Sensitivity To Pool Water

Some natural stone pavers can be adversely affected if pool water lacks the right chemical balance. Splashes of such water onto the deck can lead to discolorations and, in worst-case scenarios, degradation and damage.

This is also why you most likely wont get a warranty from manufacturers if youre building the pavers deck around a salt pool.

How Is Stamped Concrete Installed

There are many steps involved in stamped concrete that must be executed carefully and quickly to achieve uniform results across the entire slab before the concrete sets. The pattern must be pre-planned and diagrammed, tools and labor ready to go. After the concrete is poured and allowed to set to the proper consistency, color hardeners and release agents are applied. The concrete is tested again before applying the stamp patterns. Finish work, detailing and cutting contraction joints finish the project.

Most often, stamping is done on newly poured concrete. However, existing concrete thats in good condition can be covered with a stamped overlay, which gives you the same look as conventional stamped concrete. Learn more about stamped concrete overlays.

Pavers Pool Deck: An Overview

Pavers are naturally beautiful to look at. They typically come in organic shapes and are then arranged in a formation that is irregular but pleasing to look at. In some cases, the pavers are cut into nice geometric shapes and then pieced together to fit like a picturesque puzzle.

Regardless of the option you choose, you should know that natural stone pavers always have a range of colors and textures for you to choose from. Some types of natural stone used are more durable than other options. Your choice will come down to what works for your pool area, and ultimately, your budget. Some of the pavers options you can use on a pool deck include:

  • Travertine: This is a warm-colored stone with a hue that tilts towards brown mostly.
  • Flagstone: This is a natural sedimentary rock with a natural flat shape and colors varying between gray and brown.
  • Concrete pavers: These come in a variety of colors and shapes, useful for making unusual and unique patterns. Molding the material into any shape is straightforward.

Pavers Vs Concrete: Which One Should You Choose

Pool Deck Pavers in Central Florida

To decide whether to go with pavers or concrete for your pool deck, you have to first analyze your specific needs.

If youre living in a home you intend to sell in the nearest future and dont want to part with too much money upfront in installation costs, a concrete pool deck is likely the right decision.

Your house will benefit from the immediate aesthetic uplift, and you wont have to worry about paying for the maintenance costs.

Sweep In Your Exterior Joint Sand

For joint sand, we use and recommend Surebond Polysweep Polymeric Joint Sand. This sand is designed specifically for pavers, natural stone, cast stone, cobblestone, concrete overlays, and pool decks.

Polysweep Polymeric Sand is a blend of native sands conforming to ASTM C-144 standard, and binders to allow the joints to expand and contract with the elements such as extreme heat, extreme cold, and freeze/thaw cycles.

To install, youll spread the sand evenly over your paver patio, using a shop broom to sweep in the sand. Spread it around, back and forth, until the sand has completely filled the joints. Once the joints are full, youll want to blow or sweep off the excess sand and hit your paver patio with water to activate the binders.

Belgards Top Tips For Pool Coping Installation

Whether youre working on a new install or replacing an existing pool deck with coping and concrete pavers, youll want to ensure that this key design element is perfectly installed. Here are our top tips to creating beautiful and long-lasting pool coping:

  • Take time and care when preparing the sub-base it lays the foundation for the whole system, so a strong base will set the entire install up for success. See our blog on installing a paver installation base.
  • Make sure the coping stones are level-set with mortar dont pitch the coping, since the pool deck itself will be pitched.
  • Ensure that coping pavers have a consistent 1-inch overhang.
  • Use a different color to mortar the joints in a complementary color to create contrast between the pavers.
  • If the pool has an auto-cover with a track, do not mortar the track itself instead, use a construction adhesive on the track portion, and mortar on the back side of the track.
  • Finish your pool deck by utilizing quality polymeric sand to lock in your pavers. Install foam expansion between coping and pavers to protect the bond seam.

Pool Deck Overlays Vs Pavers A Breakdown

Although the swimming pool is the highlight of a pool, the concrete pool deck also plays a huge role both in the aesthetics and function of the entire space. An old or ugly deck will lessen enjoyment and comfort and that shouldnt be the case. It should be in good form for lounging, walking barefoot, and other outdoor activities. When you do decide to enhance or repair, make sure you choose the right material. Two of the most popular options is a concrete resurfacing overlay or pavers. If you are torn, here are the pros and cons of each one:

Laying Thin Pavers Over Concrete Pool Decks

Thin pavers may seem a cost effective way of giving your pool deck a radical makeover, there are however important factors to consider and certain rules that must be observed if you want to maintain a healthy outdoor paved living space.

If you are thinking of laying thin pavers over an existing concrete deck in Florida then the most important aspect to consider is water drainage. Surface water drainage on paver pool decks is usually handled via a grated channel which runs around the perimeter and sometimes through sections of the pool deck. These channels transport excess surface rainwater to the outside edge of the pool deck where the rainwater can drain into the surrounding soil.

This handles excess surface water but what about the water that goes through the joints between the pavers what happens to that?. The old concrete deck will not allow water to drain through it like a sand base so unless there is another strategy to manage rain water it will simply collect under the pavers and cause problems with mold and algae.

Paver Grout offers a unique solution to managing this problem, by creating a water impermeable deck, the surface water is prevented from getting under the pavers and is transported via the grade or slope of the deck to the nearest drainage channel.

What Are The Downsides To A Pool Deck Made Of Pavers

Concrete Pool Deck Ideas: Pool Patios, Coping, Paving Ideas Pictures ...

Other than their higher price tag, pavers are more prone to mold and mildew because water can seep into the joints between the pavers. Pavers can also settle over time, which can create trip hazards. And, if pavers are not installed properly, they can shift and become uneven, allowing weeds to colonize and grow between the pavers.

How To Lay Travertine Pool Deck Pavers

Travertine and natural stone pavers are a popular choice for pool decks in Florida. They are usually loose laid on sand and butted together with little or no space left for grout, these small cracks and openings create a perfect place for dirt to collect and for weeds to start growing.

Paver Grout recommend that you use their specialist Travertine tile spacer to allow for a proper joint to be formed.

Laying Travertine is similar to laying pavers once the base sand is compacted the copings can be bonded in place with a thin set adhesive, the pavers can then be laid loose on the sand base and tapped down to bed them in.

Using the Paver Grout spacer we can create a low maintenance weed free surface that will stay looking clean.

Travertine pool decks should be with a high quality stone sealer such as DuPont’s Enhancer Pro to protect the surface and to prevent it from being damaged.

Travertine pavers come in a variety of grades and sizes, it is worth looking at several samples before you decide which color to order.

Truth #: Landscapers Recommend Pavers Because They Are Not Experts With Pool Decks

The likelihood that your landscaper will recommend pavers for your pool deck might simply be a function of their having no experience updating existing concrete. A concrete deck is your best choice for a smooth surface that will maintain its original character far longer than pavers ever will, especially around in-ground swimming pools. Just ask your pool store or pool builder:

Concrete slabs can bridge minor ground movements underneath the deck much better than pavers. Concrete is still the number one choice for pool decks of new swimming pool installations. If your landscaper suggests pavers beside your pool, they may be suggesting an unsuitable option solely based on their inability to suggest anything else. Unfortunately, you will have to pay the price of high maintenance later.

What Makes Pavers A Smart Option

Paver over a concrete pool deck

A paver pool deck is made of individual pavers, which are usually made of brick, stone, or concrete. Pavers are available in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes, so you can create a unique look for your pool deck. Pavers are also more slip-resistant and can be installed with a drainage system to prevent pooling water.

Paver pool decks are more expensive than concrete pool decks, but they are also more durable and require less maintenance. Pavers can last for decades with the proper care, while concrete may start to show signs of wear after 10 years. Pavers are also easier to repair than concrete because individual pavers can be replaced if they become damaged.
