Maintaining a balanced swimming pool pH is a vital part of swimming pool maintenance. Not only does the proper pH protect your metal fittings and the walls of your pool, but the right pH range is also what makes swimming in the water pleasant instead of an itchy, burning trial. The correct range for a swimming pool is a pH of 7.4 to 7.8. If you are testing your pool and the pH registers as too low, try the techniques below to raise your pH.

1. Check Your Reagents

The first thing to check when your test indicates a low pH is whether your test reagents are still good. Reagents should be replaced every year and should never be mixed between test kits. If your kit is old, try getting a new one and testing again.

2. Add Soda Ash

If your pH is still low, try adding sodium carbonate, commonly called soda ash. Never add more than two lbs of soda ash per 10,000 gallons of water in your pool in any single treatment. Distribute the soda ash over the whole of the pool surface, starting in the deep end. Make sure that the pump is circulating to distribute the water and then wait an hour or so before testing again. If the pH is still too low after an hour, you can add more soda ash.

3. Check Your Total Alkalinity and Add Baking Soda

Although baking soda is effective and recommended by most for adjusting both PH and alkalinity levels in a pool, there are certain cases where other substances might work best. For example, a pool with the right amount of alkalinity level may possess a slightly lower PH level, in which case using baking soda may not be the ideal option. However, a compound like soda ash, also known as sodium carbonate, will work just fine for the scenario discussed above, in which case adding it in small quantity will only affect the PH, leaving your alkalinity level untouched.

E.g.: To adjust the PH level of a 10,000-gallon pool from 7.2 to 7.6 would require about 21 pounds of baking soda. However, a closer look would indicate that the amount of baking soda mentioned would only so more damage by increasing the level of alkalinity to 150 ppm, more than is required for a healthy and comfortable pool. With the use of soda ash however, it would only take 12.2 ounces of soda ash in 10,000 gallons of the pool to move the PH level of the pool from 7.2 to 7.6. What is more, is that this soda ash process will only add 10ppm or less to the total alkalinity of the pool.

The pH level of baking soda is 8.3, so it takes a lot of it to raise a pools overall pH level. The upside is that using baking soda will never make a pools pH level higher than 8.3 . Still, its better at adjusting the overall alkalinity of the water.

Safety Suggestions For Pool Chemicals

  • Keep pool chemicals away from other chemicals and locked up in a cool, dry place.
  • Do not store pool chemicals near other chemicals or flammables, including petrol, detergents or alcohol.
  • Always use chemicals strictly as instructed.
  • Never combine chemicals together for example, mixing different types of chlorine together can cause an explosion.
  • To avoid splashing the chemicals, always add the chemicals to water and not the other way around.

Baking Soda And Ph Levels

Adding baking soda will also raise your pool’s pH level some, but if your main goal is to raise the pH versus simply raising alkalinity, we recommend using soda ash in lieu of baking soda. Adding six ounces of soda ash to 10,000 gallons of water will raise the pH roughly 0.2, while adding the same amount of baking soda will have a negligible effect on your pH.

Note that soda ash does also raise alkalinity along with pH. That six ounces of soda ash will raise your alkalinity by about 5 ppm, so only use soda ash if you want to raise alkalinity and pH.

Take Final Water Test 48 Hours Later

After two days and two nights of keeping a close watch over the process, I took the reading in the morning. Total alkalinity in my example read 101 ppmânot bad at all. The pH was stable at 7.4. Remember that even if the natural aeration process is not complete, pH levels will not likely rise above the recommended levels because the alkalinity is within range and no pH increaser was used in this process.

Dilute Muriatic Acid As Directed And Add It To The Water

The pool in my example holds 20,000 gallons. To get my target value of 100 ppm, I needed to add about 2 quarts of muriatic acid.

I usually distribute the muriatic acid solution slowly around the pool while the pump is running high to increase the effect.

Some pool managers prefer adding the muriatic acid solution in one spot. Personally, I don’t like to do this because acid can damage pool parts when it is concentrated in one region.

The natural process of aeration begins after you add the muriatic acid and the levels of pH and TA have fallen and settled. During the aeration process, the levels of pH alone will rise gradually until it reaches the recommended level.

Test Your Chemistry Levels

Relationship Between pH and Total Alkalinity

If you think your pH levels are off, chances are youve already checked the pool chemistry to make sure. If not, go ahead and check them now to see exactly how far off the pH is.

Ideal pH levels are between 7.2 and 7.6, with 7.4 being optimum.

So if your pH measures anything below 7.2, you need to take the steps to raise it.

Test The Pool Water Again

Wait about an hour and then test your pH and alkalinity again. If theyre back in balance, then your job is done.

But if theyre still off, youll have to repeat the process, adding as much soda ash as you need in order to get it in normal range.

The water will be a little cloudy, but it should clear within a few hours or so.

If youre still having problems getting the pH balanced, you could have other issues that are throwing it off.

Test all the levels to see if there is another problem. Correct chlorine and calcium hardness levels if needed and test the pH again.

Also, make sure your pool is as clean as you can get it, since leaves and debris will cause it to be unbalanced.

Bonus: Factors That Lower Ph

For the most part, pool pH will rise over time, so there are not too many cases where a pool’s pH remains low, or continues to lower over time. This segment is really more for fiberglass and vinyl liner pools.

Some reasons for pool pH being reduced or staying low include using acidic chlorine like trichlor and getting a lot of rain. What Is Ph And What Should It Be

pH simply means the waters total acid-alkalinity balance.

Pool experts suggest that the ideal pH reading of pool or spa water needs to be between 7.2 7.8.
