How Do You Measure Durability

Mil vs Gauge What is the deal with liner thickness

No industry standard exists for precisely measuring the strength of pool liners, but the thickness can give you a sense of durability.

Very thick liners can be cumbersome to install and tougher to get wrinkles out of. Poor fit or installation mistakes can affect your vinyl as well, so the thickest liner around may be only as good as its installation.

Two units of measure refer to the thickness of above ground pool liners : mil and gauge.

The Rate Of Failure From Manufacturers Defects Are The Same With Standard And Heavy Gauge

Just about the only thing that is truly covered with these liners under the warranty is if there is a seam separation. Seam separations are fairly rare, but they do happen. I average about one seam separation in every two hundred liners I install.

Seam separations suck, but getting a heavier liner will not decrease your odds of getting one. These are just defects that dont care how much the liner weighs.

And Then Theres Coving

The bottom of an inground pool doesnt have sharp corners where the floor and walls meet. Instead, its a gentle slope. To create this same effect in an above ground pool, youll use coving. Its usually made of foam, and attaches to the pool wall.

The liner pad can go under or over the coving, and then the pool liner sits on top of both. You dont have to use coving in your pool, but it can help protect your liner from stretching, wrinkles, and any damage that could be caused by the liner being wedged into a tight corner.

What Are They Made Of

Swimming pool liners are made of vinyl sheets that are welded together to fit the shape of your facility, depending on its size. You can access these liners when you remove the rails and caps of your swimming pool. These caps might come in multiple parts and be attached using multiple screws it will depend on the manufacturer.

Water Care Is Liner Care

16

You take care of the things you care about. You wouldnt put grandmas china in the dishwasherat least, not after what happened last time. Your pool liner may not be as delicate as that china, but it still requires maintenance to prevent damage and extend its life.

Using too many harsh chemicals in your pool or letting it go to swamp at the end of each season may severely affect the integrity and longevity of your liner.

Keep your pool chemistry balanced for the health of the liner, your pool, and everyone who swims in it.

No one wants to hang out in swamp water. Except, of course, swamp monsters. But theyre not invited to your pool. To keep it clean, clear, and monster free, follow the correct steps to winterize your above ground pool every year.

Best Times Of The Year To Replace Pool Liner

Pool contractors need between two and six weeks to make a simple liner and between five and eight weeks for an extremely difficult job, such as converting a concrete pool into a liner pool.Choosing a time of year when business for pool companies is traditionally slower can save you money. Plus, the company will have more time and energy to devote to your project. Consider these three best times for replacing your pool liner:

1. Late Winter

Pool contractors have time on their hands before mid to late March when pool installation season ramps up. The opportunity to take advantage of this pre-season time makes this a good time to order your pool liner.

2. Mid-Summer

Mid-summer, July and August, is another slow time for pool companies. Most pool liners are already installed and up and running.

3. Post-Season

The third, but in my book, the best time to replace your swimming pool’s liner is after the season is over and most pools are ready to be winterized. September – November in most areas. Replacing your pool liner in the fall will also help you avoid next season’s price increases. It is also drier and less likely to have ground water issues. Look for blog on ‘Ground water issues’.Pool liners, though durable, need to be replaced every 13 – 15 years, depending on wear and weather conditions. Replacing pool liners keeps your pool looking fresh and new and helps to prevent costly repairs.

Whats Under The Above Ground Pool Liner

Whoa, there! Before you just throw a new liner in the pool and call it good, make sure you also get a hiqh-quality liner pad. Its a protective layer that goes between the ground and the pool liner. It helps prevent punctures and lumps youd get if the liner were just sitting on bare ground.

Liner pads are made from two materials.

Got A Leak Good Luck With That

How thick should a pool liner be?

Dont get us wrong. Leaks in above ground pool liners are super easy to fix, and its always good to know how to patch a pool liner. Just Get a repair kit and youll be swimming again before you can say Marco Polo. The challenge is finding the leak.

Unless its a huge, obvious gash pouring water into your yard, finding a leak in an above ground pool is notoriously difficult. If you want to take a shot at finding the pool leak, you can try the bucket test. But finding a tiny leak in an above ground pool is so challenging, it may take you less time to get a new liner and install it.

Where Mil Is Really Used

The measurement called mil is really 1/1000th of an inch. This unit is used mostly in machinist manufacturing and is not the same as millimeter or mm for short.

Mils are also used to determine the thickness of plastic sheeting like Visqueen or trash bags. The higher the mils, the thicker the plastic product.

Out of the two, mil is closer to a real description of thickness for an above-ground pool liner than gauge.

The Liner Is The Most Important Part Of An Above Ground Pool

Liner thickness is an important fact to understand. It may seem like a small difference, but it’s a discrepancy that we want Shelly -and all our other customers- to be aware of because the liner is the most important part of an above ground pool. It’s common practice in the pool industry to refer to above-ground liners with reference to their gauge, and because of that we would never advertise or sell one as 25 mil. We only deal with top quality liner manufacturers that carefully shape each liner with a minimum of stretch to meet National Spa and Pool Institute standards. We’re not aware of any manufacturers that make or sell a true 25 mil thick liner for above-ground pools. In fact, most dealers, whether online or in-store, get their liners from the same limited number of manufacturers. This is why most dealers show similar liner patterns every year. Typically the only difference is going to be in price. With that in mind, please be cautious of anyone that represents an above ground liner as a true 25 mil thick.

Regardless the actual thickness, all our liners are backed by top-notch warranties, and you can rest assured that Family Pool Fun stands behind its products. In this instance, the 25 gauge pool liner Shelly purchased came with our standard 25-year warranty, and we encouraged her to contact us if she ever experiences any problems with it during that time. We certainly want any customer to get in touch if there is an issue with a liner purchased from us.

    Faq On Above Ground Liners

    Q: What is virgin vinyl?

A: Although thickness matters when buying a pool liner, you should only buy liners made of virgin vinyl meaning without recycled material. Virgin vinyl means that your product is made of 100% pure or new vinyl. Virgin vinyl expands and contracts evenly, and thus fits well.

Q: Why do different brand produce liners of similar patterns yet with different names?

A: This is often caused by the suppliers who sell these patterns to different brands. The brands can later name these patterns accordingly. They are purchasing vinyl from one supplier. However, note that just because the patterns are similar it doesnt mean that the liners are of equal thickness.

    Q: What is gauge?

A: It is used as a true measurement in some industries, but shouldnt be used as Mil or be used to describe a liner. Pool manufacturers dont use 20, 25, or 30 gauge to describe the thickness of a liner it is used by salespeople and stores. Therefore, it is a measure that is often used but you shouldnt use it to determine the thickness of your liner.

    Understanding Vinyl Pool Liner Thickness

When talking about the mil or guage of vinyl pool liners, you should first get a decent understanding of what these terms actually mean. The most common term for vinyl, mil is a unit of measurement equal to one thousandth of an inch. Therefore, a 20 mil liner thickness is equal to 20 thousandths of an inch. The term gauge , is a bit more of a moving target. See, multiple industries measure items such as wire, shotgun barrels, sheet metal, photographic film and hypodermic needles by their gauge. This can be very confusing as in a case like shotgun barrels where the smaller the gauge, the larger the barrel. This is not the case when it comes to vinyl pool liners where the higher the gauge, the thicker the material.

When shopping for pool liners, it is very important that you are aware that gauge is not equal to mil. Some manufactures or retailers like to offer their liners in terms of gauges because they sound thicker than a true mil. To be technical, a 30 mil liner is equivalent to 0.0300 inches. A 30 gauge liner is equivalent to 0.0260 inches . Therefore, if you see a liner advertised at 35 gauge, it is truly a 30 mil liner. To avoid this confusion, always make sure and purchase from a company that advertises in mil, versus gauge.

To give some additional perspective, here is the mil of some everyday items:
