For example, if you want to build a 60-inch by 30-inch by 30-inch billiard table, you need to measure a 90-inch length for each side and use an inch for each foot on the feet. There are some exceptions to this rule such as when designing an eight-foot long pool table or lining in concrete.

Tables For Other Games

Other types of billiard tables are used for specific games, such as Russian pyramid which uses a ’12 ft by 6 ft’ table , and Asian four ball which uses a pocketless 8 ft by 4 ft table. Games such as bagatelle often had more than six holes, including straight through the bed in the middle of the table, a feature still found in bar billiards and bumper pool.

What size pool table should I buy: The size of pool table that you should buy is determined by 3 factors: The size of your room, the size of the cue sticks that you would want to use and what size table you prefer. For example if your room is 13 X 16 that is enough room for a 7 table, with full cues, to have perfect playability. Putting an 8 table in the same room would require the use of 52 cues on some shots and if a 9 table was installed in the same space 48 cues would be needed on most shots. When space is limited, what it comes down to is: what is most important to you? Do you want the biggest table no matter what or is it more important to use full length cues? When space is not the issue, then it is just a matter of preference. Quick fact pertaining to resale value: 8 pool tables make up 75% of all tables in the residential market, 7 tables are the second most common and make up 24% of the market and finally the Big 8 and 9 tables make up the other 1%. Do Cue Sizes Change With Pool Table Sizes

Although cues are available in many different lengths, they do not change with the size of the table. The most common pool cue length, 58-inches, is used to play on tables from 7-feet all the way up to 9-feet. In fact, 58-inch cues are often used on snooker tables, which are even larger than pool tables .

Other common cue sizes are 61-inch, 52-inch, 48-inch, and 36-inch . Miniature pool tables, often made for children, come with small pool cues. Whats The Right Size Table To Buy

The biggest question people have when choosing their pool table is what size is actually needed to play a proper game of pool at home.

Once youve established how much space you have to work with, this will be your first indicator of the size you can get with 7, 8, and 9 feet being the most popular options.

Smaller pool tables are available in 6.5 and 7ft styles and theyre usually a more budget-friendly option.

Some might prefer a larger table if they can afford the space they take up and the higher cost, but theres really no right or wrong approach.

The right size table for you is the one that fits and the one that you can afford, so its a completely personal decision.

Although there are general recommendations for the minimum dimensions of the room, its always better to have more space than this.

As the pool is a very social game and most people install a table for the entertainment value, youll want to provide guests with enough space to hang out in your games room without anyone feeling like theyre crowded.

What Size Pool Table Is Right For You

Determining what size table is right for you isnt just about the size of the table. Its also about the length of cues youll be playing with. Standard pool cues are 57 or 58 long. But, they make cues as small as 48 for kids and as large as 61 for tall folks. Youll want to measure for the length of the longest cue youll use.

For most people, using a 58 cue length is just fine. It takes a little bit of math, but dont worry, its nothing too crazy. Heres a simple equation to help you figure out which size will work for you.

Tables playing surface length plus cue length times 2 = Total room length needed.

Tables playing surface width plus cue length times 2 = Total room width needed.

So, here it is in action:

  • For a 7-foot table and a 58 cue.
  • 78 + 58 * 2 = 194 room length
  • 39 + 58 * 2 = 155 room width
  • Total room dimensions for a 7-foot table and a standard cue: 16.2-feet x 13-feet.

Now lets take a look at a 9-foot table and a 57 cue:

  • For a 9-foot table and a 57 cue.
  • 100 + 57 * 2 = 214 room length
  • 50 + 57 * 2 = 164 room width
  • Total room dimensions for a 9-foot table and a standard cue: 17.8-feet x 13.7-feet.

Of course, these dimensions dont have to be exact down to the inches. I would round down on the 7-foot table and say youll be fine with a 16 x 13 room. For the 9-foot table, you can round up and say 18 x 14.

Other Pool Table Sizes

There are some other, less common pool table sizes that we should mention here. These are considered specialty pool tables. For the best playing experience, I would suggest getting a pool table thats between 7 and 9-feet. You can get a quality pool table for under $1000. But, in a pinch, the following sizes are always an option.

  • 6-foot tables Ideal space-saving tables and those with older kids who are interested in pool.
  • 4-foot tables Best for kids and those looking for a small, portable table for casual play.
  • Tabletop and miniature tables These are available in several different sizes, but theyre usually around 3-feet in length. Some are designed to be set on a table, others come with legs and a variety of other games like ping-pong, foosball, and air hockey.
