pool wall. Obviously, it is important to locate the leak and have it repaired as soon as possible.

Fortunately, there are easy ways to determine if your pool has a leak. Certified Leak Detection makes these methodsavailable on our website for easy access at any time. The popular evaporation test otherwise known as the bucket test is typically the first DIY leak detection step that pool owners take.

How To Fix A Suction Side Air Leak In Your Pool

Air leaks are a common problem with the potential to cause serious damage to your pool equipment. If you notice bubbles coming out of your pool pump, such as an unusual splashing or frothing around your pump basket, your pool probably has an air leak. Air leaks occur in pools with above pool level pumping, on the suction side of the pump system, which is the part of the system between the skimmer and the pump impeller. If air enters this system, it can interfere with the systems ability to draw in pool water, causing overheating and even melting of important components.

Its therefore important to fix air leaks as quickly as possible, however, they can be challenging to locate. Although finding the leak can be a slow, tedious process, the problem is typically easy to fix once located. Try turning the pump off and notice if your pump or plumbing spits a small amount of water from somewhere. Back-pressure forces water out of the system, often indicating the location of the leak. Here are some of the most common areas where air leaks can develop:

Pump

Pool Skimmer

Examine your pool skimmer for any visible issues. Air can be pulled in through the skimmer if the pools water level is too low, so make sure the water level reaches up to about the middle of the skimmers opening. Check the weir, or skimmer flap, to ensure its moving freely because it can sometimes become clogged by leaves or other debris.

How Much Water Loss Does A Pool Leak Create

How Do I find An In

Your pool will evaporate naturally, which is why it is important to understand the signs of a leaking pool. Most pool leaks start out small and gradually increase if gone undetected. There are many reasons a leak can start, but the average leak starts off fairly small.

A general rule of thumb is that if you lose more than 1/4 of an inch of water each day, then there is likely a leak. This would total of 1.5 inches of water loss each week, which would be on the high side of the spectrum. While 1/4 of an inch is a sign of a leak, 1/8 is considered average evaporation.

Such a small fraction of water loss is hard to eyeball, so you must learn how to determine if a leak has occurred.

Fixing The Skimmer Leak

You can easily repair cracks in your skimmer body by using an underwater epoxy mix known as Pool Putty. You may use this on the front three sides of the skimmer, where it meets the concrete pool to fill in the gaps and cracks.

When using Pool Putty, you need to chip out all the loose or cracked material, mix equal parts of resin and hardener with pool water, then roll it into a snake. Push the putty in place and thats it. You may also pack in new plaster at the interface of your skimmer and concrete pool wall to seal up the area again. Ideally, plaster mix is very easy to work with because all you need to do is add and stir it to a spreadable consistency and apply it to the area with a putty knife.

Regardless of how big or small a leak in your pools skimmer is, remember that pool leaks are always worth your attention. They do not only waste your precious treated pool water, they can also lead to other issues such as rusted pool walls, sandy pool floor, and erosion if left untreated.

How To Find a Pool Leak Like a PRO! (pt. 1)

Locating a leak in your swimming pool starts with confirming that there is a leak.

  • Confirm that the Pool is Leaking – Get fill a 5-Gallon bucket with water and place it beside the pool. Use a grease pencil or piece of tape to mark the water level at a point about one inch above the waterline in the bucket and in the pool. After 24 hours compare the difference in the water levels in the bucket and in the pool. If the pools water level has dropped noticeably more than the buckets water level, you have a leak. If the levels are about the same as each other, then the loss of pool water is due to evaporation, not a leak.

  • Check the Pools Equipment – Leaks can happen at any point where water is present or travels. That means you must check the plumbing systems, filtration systems, around light housings and the pool pump for signs of leaks.

  • Take a 5-gallon bucket, fill it 2/3rds full with water, and mark the water level with a piece of tape or a pencil.
  • Place the bucket at poolside or on the steps of the pool.
  • Wait 24 hours and then check the water loss in the bucket versus the pool. If the loss is the same, more than likely the water loss is evaporation. If the water loss is different, this would indicate a leak in the pool.

Pool Leaks While Equipment Is Off

Either the pools pipes have sprung a leak or you may have suction-side leaks. When your filter pump is running, suction-side plumbing experiences vacuum-like conditions. Therefore, air is sucked through voids that otherwise leak.

Check if bubbling air is coming out of return lines or if you have air in the pools pump basket.

Water level stabilizing at a pool light, wall step, or wall fitting may indicate problems with those components.

How To Tell If Your In

Losing some water is natural for your pool due to evaporation, splashing, and backwash to your filter.

However, if you routinely have to fill more than 2 inches of water to your pool each week, you might have a leak. Depending upon its severity, there are some minor repairs that you can make on your own.

If you have tiling, papers, or deck, checking for any usual wet spots may give you clues as to the general area of a potential leak.

Is Leakage Greater When The Pump Is Circulating

How Do I Find an In-Ground Pool Leak? : Pool Maintenance

Leakage that is greater when the pump is circulating may be a sign of a leak in the return plumbing downstream from the pump, known as the pressure side of the system. After the pump is pressurized, leaks ranging from minor seepage to high-pressure sprays may develop in the any of the downstream plumbing fittings when the pump is running. Internal leaks may also occur in a defective filter multiport valve, causing the loss of clean water down the waste or backwash line into the sewer.

Is Water Loss Always A Leak

A sudden drop in the pool water level may not necessarily be the result of a leak. Evaporation rates from a pool can vary widely with changes in air temperature, relative humidity and wind speed. A simple test can rule out evaporation as a source of water loss in your pool. Fill a bucket with water and mark the level of water in the bucket and the water level in the pool. Place the bucket beside the pool and compare the two water levels 24 hours later. If the water level in the pool has dropped more than the level in the bucket, you probably have a leak.

How To Check For Plumbing Leaks In A Swimming Pool

How do I find a leak in my swimming pool? Testing for a ...

The average in-ground residential pool in the United States contains about 20,000 gallons of water. Given that volume, leakage from a pool may be subtle and hard to detect. Tracing it to its source can be even more difficult. Leaks in the concrete shell of the pool often require high-tech leak detection methods such as underwater listening devices and/or dye testing. Fortunately, the majority of pool leaks occur outside the pool and above-ground in the plumbing and pump/filter circuit. Answering some simple troubleshooting questions can identify these most common and easily repaired sources of leakage.
