Intex 28633eg Krystal Clear Cartridge Filter Pump
If youre an Intex owner looking for a cartridge filter, this is for you. Unlike other options, this filter uses disposable cartridges. Maintenance is as convenient as turning the handy flush valve and popping in a new cartridge.
At the end of the season, dismantle and store it with your pool. If your weather is mild, its double-walled construction means you can just leave it up with no worries.

Pentair 188592 Quad Cartridge Style De Pool Filter
Designed with easily removable cartridges, the Pentair Quad makes maintenance a little easier on you. It has four, large-capacity cartridges that provide loads of surface area so your pump uses less energy to get the water just as clean as other D.E. filters.
The increased surface area also means it takes longer to clog, so you can clean it less often. Its all housed inside a durable, fiberglass-reinforced polypropylene tank.
Sizes Of Residential Pool Filters
Filters are commonly sized by the square footage of surface area. It makes sense: The more square feet of filter media you have, the better the filter performance will be. But it gets tricky when you try to compare the three different types of pool filters to each other.
Thats because they all trap dirt and debris in different ways theyre like apples and oranges!
Dont let this confuse you, though. Within each filter type, there are typically four or five sizes.
Of these sizes, the smallest are suitable for aboveground pools, the mid-range ones can be used for small pools around 15,000 gallons, and the big filters work best for pools above 25,000 gallons.
To add to the confusion are the manufacturers listed turnover rates for their pool filters. These are usually listed on product information pages, and they show the maximum flow rates for the filters.
This snippet below, from our Hayward Star-Clear filter page, seems to suggest that a 25-square-foot filter can take care of a 12,000-gallon pool, and I can tell you that is not the case. Not even close.
For sand filters on in-ground pools, I like to use a 30-inch tank diameter, which has a 4.9 sq. ft. filter surface area and holds 600 pounds of sand. For small pools , I might advise the next size down if the budget is tight. But never go smaller than this for an in-ground pool.

Filter Material In The Pool
Its not uncommon to see some filter material in the pool after backwashing, regardless of what kind of filter you have. But if you start noticing it when you havent just backwashed, you may have a problem.
The first thing to check is the bolts holding the filter in place. If theyre loose, it could allow particles to escape into the pool. If theyre not, look for other causes.
If you have a sand filter, the filter lateral or standpipe may be broken. If it is, youll need to replace it.
If you have a D.E. filter, there could be tear in the fabric of the grid, or even a crack in the grid manifold. Again, if this is the problem, youll need to replace the manifold.
Finding The Right Fit
A cartridge filter performs the essential function of cleaning the water in your pool. In order to do this, the dirty water must pass through the pleated fabric so the debris is removed from the water. If you do not filter your pool water, it won’t be long until your water turns green.
The cartridges in a cartridge filter system are tube-shaped, and they stand upright in your filter tank. Depending on your system, you may have one or several filters inside that tank. The dirty water fills up the tank and flows through the cartridges to the center of the tube. The filtered water exits the bottom of the tube and is pumped back into the pool.
When replacing a cartridge, its essential to get one that is the exact same physical size. This includes height, outer diameter, and inner diameter. If the cartridge is too large, it simply won’t fit. If the cartridge is too small, unfiltered water may be slipping by, which means your pool will shortly turn green. Additionally, it is important to remember that a cartridge is basically stiff polyester fabric and plastic, so the pressures exerted on a cartridge that doesn’t fit properly could easily crush or crack that cartridge, making it useless.
When purchasing a replacement cartridge that isn’t an OEM cartridge, be sure to double-check the measurements. If they aren’t exactly the same as the cartridge you are replacing, keep looking.

Cartridge Pool Filters & Filter Systems
Cartridge pool filters are the most convenient option for maintaining great water quality. There is very little maintenance to be done, and most importantly, no backwashing. The cartridges do require periodic cleaning and will lose effectiveness over time. We have replacement pool cartridge filters for sale, just click the shop parts link on your make and model to ensure you are ordering the correct ones. The cartridges should be replaced every 3-5 years or whenever your filter pressure gauge increases by more than 8-10 PSI in a 6 month period. Depending on where you live in Canada, a cartridge filter system works best for saltwater pools in established residential areas, as these cannot be drained into the sewer system. If there is a lot of debris or pollen in the air then a sand filter is more practical. If you have a spa or an above ground pool, then a cartridge filter will be the cheapest and most effective choice for optimal water quality. We offer some of the best prices on swimming pool cartridge filters, some models can be shipped within Canada and we offer curbside pickup during regular business hours.

How To Select The Best Pool Filter
Pool filters are as important to your pool as your kidneys are to your own body. We know that sounds kind of gross, but its true. Though chlorine and other sanitizers work to kill bacteria and other contaminants, the filter is what actually removes them from the water. Without it, your pool water would grow cloudy and fill with debris. Not exactly fun for swimming.
So how do you choose the best one? Its not about which one is the least expensive, though cost is certainly a factor. You want a filter that will trap contaminants, be easy to clean and maintain, and last more than just a few seasons. In order to make the best selection for your pool, first get a handle on your options.
Pump Size To Filter Size
With a big pool filter, theres no worry about the pump being too large for the filter. Also, dont worry if your pump seems undersized for a larger pool filter this is rarely the case. When the pump is too large, however, it can mean all sorts of trouble. Dirt can be pushed through the filter, internals can become crushed or cracked, and high pressure makes for a slow, inefficient and potentially hazardous situation.

Best For Above Ground Pools: Carvin Laser 225
Use a pool filter with sand to filter your way to cleaner, clearer water in your above ground pool. The Carvin Laser Sand Filter relies on naturally abrasive sand as a filter media to keep your pool sparkling. The system draws water evenly across the surface of the deep bed of sand in the filter tank, allowing for higher flow rates, better filtering, and more efficient backwashing. The pump is also equipped with a 7-way valve that can easily be adjusted for functions like filtration, backwashing, rinsing, draining, winterizing, and more.
Like all sand pool filters, it will require occasional backwashing and the sand will need to be replaced about every 5 years. However, this above ground pool filter can keep up with pools up to 21,000 gallons in size.
Comparing Swimming Pool Filters
Does the type of swimming pool filter really matter? Are the differences between pool filters even noticable? How do they impact water quality? Does filter type have any affect on indoor air quality? At the end of the day, filters are filters that filter…right? Let’s discuss.
Obviously, filtration impacts water quality, and perhaps that translates to air quality too. One thing we do know is more contaminants trapped in the filter means less contaminants circulating.

Cartridge Filters: Pros & Cons
These filters look a lot like the air filter in your car only taller, so theyre tube-shaped. They fit down inside a 2-piece tank that has a removable top. These are usually tall and slender compared to a sand filter.
Like a sand filter, different size pools will need different size filters. A 10,000-gallon pool will need a cartridge filter that is rated at 100-200 square feet, while a 40,000-gallon pool will need a cartridge filter that is rated at 500+ square feet.
Because cartridge filters have such a large surface area for catching debris, they dont need nearly as much pressure as sand filters do. Lower pressure means less work for your pump, which translates into less wear and tear on it, thus extending its workable life.
Cleaning a cartridge filter is easy. When the water pressure at the pump reaches 10 PSI, its time to clean it. Take the top off the tank and remove the filter. Then wash it off with the garden hose. Put the filter back in the tank and secure the top.
Overall, cartridge filters have a higher initial cost than sand filters and the cartridges themselves are more expensive than sand. This is balanced by the ease of cleaning them and the fact you dont lose water by backwashing, then having to add more water.
How To Choose The Right Size Of Filter For Your Pool
Choosing the right size pool filter for your pool is not always a simple task, but it is crucial to ensuring that your pool stays safe, clean, and open. The first step when picking the right sized pool filter is picking the right size pool pump.
Choose the Right Size Pump
Many people err on the side of caution and purchase a pump that is far bigger than what they need. This can be a costly mistake. Larger pumps are more expensive, and may increase your energy bill compared to an appropriately sized pump. Worse, a pump that is too large can overpower your filter system. A pump that is too small may lack the power needed to effectively pump and filter your pool. This can lead to a buildup of bacteria and algae.
Choose the Right Size of filter
Even if you have the right sized pump, if you choose a filter that is too small, the pump will generate too much pressure, causing the filtering material to break down and rendering the filter ineffective. The pressure build-up caused by small filters causes pressure to build up in your pump, and in some cases this has resulted in explosions, or serious damage to your pump.
The correct sized filter and pump should be able to fully cycle all of your pool water in about eight hours. This simple guide will show you how to find the right sized pump and filter for your pool.

Pool filters are a key component when it comes to keeping your pool clean. The filter removes tiny particles including algae, bacteria, and other contaminants from the water and traps them in filtration mediawhich may be sand, DE , or paper cartridges.
Cartridge pool filters are the most common and affordable type of pool filter but do require regular cleaning and occasional replacement. Sand pool filters are popular for their low maintenance requirements but require backwashing and a full change of sand about every 5 years. In addition, they only capture particles as small as 20 microns, which is less effective than some other types of pool filters. Pool filters with DE capture the smallest particles but require more time and effort to clean and backwash the system for continued filter performance.

Choosing The Right Size Filter
Whether you decide on a Sand Filter, a Cartridge Filter or a D.E. Filter, its important to select a pool filter that is sized correctly for your pool.
Determining what size filter is best for your pool comes down to how big your pool is. The size of your pool determines the size of your pump, which in turn, determines the size of your filter.
In, general, a bigger filter is typically better as it means:
- Longer filter cycles or time between backwashing.
- Longer lasting filter media
Pump and filters are both measured by the GPM , otherwise known as the flow rate. The flow rate on the filter must be rated at least the same GPM as your pump, or higher. If you choose a filter that is too small, the pump will generate too much pressure, causing the filter to break and possibly burn out your pump.
To err on the safe side, it is always best to consult with your local pool professional for advice and guidance on the best filter based on the size of your pool and the size and type of pool pump currently installed in your pool pad.
