This means that all calcium stays in your pool no matter how many times it is topped up. Also, concrete pool surfaces will also release some calcium into the pool water over time, particularly when the pool surface is new.

To start with, let me help you understand how baking soda works. Baking soda doesnt really clean your pool per se, what it does is to maintain the PH level of the water in your pool. Maintaining the PH level of the water means keeping your pool healthy. Baking soda scrub is used for cleaning pool tiles.
The Most Significant Advantage Of Both Baking Soda And Soda Ash
Soda ash has a very high PH level of 11.4, thus making it ideal for increasing the acidity of water, without having much effect on alkalinity.
However, baking soda which has a PH level of 8.3, and can also be used for adjusting the PH level of a pool, but will have more impact on the alkalinity level as we saw in the example mentioned above. Overall, baking soda is ideal for adjusting the alkalinity of a pool, than it is for improving the PH level-even though it can also be used to an extent. Whereas soda ash is best at adjusting the PH level without impacting much on the overall alkalinity of the pool, as only a small quantity of it would be required to raise the acidity level of a pool.

For example, splashing out water when swimming, or back washing the filter all remove water from your pool. Because of this, most pools do not suffer from increasing calcium levels over time.

What If My Calcium Hardness Is Too Low Isnt That Good
The only way to properly lower your calcium hardness level is to pump out a small amount of existing pool water and then refilling. This lowers the level because calcium rich water is pumped out of the pool and then replaced with tap water with very low calcium levels. Depending on where you live, most tap water in Australia has a calcium hardness of around 50ppm while tank and rainwater contain no calcium at all. So, following this drain and refill process will lower the calcium level without chemicals! Remember, if you live in a region that is known for hard calcium or mineral rich water, then have the calcium level of your tap water measured before starting this process. Importantly, you dont have to drain the entire pool to lower the calcium level. In many cases, replacing as little as 30-40 cms of water will bring your pool back into the normal calcium range.
How To Use Baking Soda To Spot
It is common to find some form of black or brown spots around the pool sometimes. These black and brown spots are a result of algae. However, there is no need for you to panic as I will show you how to spot-treat algae problems in a pool.
Step 1: Visit your grocery store, purchase any algae killing product, and proceed to add it into your pool by following the manufacturers instructions written on the labeling.
Step 2: Allow the algae to kill the product to circulate. Again, the time taken for this product to distribute is dependent on the size of your pool. However, it may take anywhere between 6 and 10 hours.
Step 3: After proper circulation of the algae killing product, sprinkle your baking soda, allowing it to have direct contact with the problem area.
Step 4: Now, scrub the affected area using a pool brush and watch how the algae disappear.

What Is The Correct Calcium Hardness Level
Heres your favorite answer: It depends. But what it depends on isnt that difficult.
If your pool has a vinyl or fiberglass liner, the calcium hardness level should be between 175 parts per million and 225 ppm.
If you have a concrete or plaster pool, keep the level between 200 ppm and 275 ppm.
See? Easy.
The key is keeping it balanced. You dont want your pool water to be too hard or too soft. Either way, youre in trouble.
Magnesium Will Show As Calcium In A Water Test

What Is The Ideal Calcium Hardness Level
At Orenda, we hear this question all the time. Here’s our answer to everyone: the ideal calcium hardness level is one that allows you to comfortably maintain LSI balance year-round.
The colder your climate, the more calcium hardness you should have in the water. We differ from many textbooks on this, and we do so based on our own learning of the LSI and in-the-field evidence. We suggest 300 ppm calcium hardness as a minimum, even if you’re in a hot climate. If you are in a climate where your pool can freeze, 400 ppm is the bare minimum for you…though it’s even better if you have 450-500 ppm. As a matter of fact, many commercial pools that use calcium hypochlorite chlorine routinely maintain calcium levels over 700 ppm without scale problems. Scale is not a function of calcium hardness alone, but of calcium carbonate saturation, as measured on the LSI.
Too much calcium can be a bad thing, and cause scale. Scale is annoying, but guess what? It doesn’t damage the pool. Scale is treatable the opposite problem of being under-saturated with calcium is not. Add calcium to get the water happily saturated with it, and etching/corrosion problems can be prevented.

High calcium content in your pool water will cause scales of minerals to build around the walls of the pool and equipment. It will also raise the pH level and cause the water to become cloudy. Lowering Calcium Hardness Level:
- Drain a portion of your pool water and replace it with softer water
- If your source water has high calcium check your local business directory for pool water delivery
- If replacing the water isnt an option, you can use a flocculant to attract the excess calcium and cause it to clump. After you use the flocculant, clean the walls and floors of your pool to remove the excess calcium and then backwash and clean your pump filter.
How Do I Remove Calcium Off My Pool Surface
If you spot calcium lumps or blotches in your pool, please dont alter your calcium hardness to try and fix this issue. Often, some people advise that reducing your calcium hardness will dissolve the calcium on the pool surface. This is not true. For example, maintaining the calcium level at either extreme will only make the calcium formation worse, not better. Therefore, the only way to treat calcium formation on a pool surface is to either use a calcium dissolving compound, or to drain and acid wash the pool.
