From Covered Porch To Comfortable Year

The project consisted of two main elements, creating a comfortable enclosed porch and adding a patio and amenities the whole family could enjoy. By reusing the existing infrastructure, we could save a significant amount that the homeowners reinvested elsewhere. Once framed the structure framed, we used PGT Eze Breeze windows to enclose the space, maximizing the natural light available. We installed a wood ceiling consisting of WP4 End Match Pine in a natural finish to warm up the space. For the floor, we again considered budget and installed durable Coretec Rigid Core Pro LVP in Edinburgh Oak.

Diy Cost Vs Professional Installation

The cost of labor to install a patio is around $5 to $15 per square foot. If the average patio is around 100 square feet, then youre looking at saving anywhere from $500 to $1,500 for the entire project in terms of labor costs.

With any other patio besides gravel, you should look into spending the extra $500 to $1,500. Patios routinely take between 30 to 50 hours to complete with professional installation.

Outdoor hot tub and fire pit.. some day!

Posted on Last updated:

Growing up we had a fire pit in the backyard. I loved it. We didnt use it every night, but we used it enough that I have many fond memories of roasting hot dogs and marshmallows in our backyard.

Fire pits, whether somewhere in the backyard or on the patio are super popular these days. Keep in mind that fire pits are just one type of fire feature you can put in your backyard.

Theyre relatively easy and inexpensive to make. At a minimum you need rocks and a shovel.

However, because everyone wants a fire pit in their yard, there are many options you can buy. You can buy both wood-burning and gas-fueled fire pits.

We recently purchased a propane-powered fire pit. Im not too fond of chopping wood I prefer flipping the on switch.

Dublin Deck & Patio With Hot Tub And Fire Pit For Outdoor Living

We met with this client in Dublin and they had an old paver patio which they wanted to upgrade and expand with a new design that included a beautiful deck with a low maintenance hot tub and a paver patio with a fire pit that was also low maintenance. And they wanted some extra room to entertain their friends and family.

Why A Hot Tub And Fire Pit

Westminster, MD Patio with Hot Tub & Fire Pit

While they seem different, a hot tub and fire pit share similar benefits when incorporated into your backyard design.

The two elements extend your living space into the outdoors, creating a cozy atmosphere for family and friends to enjoy. Entertain friends, reconnect with loved ones, or simply enjoy the crackle of the fire and whir of the jets as you relax and unwind.

For those who have considering an in-ground pool as part of a backyard remodel, a swim spa by Master Spas could be a better alternative. Part exercise pool and part hot tub, a swim spa by Master Spas would add the relaxation elements you want as part of the design. And, you would still have a place to splash and swim in the sun.

How Hot Does A Fire Pit Get

The heat a fire pit emanates is measured in BTUs . The higher the BTU, the more heat it gives off.

Propane fire pits give off 30,000 to 50,000 BTUs.

Wood-burning fire pits burn at 1,000 Fahrenheit and can give off up to 100,000 BTUs depending on the size of the pit or bowl and how much wood you burn.

Squared Rather Than Circled

Circular fire pits are quite trendy. When you think of a fire pit, this is the shape you most likely envision, but we want you to think outside the box. Large square and rectangular fire pits are awesome if you plan to entertain often.

Their square or rectangular shape allows more people to sit around the fire without having to be on top of one another. Its like a large outdoor table with a fire in the middle of it. Bricks are used to create large and stable walls for the pit.

Connected To A Bar Or Countertop

Some fire pits can be built into a bar or countertop. The fire pit will rest closer to the ground, and attached to it is a raised countertop. This countertop or bar platform can be used to serve food and drinks on or to play a few card games.

You can have two countertops with the fire pit in the middle. This will help keep everyone warm while eating or sitting at the countertop or bar.

A spacious hot tub by Master Spas is protected by the cedar roof. As you relax, take in views of the pond or listen to the crackle of the fire. Planters filled with annual arrangements add color, and black wicker benches offer a cozy spot to rest after soaking in the spa.

Spa Design With A Purpose

This oceanfront spa was built tall to create the illusion that the tub’s infinity edge blends seamlessly with the Pacific Ocean beyond. This type of small fire pit can be placed directly on top of any table and will work splendidly as a hand warmer and an insect repellent. To create an on-table fire pit, its essential to have all the right kinds of tools and supplies, so be sure to have the professionals help build on for you.

Doubles As A Coffee Table

When you build a fire pit on your deck or in close proximity to your door, its a great idea to create a fire pit that doubles as a coffee table.

This is the perfect idea for coffee or tea drinkers. Imagine waking up in the morning and walking right outside your door to find a nice cozy area to enjoy your morning beverage in.

Thats exactly what youll get when you build a brick fire pit with a painted wood slab to place on top of it. You can remove the top as you please depending on what you want to use it for.

Creating A Private Backyard Oasis For The Entire Family

One thing that bothered Benn and Laura about their backyard space was that even though it was a large yard, they felt that it lacked privacy from their neighbors. With the money saved by using the existing structural elements for the enclosed outdoor living space, we were able to build a patio large enough for furniture, a fire pit, and their new hot tub, all perfectly positioned and perfectly proportioned. To provide privacy, we installed pre-manufactured lattices from Wayfair as a privacy screen for the hot tub. We also created a delicate little trellis structure that supports a chair swing at the corner of the patio. Strategically positioned, these are literal and visual barriers and distractions to give them the privacy they sought.

Down A Pathway Under Lights

Sweet set up

To make the fire pit the focal point of your backyard, you can have a pathway built that attaches from your back door to your fire pit area. You should have lights installed along the pathway to help you navigate it at night.

You can also have a pergola built over the fire pit and add some fairy lights on there as well. Itll create an enchanting environment that you might not ever want to leave.

Winter Outdoor Living: A Hot Tub Deck Makes The Season Bright

In order to extend the outdoor living season, lots of homeowners add a heat source like a fire pit or fireplace to their deck.

Hot Tub Deck

But another very special amenity that really draws them outdoors even in winter is a portable hot tub. Installed in or against their decks, close to the back door, ensure theyll use the spas all year long.

We find this is true, even when theres a massive amount of snow, says our own Dave Stockwell. When we design and install the deck and spa, we ensure that the hot tub is properly supported within or against the structure of the deck.

An example of the many ways Deck and Patio ensures a safe and convenient hot tub installation is the hot tub deck we completed in Centerport, NY.

We set the hot tub on a custom platform positioned to make it easily accessible from anywhere on their new two-story deck, adds Dave. Its just steps out their back door, so even snowy and cold winters wont put them off from enjoying it something they especially wanted.

Some decks can be turned into a complete outdoor room. Along with a hot tub set into their multi-level deck, these homeowners added comfortable furniture, a fire pit, and a television.

Enjoy Your Outdoor Space Year-Round

You have misters on your patio to help mitigate the scorching summer heat, but hats and sweaters can only do so much once winter rolls around. Make the most of your investment in your outdoor space by completing the upgrade with a fire pit. A simple fire in the evenings means you can sit outside and drink a cup of tea or read a book without piling on the layers or worrying that your chattering teeth will drown out the much more appealing sounds of Mother Nature.

Let There Be Light!

Theres a very practical purpose to an outdoor fire pit. As well as providing heat, fire pits provide a source of light thats much more welcoming than garish fluorescents and more reliable than unpredictable solar lanterns. The right fire pit gives off a glow thats ideal for reading, chatting, or watching the kids play tag as dusk settles in.
