What Is Shocking The Pool

How To Use Liquid Chlorine In Pools | HD Supply

The term shocking means to add enough chlorine to pool or spa water to destroy all combined chlorine present in the water. This usually requires adding 10 times the amount of combined chlorine present in . The common term for this is called breakpoint chlorination. The other reason for shocking the pool is to remove algae or bacteria, by oxidizing all contaminants in the pool. All of the shock treatments I mentioned above can be used for both purposes for removing combined chlorine and for killing algae and bacteria.

No matter what type of pool shock you use it is very important that you follow the instructions on the label very carefully. Make sure the chemicals are stored in a cool dry place and always apply chemicals directly to pool / spa water not water to chemicals.

Similarities Between Liquid Chlorine & Powdered Shock

Liquid chlorine and powdered shock are both considered unstabilized forms of chlorine. It is important to note their similarities and differences when determining which sanitizer is right for you and your pool.

Similarly, both forms have a higher concentration of available chlorine than those used in daily chlorination. They also both kill nearly all living microorganisms, bacteria and contaminants with ease. In addition, liquid chlorine and powdered shock will clear your cloudy pool water fast while also helping to control algae.

Should You Buy The Best Products Online

Today, many online stores buy the liquid pool shock you want, but it is essential to know its pros and cons. First, by going online, you will have access to a much more comprehensive range of products than if you were in a physical store.

However, when buying things this way, customers often have difficulty trying everything before buying. This can annoy those who are unsure of what they want or may worry that they might end up with something that doesnt suit their needs.

Another problem is the pricing strategy used by some stores, where the price may seem cheap at first glance, but when it comes to shipping costs and possibly more fees than an item purchased. It is therefore important to compare similar products from different stores to determine the best and most affordable for your needs.

Choosing The Right Pool Shock For Your Pool Type Or Hot Tub

Above Ground Pools

For shallower pools and/or pools with vinyl liners, like above-ground pools, you will want to take extra care to find a pool shock that dissolves quickly. You donât want granules to settle on the bottom of the pool as this can bleach, damage, or even split your pool liner.

Saltwater Pools

Some pool shock products claim to be better for saltwater systems than others, but you can actually use any pool shock in a saltwater pool. As the system is creating chlorine from the salt, shock works the same as in any other pool. Often saltwater systems come with a high setting you can use to produce more chlorine and âshockâ the pool, however, we donât recommend using this regularly, as it can shorten the lifespan of the system.

Hot Tubs

Donât use calcium hypochlorite shock in a hot tub. The chlorine evaporates too quickly and it can cause calcium buildup in a small volume of water. Donât use liquid shock either, as it increases the chlorine level too rapidly. We would recommend using pool shock that is specifically designed for use as part your hot tub ideas, otherwise check with the manufacturer before using.

In The Swim Super Pool Shock

Specifications

Taking the top spot, In the Swim Super Pool Shock Treatment is the strongest pool shock on our list with 73% available chlorine. This means it quickly eradicates contaminants like algae and bacteria. It is perfect for getting your pool open for the season and during periods of heavy use and it can even wipe out stubborn algae blooms. Because it’s super strong, it’s also good value for money as each 1lb bag shocks up to 15,000 gallons of water. Depending on how often you use your pool, you might only need to use it bi-weekly.

We love that theyâve made it so easy by pre-portioning into small 1lb bags so thereâs no need to do any measuring at all. This way thereâs less chance of harsh chemicals coming into contact with your skin. As this is a strong shock, a lot of backyard pool owners will only need to use one bag. You simply pour the bag straight into the deepest part of the pool and leave overnight with the pump running. By the morning you should have crystal clear water that’s ready for swimming.

A drawback is that the granules can settle on the bottom of the pool which can bleach the liner or, if you have a vinyl liner, even cause it to become brittle and leak. If you do find granules settle on the bottom of your pool, to avoid damage you can pre-mix shock with water in a bucket and ensure it’s completely dissolved before adding it to your pool. This does make the whole process less convenient though.

Is Liquid Chlorine The Same As Granular Shock

Liquid chlorine and granular shock are not the same. While both share similar characteristics, they have some key differences. For example, liquid chlorine and granular shock are both considered unstabilized chlorine. They are also highly concentrated, allowing them to control algae, kill bacteria and clear your cloudy pool quickly.

Unlike liquid chlorine, granular shock does not come in liquid form. Instead, it is a solid that dissolves in water.

How Often Should You Shock Your Pool

How Often Should I Shock My Pool? Shocking your pool regularly will help to keep the water clean and free of contaminants. You should aim to shock your pool about once a week, with the additional shock after heavy use. Some tell-tale signs that your pool needs to be shocked are cloudy, foamy, green, or odourous water.

What Is Pool Shock

Liquid Pool Shock, 1 Gallon

Shock is a general term for products that increase the available free chlorine level of your pool, spa, or hot tub. Shock can refer to liquid chlorine, granular shock, or bromine concentrate. You can use it at the first sign of bacteria and organic contaminants in your pool or hot tub.

Pool experts recommend regularly shocking your water to lessen the chance of algae and organics from growing. All these elements can affect your water, making it unsafe to swim.

  • Is this liquid pool shock worth it?
  • What are the liquid pool shock features to look for?

  • Is the liquid pool shock durable?
  • Does the company offer customer service & warranty?

Briefly, heres what you need to know:

How Much Chlorine Do You Need To Shock A Pool

Unfortunately, you can’t shock your pool using your regular 3-inch chlorine tablets. Common chlorine sanitizing products are great for maintaining chlorine levels, but not necessarily eliminating new waste, bacteria and algae. A good shock product should raise the free chlorine above 5 parts per million for several hours to destroy bacteria and chloramines. Keep in mind, if you have visible algae of any kind , you may need to double or triple the normal dosing of pool shock to eradicate the problem. Thats where the power of shock come in. For example, some 1-pound bags of shock treatment can deliver 7 parts per million of free chlorine per 10,000 gallons of pool water.

Whats Better Liquid Chlorine Or Granular Chlorine

Thats your decision, but it will be decided on availability, cost and personal preference. I normally use granular shock, but when opening the pool, I like to use 5 gallons of Clorox bleach just before shocking the pool with dissolved Cal Hypo granular. When shocking clean and clear water however, I prefer to use either non-chlorine shock or Lithium shock, on my own backyard pool.

Please remember that all types of chlorine react strongly when mixed with other chlorine types or any contaminants. Never mix chlorine types, and keep them safely separated, clean, cool and dry at all times.

Can You Use Liquid Chlorine In A Vinyl Pool

Eel Suffers Toxic Shock From Brine Pool | Blue Planet II

Liquid chlorine is a good choice to use in a vinyl liner pool. The chlorine itself isn’t as concentrated as others and it distributes very quickly throughout the water reducing the risk of having concentrated areas of chlorine. You should pour liquid chlorine evenly into specific areas of your pool.

What Type Of Shock Should I Use

The type of shock you should use will depend on your water chemistry and the reason you’re shocking. If the water is green, you should use a cal-hypo shock. However, if you’re shocking as part of weekly maintenance and your pool looks clean, you can use sodium dichlor, potassium monopersulfate or sodium hypochlorite.

Chlorine Vs Powdered Shock Which One Will Fight Harder For You

When you visit us in store you may notice other pool owners walking around with different forms of chlorine. Some are walking around with jugs, some small packages, and others carry chlorine in buckets. Chlorine is often a widely-used term, as it has become the generic label for the worlds most popular sanitizer. Truthfully, chlorine is only available in gas state. Pool chlorine, is derived from this form of gas that has been mixed with other chemicals to form a liquid or solid sanitizer.

The true difference amongst chlorine does not lie in the form it comes in, but rather from being either unstabilized or stabilized. Liquid chlorine and powdered shock have the same active chemical that work to clean your pool, the difference is in the way that you use them.

Pool Essentials 4 In 1 Shock Treatment

Specifications

If youâre lucky enough to have a super sunny pool, this trichlor pool shock by Pool Essentials is the one for you. You likely need to add a pool conditioner to your sun-soaked pool regularly to prevent the chlorine from evaporating too quickly in all that UV light. This stabilizer essentially acts as a sunscreen for your chlorine. Instead of remembering to add this separately, do it all in one. Use this pool shock about once a week to keep your water clean and clear.

This shock is also fantastic if you have problems with calcium hardness. As the active ingredient is sodium trichloro-s-triazinetrione instead of calcium hypochlorite, it doesnât increase calcium levels in the water and you avoid scaling, prolonging the life of your pool equipment. Using calcium hypochlorite-based shock in a small pool can be especially problematic as the calcium is less diluted and can build up.

This option might work for you if your pool is indoors or shady too, but be sure to test your pool water before you shock. If the cyanuric acid level is high, adding this shock with cyanuric acid mixed in is not a good idea. You can throw the PH balance off which can irritate skin and corrode pool equipment. In this case, better to use our top pick above instead.

Overall, this is the best pick for a swimming pool that gets a lot of sunshine. It is affordable, easy to use, and super convenient with a pool conditioner built-in.

Active Ingredients In Pool Shock

SPLASH® Pool Shock Liquid Chlorinator
  • Calcium Hypochlorite The cheapest and most readily available pool shock is made with calcium hypochlorite. This is strong and efficient, but it can cause calcium buildup or bleach your pool liner.
  • Sodium Dichloro-s-triazinetrione or Sodium Trichloro-s-triazinetrione Also very popular and effective. It can cause PH imbalance as it contains cyanuric acid , but this helps chlorine last longer in UV light so itâs great for sunny pools.
  • Potassium monopersulfate A slightly less popular, chlorine-free option. Works by oxidizing water to free up chlorine that is already present. It doesnât add calcium or chlorine. It is usually safe to swim again more quickly after applying this type of pool shock.

What Do Swimming Pool Chemicals Do

  • Adding chlorine to your pool reduces the risks of spreading waterborne illness, from minor infections and stomach upsets to more serious issues caused by bacterial growth.
  • Chlorine also helps stop the buildup of algae and other water contaminants, helping to ensure a pleasant swim all through the summer.

Is The Liquid Pool Shock Worth It

The liquid pool shock is a good value because it offers minimal compromises. The product does not compromise on quality for increased convenience or ease of use but offers high quality without any drawbacks associated with its design.

The liquid pool shock offers what customers want, and above all, it ensures that they are getting their moneys worth on top of all this extraordinary performance. The producer behind the product first asked how it could improve its existing services without breaking any barriers or limitations. To achieve this, they first need to understand what people demand most to generate greater profits and deliver sustainable growth with less effort and the best product.

What Is The Difference Between Liquid Shock And Bromine

Liquid chlorine, or sodium hypochlorite solution, tends to be the better option when it comes to keeping your swimming pool clean. Liquid chlorine contains no cyanuric acid, or chlorine stabilizer, making it a great choice if your pool’s cyanuric levels are high.

Bromine is similar to chlorine and works best for hot tubs. It does not have the same strong smell as other pool shocks and is less harsh on sensitive skin. However, bromine is generally more expensive and is not stabilized, making it a poor choice if your pool or spa is directly in the sun.
