Citystars Sharm El Sheik

Located in an Egyptian resort town, the crystalline lagoon at Citystars Sharm el Sheik currently holds the Guinness World Record for the largest man-made body of water with an official measurement of 23.9 acres. Technically, its the largest crystalline lagoon, since it mimics a natural body of water, but maybe thats even more impressive.

Amazingly, the pool was constructed in the middle of the Sinai desert and is just three miles from the Egyptian coast. If building a massive pool so close to the actual sea seems excessive, that may be the least extravagant aspect of the Citystars lagoon as it also cost $5.5 million to be built and takes several weeks to be filled with salt water.

This is a weird story, but well worth the inclusion: For many years the Orthlieb Pool of Casablanca, Morocco was thought to be the biggest pool in the world. According to the reports, it measures 1,574 feet long and 246 feet wide, with an amazing area coverage of 8.9 acres. Sounds pretty impressive, right? Theres only one problem theres little sign that the Orthlieb ever existed, and less sign that its still there today.

# The Biggest Pool In The World

The largest swimming pool in the world is located in Chile, specifically in Algarrobo.

This impressive pool spans a kilometer in length and has an extension of eight hectares, or 77,000 square meters. To give an idea of the length, we can compare it to 20 Olympic facilities put in a row.

This Guinness World Record swimming pool can hold two and a half million liters of water, which is pumped, filtered and purified straight from the Pacific Ocean, from which it is separated only by a strip of white sand.

How is such a large tank cleaned? Maintenance is quite difficult, though possible thanks to a technology patented by Chilean engineer Fernando Fischman, which allows the purification of unlimited amounts of water.

The Orthlieb Pool Of Casablanca Morocco 89 Acres

It sounds impressive, but even more impressive than that is that theres little sign of its existence today.

With the only reports remaining about it being several decades old and no photos to prove its existence, this sounds more like a myth than reality. The only thing that might prove the pool existed are some ancient postcards.

Why Build A Pool Beside The Ocean

In 1997, Fernando Fischmann, Chairman and Founder, decided to develop a real estate tourism project: San Alfonso del Mar, in Algarroboa small town on Chiles central coast. The waters of the Chilean coast are cold, inhospitable and dangerous , so it was difficult to imagine how a project could be successful and unique from ones that already existed.

To solve this dilemma, Mr. Fischmann dreamed of creating a large lagoon with crystal clear waters that would provide visitors the chance to swim and enjoy water sports in a safe, clean environment and warm waters. He travelled the world in search of the technology to turn his dream into reality. However, the technology did not exist. The only available option was to construct a very large conventional swimming pool, but this was neither technically nor economically feasible given its high costs.

His solution would result in a worldwide patent and a new company called Crystal Lagoons Technology.
