Most problems that require a pool drain will take a minimum of an afternoon or two to unravel, but its advisable to now not let it sit down empty for any prolonged time period.

Clean & Restore Pool Surfaces

Using our Aqua-Guard Vinyl Liner Cleaner, it is recommended to clean the bathtub ring at the water lines to remove any oil, dirt or grease contaminants that accumulated over the winter months. These organics, if left to sit, can combine with UV rays of the sun and sanitizers once the water level is raised, and destroy not only the pattern on your liner but the vinyl itself. Working with a 2-3 length of wall, spray the vinyl surface with water. Next, spray the vinyl cleaner onto the surface and carefully scrub the vinyl with a sponge. Rinse the area with water from the pool and proceed to the next section to be cleaned. It is also suggested to clean inside the pools skimmer, walk-in steps and ladder treads.

Step 3: Clean and stow away your pool cover

Lay your cover out flat on a soft surface from your pool, like a field or lawn. After that, spray your cover off with a garden hose and brush away loose debris. If you usually keep your cover in the cover or basement, you may want to clean it to a greater extent. Properly fan-fold cover and store away.

Step 4: Remove winter plugs and skimmer ice compensator

Endeavor to remove all your winter drain plugs from around the pool, including return jets and step jets if you installed them. Replace your return lines with the proper eyeball or jet fittings.

The next thing is to remove the ice compensators from your skimmer buckets. Remember to remove the winter plugs from the bottom before replacing the skimmer baskets.

Start Circulation And Vacuum The Pool

A) Circulation

If your filtration equipment is abovewater level, you can now fill your pool with water to the top of the skimmer mouth opening. This will allow the extra water to be used for backwashing during or after vacuuming the pool. .

Hint: If your pool is equipped with a cartridge filter and your pool is relatively clean, it is not necessary to fill your water level to the top of the skimmer mouth opening. Proper water level is half or 2/3 covering the skimmer opening.

Place water in the pool pump to cover the basket and re-install the pump lid and o-ring. The handle on the dial valve should be placed to the filter position. Ensure that the valve at the front of the pump is in the open position. Turn the pump on. The circulation may take a few moments as the pump draws the water from the pool. This is normal. As the circulation begins, air bubbles will shoot out of the return fitting but will gradually subside. You should notice the pressure on the pressure gauge rising and begin to feel good water pressure coming out of each return fitting.

B) Vacuum the Pool

If your pool is equipped with a cartridge filter, ensure your cartridge is flushed well after your initial vacuum.

Hint: If your pool has excessive debris, you may want to consider vacuuming your pool on the waste position of your filter allowing fine debris to be discharged out the waste line. Unfortunately, this will drop your water level quickly.

But before you do that, its best to remove the pump lid and apply lube to the O-ring .

With the lid removed, begin filling the pump with water. Simply drop the hose into the pump, or fill up a 5-gallon bucket with water and pour it in. The objective here is to prime the pump and get it started.

Stop once you see the water draining back into the pool. Resecure the lid, ensure all return side valves are open and set the filter valve to the FILTER position.

Try shutting it off and repeating the previous steps. If that doesnt do the trick, alternate between opening one suction valve at a time.

With the pump running and set to FILTER, open the skimmer valves and temporarily close the main drain valve.

The next step will involve a watchful eye.

Releasing pressure

At the top of the filter sits the air relief valve. While keeping a careful eye on the air pressure gauge, open up the air relief valve and turn on the pump .

You should winterize your pool in the fall and the last thing you want to do is wait for a frost warning or a winter storm to start. Leave plenty of time so the pool is closed down properly before winter creeps around the corner.

Were going to take you through nine easy steps in the next section so youll be able to winterize your pool yourself. These are worth taking note of as hiring a professional can be expensive.

Opening An Inground Pool In The Spring

Background:

When I moved onto my familys property 40 years ago the 5-acre estate had 48, a 000-gallon concrete inground pool that was already 10 years old. The massive pool was built by a doctor who lived in the main house on the property. It was made by the Sylvan Pool Company. It is 40 plus by 28 ft. and runs from 10 ft. at the deepest end and 4 feet at the shallow end. A monster pool that was built with dozens of trees planted all around the perimeter.

When you own a pool, especially a big inground pool the most important tool you can bring to the table is your back There is no substitute for hard work. I will often tell people when they ask me whats the best product to buy or advice I can make. I say use your head but bring your back. Opening a pool is work. The bigger the pool the more work.

A pool needs to be manually be scrubbed. Scrub the heck out of the inside walls and floor once or twice a week. The skimmer and long handle pool brush is the most important tool you have at the pool site. Especially if there are trees around.

The most important maintenance plan for your pool doesnt come in a box or a bottle its you and some Humph. Even with the best chemicals and sanitizers algae can take hold of your pool and find a way to make a home for its self. That is especially true with concrete or old cement pools.

Remove Your Winter Cover

Gently remove the pool cover from the top of the pool by folding it over in sections until its completely folded at the end of the pool.

Its much easier to do this with a friend than to try doing it aloneyou can each stand on opposite sides of the pool and fold the sections evenly.

Be careful when removing the cover not to let any debris slip off and fall into the pool. This will shorten your cleaning tasks afterwards!

Adding All The Chemicals At The Same Time

Once all of your water is balanced with good pH, Alkalinity, Calcium and Cyanuric levels, its easy to be blinded by ambition by adding shock, algaecide, clarifier and a stain & scale treatment, or an entire Spring Start-Up Kit, all at the same time.

For the best results, adjust water balance and shock the pool on Day 1. On Day 2 add clarifier, on Day 3 add your stain & scale treatment, and on Day 4 or beyond, add algaecide. Shocking can deplete or deactivate other pool chemicals, so shock first, then add the other stuff over the following days, once chlorine level drops.
