This is a big move for one of Twitch’s most popular niches, and as such, it comes with some interesting pros and cons. For viewers that enjoy hot tub streams, finding them is much easier than before. Comparatively, viewers that don’t want to watch these types of streams will no longer see them scattered throughout the Just Chatting category that they previously lived in.

What could be a potential issue, however, is the impact on advertising for hot tub streams. Companies can choose to exclude certain Twitch categories from their advertising campaigns, and now that there’s a dedicated area for hot tub streams, it just got a lot easier for brands to exclude these creators if they wish. That’s not to say this is something all advertisers will do, but the option is now there. If enough advertisers start omitting Pools, Hot Tubs, and Beaches from their campaigns, that could force some hot tub streamers to create other content instead.

As for whether or not this was the right move, that remains to be seen. Twitch says that the hot tubs category “is not intended to be our long-term solution” for improving advertising targeting to recommending streams to users, suggesting that bigger changes could be coming down the road. Those additional changes could potentially be even worse for the existence of hot tub streams on Twitch, meaning the drama over this situation is likely far from over.

Twitch Launches New Pools Hot Tubs And Beaches Category

Twitch has launched a new Pools, Hot Tubs, and Beaches category in response to “community and advertiser feedback”.

The announcement came after a controversial week for Twitch and its “hot tub meta”, with some streamers complaining that advertising had been suspended from their channels without warning or explanation.

Twitch said it had done this “at the advertisers’ request”. “We recently suspended advertising on some channels that were flagged by the majority of our advertiser base and failed to notify them,” Twitch said in a blog post.

“Our creators rely on us, and we should have alerted affected streamers to this change before it happened – it was a mistake not to do so. We’re working with individual creators to address their specific situations and restore ads where appropriate.”

One common complaint from streamers is confusion around Twitch’s guidelines about sexually suggestive content. Twitch tried to clear this up, saying: “being found to be sexy by others is not against our rules, and Twitch will not take enforcement action against women, or anyone on our service, for their perceived attractiveness.”

So, what are the rules? Streamers “may appear in swimwear in contextually appropriate situations , and we allow creative expression like body writing and body painting, provided the streamer has appropriate coverage as outlined by our attire policy”, Twitch said.

“Nudity or sexually explicit content are not allowed on Twitch.”

Who Has A Problem With Hot Tub Streamers

The hate for hot tub streamers comes from all directions. As mentioned earlier, other Twitch hosts have a problem due to concerns that companies may not want to spend their ad revenue on parts of the platform that promote women in bikinis.

Other female streamers have also voiced concerns about getting unwanted social pressure from their viewers to do a hot tub stream.

Félix “xQc” Lengyel, one of the most popular streamers on Twitch, tweeted some harsh words about the hot tub meta last month.

“Im gonna be honest, this hot tub meta is by far the most pathetic thing we’ve seen on Twitch in forever,” he tweeted. “What a sad reality. Please get this trash off the frontpage.”

Twitch Addresses Suspension Of Advertising Controversy

Twitch also addressed the backlash from earlier this week in the blog. They explained that Friday’s move will help brands have more control over their advertising dollars.

“On Twitch, brands get to decide where and when their ads appear,” they explained. “Today, they can target or avoid specific categories of content and flag channels that dont meet their standards. This means that Twitch, in rare cases, will suspend advertising on a channel at the advertisers request. We absolutely do not permit brands to use protected characteristics as a filter for advertising targeting or blocking.”

The company also apologized for its move to suspend ads on a number of channels earlier this week without notifying the creators. Most notably, Amouranth announced on Tuesday that she has her advertising suspended indefinitely, a move that caused a huge uproar in the Twitch community.

“We recently suspended advertising on some channels that were flagged by the majority of our advertiser base and failed to notify them,” Twitch wrote. “Our creators rely on us, and we should have alerted affected streamers to this change before it happenedit was a mistake not to do so. Why Did Twitch Make A Hot Tub Category

As with many changes in tech, it comes down to money.

In recent months, there was a growing awareness of the increasing number of hot tub streams. This was referred to in the community as the “hot tub meta,” the idea being that an attractive woman can put on a bikini, sit in an inflatable hot tub and proceed to get more viewers and donations.

The community’s problem with hot tub meta is related to advertising. Until last week, most hot tub streams would have been in the Just Chatting category. Some non-hot tub streamers were concerned that brands might pull their ad dollars from Just Chatting to avoid being associated with livestreams of scantily clad women. This could impact the revenues of all hosts in that category.

Twitch was aware of the concern, hence its decision to create a separate category.

“Today brands can target or avoid specific categories of content and flag channels that don’t meet their standards,” Twitch said Friday. “We think it’s important that viewers have choice in determining the type of content that is suggested to them, and brands have the right to determine where their ads appear on the service.”
