How Long Should I Run My Pool Filter Each Day

How to use your Swimming Pool Sand Filter | In-Depth Operational Guide

How does a swimming pool filter work? Now that you know the answer, the next question to ask is, How long should I run my pool filter each day?

If your pool is going to stay clean, all of the water needs to pass through the filter at least once per day. So, the amount of time you run your filter will vary depending on your pool size. Most swimming pool experts recommend around eight hours a day.

You can refine this number by researching how many gallons per hour your particular filter can process. Use this number and the volume of your pool to determine the exact amount of time you should run the filter. Larger pools may need longer than eight hours, while small pools may need less.

Criteria You Should Consider When Looking For Sand Filters

When youre considering a sand filter, you need to consider the size of your pool to make sure you have enough volume of sand to handle the amount of water youll be putting through it. If you dont know how many gallons of water are in your pool, use our swimming pool volume calculator. The manufacturers recommendations and the total surface area of the sand will help you decide which size is right for your specific application.

Sand filters are probably the most common filter type on the market for swimming pools. Since they are very common, you should be able to get parts without too much difficulty when needed. But, if youre going to be servicing the filter yourself, be prepared for some hard work any time you need to change the sand.

Filter Glass As An Effective Filter Medium In The Pool Sand Filter

The filter glass is considered an environmentally friendly filter medium for water treatment in your pool.

It is made from the excess white and green glass production in the glass industry and is 100% recyclable.

The unique manufacturing technology enables excellent filtration and prevents the filter medium from clumping quickly.

In addition to efficient filtration, the formation of bacteria is also slowed down, as no bacteria collect on the smooth surface of the glass.

Another advantage of the filter glass is that the system does not have to be backwashed often, and you save electricity costs.

The only question that remains to be clarified before buying is which grain size of the filter glass is the right one for your pool filter.

Grain size of 0.3 to 1.00 mm is recommended for filter glass. This grain size enables a filter fineness of 5 µ and is therefore 30% more efficient than conventional sand.

And when do you have to change the filter material in the sand filter system?

The filter glass in the pool filter system is changed every 3 to 4 years, depending on the load.

I need to mention: Most pool shops try to sell filter glass as a future-oriented alternative to conventional filter sand.

But the truth is, if there is a blockage with fine particles, strong oxidizing agents such as active oxygen are necessary to remove the impurities backwashing is sufficient for sand.

What To Do With Old Pool Filter Sand

Hayward Pro Series S210T93S 21 Inch Top

Old pool filter sand is actually a bit dangerous. Not only is it filled with the impurities it filtered out of your pool water, but it is potentially quite dangerous to inhale. So, dont be tempted to use it for toys or litter boxes. It is also too fine to be used in concrete mixes.

But it can be stored safely in buckets and used for winter traction in icy conditions. Or, it is actually just about the right size and consistency for creating a base layer for a paving stone patio or walkway. It can also be used to fill holes in your lawn before adding topsoil. Some people just bury it to be safe.

However, the main expense when it comes to your sand filter will be purchasing and setting up the unit itself.

How to set up a Sand Filter System to Above ground pool [Intex Krystal Clear]

All three types of swimming pool filters have their own unique pros and cons, and theres no one-size-fits-all filter. If youre on a budget, you might want to choose a sand filter, which does a good job of removing dirt and debris at a wallet-friendly price. If you want a solid balance of price and performance , a cartridge filter might be the right fit for you. And if you want top-of-the-line filtration capabilities and you dont mind spending a little extra, a DE filter is a great choice.

De Earth As Filter Material In Swimming Pools

The filtration with DE-earth takes place in a DE-filter this is earth, which consists of microscopic skeletons of organisms. .

Filtration down to 5 µ is possible with DE soil. While this is handy for water filtration, using DE soil is inherently tricky.

Backwashing can be problematic as the filter medium often becomes sticky in combination with grease. This means that the filter system has to be opened and cleaned by hand in the worst case.

Furthermore, in practice, a loss of the filter medium is to be expected during backwashing the manufacturers information here fluctuates from 10 to 90%.

The loss of the filter medium in the pool is not unimportant when you consider that lost filter material has to be refilled, which results in extra effort and costs.

Sand Filter Or Cartridge Filter: Which Is Better

A cartridge filter uses pleated fabric wrapped around a cylindrical core to filter pool water and catch debris as it goes through the system. Cartridge filters are used on pools and spas, are compact in size, and don’t need to be backwashed. They are also easy to maintain as they only need to be rinsed with a hose about every four to six weeks, depending on the size. The filter might need to be soaked in a filter cleaning solution on occasion, especially if you’ve been having trouble with algae.

In our personal opinion, cartridge filters are more effective at removing impurities and keeping the pool water clear than sand filters. Cartridge filters are also easy to maintain, catch smaller particles than sand filters, reduce the load on the pool pump, and don’t require any backwashing. As a bonus, you won’t need to handle potentially dangerous materials .

What Is A Sand Filter

24

A sand filter is essentially a tank full of sand that’s connected to your pool’s filtration network. As pool water passes through the sand tank, the sand catches debris and particles and prevents them from returning to the pool. This results in cleaner, clearer water.

Most sand filters use #20 sand or mesh crystal silica #20, but they may also use glass or zeolite. The sand filter housing is typically made from stainless steel, fiberglass, or plastic and is durable enough to withstand the high pressure required to run the filtration system.

Sand Filters Vs De Filters

Sand filters have a big advantage over DE filters, though they do operate on similar principles. You do not have to add sand to your filter after a backwash, as it all remains in the tank. When backwashing a DE filter, you actually rinse away the DE, along with the dirt caught in it. That means each time you backwash, you also have to add a new DE to the system.

Working with DE isnt extremely dangerous. But, some people are very sensitive to exposure, and you might want to consider wearing gloves and safety goggles when handling it. Its also not a good idea to inhale DE if you can avoid it, as the dust isnt healthy for your lungs and can be an irritant or worse. You can always wear a mask to minimize any health risks.

But, since youll be working with DE quite often, you are probably going to get tired of using all the safety gear and resort to just holding your breath and squinting a bit to keep it out of your eyes.

Safety concerns aside, it is quite easy to make a mess with DE. If you add it to the skimmers mouth too quickly, some will fall to the bottom of your pool, and youll need to vacuum it out. And, even if you are pretty careful, youll probably end up spilling some on your deck.

One way to minimize spills is to buy small, single-use bags of DE instead of a big one that might last a whole season or longer. But, the smaller bags are a little bit more expensive.

How Do I Change The Sand In My Pool Filter

In order to change the sand in a pool filter, first backwash the pool filter and then remove the drain plug to let the water drain. Then remove your filter cover and multiport valve. Next we recommend you cover your standpipe with a plastic bag or duct tape to prevent any sand from falling down it as you remove the sand. Removing the sand is next, and we recommend removing the old sand with a Shop Vac if you have, and if not, use a cap or gently use a small garden shovel.

It is important to be careful not to damage the fingers located at the bottom of your filter when doing this. After the sand is removed, rinse the inside of the tank and use a sponge to clean the inside of the filter. Reapply the drain plug and fill the tank about halfway with water, once this is done, gently add the new pool filter sand, spreading it evenly around.

Remove the tape or bag you used to cover the standpipe, then check the lids O-Ring and replace it if needed. Next, re-install the multiport valve and filter cover, along with all of the screws and unions. Backwash your filter for a few minutes, and then switch it from backwash to rinse. Set it to rinse for a couple of minutes and finally set your multiport valve to filter.

How Does It Work

How To: Install a Top Mount Pool Sand Filter

Like cartridge filtration, a sand pool filtration system is easy to install in a plant room near the pool or in the basement of your home.

The pump circulates the water through the pools entire sand filtration system. The water passes through the filter and then a mixture of sand and gravel traps any impurities before the water returns to the pool. This enables a filtration fineness of 30 to 40 microns .

The sand filter system is one of the most widely used filtration solutions. Its easy to operate and efficient.
