Dont Cut Corners On Chemicals

Pool owners scramble to buy chlorine tablets during shortage

When you make a significant investment like installing and operating a swimming pool or spa, it only makes sense to properly maintain that investment. In order to do that, you need high-quality pool maintenance supplies and the know-how behind them.

Here are five reasons you should never cut corners on your pool chemicals:

  • Follow the leaders.Pool care professionals know their business. They understand that getting pool chemistry right the first time, every time makes for quick work and happy customers. On the contrary, using an inferior product can mean multiple chemical applications to find the right balance, and frustrated pool users. Youll never see a pool expert buying chemicals at a big box outlet. They go straight to the pool supply store. You are wise to follow their lead.
  • Quality matters. Dont get me wrong big box stores are a great place to buy many of the items you use. However, pool care is something these stores just dont specialize in. They are, understandably, more focused on making a profit and have price points that suppliers must meet. Consequently, its not uncommon for a manufacturer to add fillers of various kinds to the formulations that are packaged for the discount store. These diluted products do not, of course, perform as well as the full-strength version and you have to use more to achieve the same effect.
  • What You Put in Affects What You Get Out

    A Local Big Box Store

Big box stores carry so many products. Most stores will have a section dedicated to pool chemicals. These stores can be a lifesaver when you realize you need to shock your pool immediately, but the local pool supply store is closed, and you cant wait for shipping!

You can Shop Walmart Online for pool supplies also.

    Items To Purchase With Chlorine

You will need to purchase some additional products along with swimming pool chlorine for complete pool sanitizing.

In order to use the pool chlorine, be sure you have safety gloves so that your skin does not come in contact with the actual chlorine tablets. Although they have a reduced amount of chlorine in them, they can still irritate your skin.

Another item to consider purchasing with your pool chlorine are testing strips or a test kit that will be used to determine the sanitizing effectiveness in your pool. Also, your local A& S store provides free computerized water testing.

Chlorine Buying Guide: Look To The Label

    • Percentage of Available Chlorine. Trichlor tablets or sticks can be as high as 90 percent available chlorine, and liquid chlorine can be as low as 10 percent available. What this means is that pound for pound, the 90 percent available chlorine has more chlorine creating potential than the 10 percent, nine times more to be exact. Compare the cost per pound for similar or different chlorine types to make the best comparison.
    • Stabilized Chlorine. When you see the word Stabilized on the label or in the name, this means that the chlorine has an additive known as cyanuric acid. CYA, as I call it, protects chlorine from the sun by attaching itself to the chlorine molecule, forming something of a molecular umbrella, shielding it from ultraviolet rays.
    • Active Ingredient. Theres all sorts of fancy brands, with hard-hitting names like Sock-It and Burn-Out. If you look at the label, on the lower left, youll see a line listing the active ingredient. Compare apples to apples in this way, and the numerous options available to you will make more sense.

Why Is There A Pool Chlorine Shortage

In The Swim 3" Inch Pool Chlorine Tablets

Everhart speculates that the extreme shortages were seeing are in part due to the number of new pools built last summer during the pandemic.

And businesses nationwide have seen their supply of chlorine tablets affected by a chemical fire last August that burned through BioLab Inc.s factory in Louisiana for three days.

Tracy Dick confirmed that the U.S. chlorine market has been severely impacted this season due to a devastating fire at a major chlorine manufacturing plant last year.

Approximately 40% of the industrys chlorine supply was eliminated for 2021 and demand has been strong. To help maintain inventory and availability, we are limiting chlorine tab purchases to one bucket per customer, she said.

BioLab said that despite the setback from the fire, it is still manufacturing tablets.

We are still producing chlorine tablets and will be supplying them to our retailers throughout the season, BioLab President Jon Viner said in a statement. Unfortunately, there may be times when retailers do not have adequate supply on the shelves.

Stithem at Sun Devil Pool Supply said the company sources products from multiple manufacturers. That has helped ensure that the store has chlorine tablets in stock, albeit in limited quantities.

Chlorine Tablets: Limited Quantities Almost Double The Price

Customers of Leslies Pool Supplies, which has 72 locations in central Arizona and more than 900 across the U.S., are greeted with this message at the top of the companys website: We are limiting chlorine tab purchases to one bucket per customer to manage the supply and demand in an effort to meet our customers needs throughout the season.

The number of tablets required for a pool per week can vary, according to Tracy Dick, vice president of brand marketing at Leslies.

Most pools around 10,000 gallons in size will require one to two 3-inch tablets per week, based on variables including water temperature, air temperature, environment and usage,” Dick said in a statement to The Arizona Republic. “However, there are no standard guidelines. Every pool is different, so we cannot stress enough how important it is to test your water regularly.

Taylor Stithem, a manager at Sun Devil Pool Supply and Service in Chandler, said customers are limited to two buckets of tablets for now. The price of chlorine tablets has gone up significantly since last year, he said.

A bucket of tablets that cost $109 a year ago is now $199, Stithem said. He estimates the price is increasing in $10 increments every couple of weeks. The price plateaued for a couple months this year before starting to go up again, he added.

Stithem said he was not sure how long this would last.

A Word On The Safe Use Of Chlorine Products

Never, ever mix chlorine products! None of these products mentioned above can be mixed together and never mix other pool chemicals with chlorine. Explosions and fire can be the immediate result. Always keep chlorine compounds out of the reach of children and stored in a cool, dry location. Keep them separate so that theres no chance of accidental mixing of chlorine products.

When opening a bucket of tablets or a bag of shock, always hold your breath. Moisture in buckets can create a strong gas, which is why its always best to store tablets in a dry location, not outside in the elements.

When closing a bucket of tablets, always secure the lid tightly to prevent a child from opening the lid, taking a big whiff, and falling face first into the bucket.

When using a bag of chlorine shock, always use the entire bag. Dont store half-used bags of pool shock. This would risk contamination or mixing with other chemicals.

    How To Buy Pool Chlorine

Chlorine is the most popular sanitizer in America for swimming pools, wells and water treatment.

Swimming pool chlorine is produced in many types, shapes and concentrations, so many that it can get downright confusing, especially if youre a new pool owner.

This article will discuss chlorine in all its forms and provide some ways to understand the costs and benefits of the dozen or so different chlorine products we offer at In The Swim.

As a means of differentiation, lets first break down chlorine into two groups: those types used for everyday chlorination and types used for pool shocking or super chlorination.

What Can You Do About The Pool Chlorine Shortage

Experts are asking pool owners to buy only as much as they need which in most cases will be one bucket of chlorine tablets, according to Rudy Stankowitz, CEO of Aquatic Facility Training & Consultants in Florida.

I think the severity of the shortage is going to be directly related to people buying in reasonable quantities, Stankowitz told USA TODAY. If you stock up, it will make it even harder to find.

BioLab shared ways for residential pool owners to keep their water clean and clear during this temporary situation in a press release.

It reads: BioLab’s top recommendation is to use pool chlorinating liquid as a quick and convenient option to maintain the recommended chlorine residual of 1-4 ppm in the water.

David Rouse, BioLab’s vice president of research and development, advised: “One gallon of chlorinating liquid is equivalent to dosing your pool with two of the traditional 8-ounce chlorinating tablets. Just be sure to use chlorinating liquid intended for pool care, as it contains a higher concentration of the active ingredient, sodium hypochlorite, than common household bleach.

He added, You’ll also need to be mindful that the pH will increase, requiring addition of other products to offset the pH drift from pool chlorinating liquid. You should also add a stabilizer to prevent liquid chlorine from quickly degrading in the sunlight.”

Does It Matter Where I Buy My Pool Chemicals

When it comes to enjoying your backyard pool or spa, the cleanliness and clarity of the water is critically important. One of the most important factors in maintaining the healthy state of your water is the chemicals you use. Chlorine, bromine, pH increasers and decreasers, alkalinity increasers and decreasers, calcium hardness increaser these and others all play a role in maintaining proper water chemistry.

Like running your pump and heater, keeping an adequate supply of these chemicals on hand is one of the costs of operating a pool. However, people sometimes believe that chemicals are chemicals and look to save a few bucks by buying their pool maintenance supplies in bulk at a big box store. Unfortunately, this approach can backfire for a number of reasons. When the question is Does it matter where I buy my pool chemicals? the answer is an emphatic Yes!

What The Chlorine Shortage Means For Public Pools

Big-scale operations such as Golfland Sunsplash water park in Mesa are not affected by the chlorine tablet shortage.

We aren’t expecting any issues. The shortage is in stabilized chlorine tablets, which is mainly for residential applications, said Tony Jones, marketing director of Golfland Entertainment Centers. Most large facilities use liquid chlorine.

Some Scottsdale residents have expressed concern that city public pools will be affected by the shortage, Ann Porter, communications supervisor for community services in Scottsdale, told The Republic.

“Any shortage doesnt really impact our pools,” Porter said. “We have completed the conversion of all of the Scottsdale aquatics water treatment systems last year. The new systems manufacture chlorine with a process of and electricity. This technology is also coupled with the use of , hyper dissolve oxygen, super fine filtration, ultraviolet light, and pH control. These are all fully automated systems.”

Why Is There A Chlorine Shortage Right Now

What If I Can’t Find Chlorine Tabs for My Pool?

Blame two factors for the chlorine shortage, says CNBC. One, unsurprisingly, is COVID-19: Last summer, sales for swimming pools skyrocketed as people all over the planet stayed home during the pandemic, leading to an increased demand for prepared chlorine products.

But the other cause is more surprising: In August 2020, a chlorine plant just outside Lake Charles, Louisianaresponsible for making a bulk of the U.S.s chlorine tabletsburned down in the wake of Hurricane Laura, putting a huge dent in the production of chlorine tablets.

The BioLab facility will reopen in 2022, but in the meantime, its absence leaves just two domestic manufacturers of chlorine tablets: Occidental Petroleum and Clearon Corp. Even if both manufacturers increase production, theyd have to ramp up roughly 50 percent each to fill in the gap during the chlorine shortage.

Experts say the chlorine shortage will cause empty shelves in stores and extreme markups, which, because of the seasonal nature of pool usage, is about to come as a rude awakening to many outdoor pool owners. The financial services company IHS Markit says chlorine prices are expected to spike 70 percent this summer, compared to 2020.

If your average 50-pound bucket of chlorine used to cost $75 to $85, it now costs $140 and is expected to hit $158 in the near future, Scotty Heer, the owner of the Las Vegas-based Scottys Pool Service, told CNBC.

    Chlorine Tablets & Sticks

Trichloro-S-Triazinetrione is the most popular type of chlorine for everyday use. It comes packaged in 3-inch tablets, 1-inch tablets or as sticks. They contain different pressings, but are chemically the same. Known as Trichlor for short, most varieties are 89 percent available chlorine .

Sticks or tablets have no difference other than shape. Some prefer tablets because they will stack better inside of a chlorinator or floater. The large tablets are typically 6 ounces, whereas the sticks are slightly larger at 8 ounces. The 1-inch mini tabs are faster dissolving than the 3-inch tabs , due to their increased surface area exposed to your pool water. Smaller tabs are useful for chlorinating spas or for larger pools that need a faster-dissolving tablet.

DOT shipping regulations require that chlorine tablets be individually wrapped. This can be inconvenient when you need to open many of them, although it does reduce the amount of chlorine handling and lowers the chances of contamination from dirt, debris or other pool chemicals. Opening a wrapped tablet underwater in the skimmer will avoid the chlorine dust.

Trichlor has a low pH value, close to that of Coca-Cola, around 3.0. This can lead to a steady decline in your pools pH level, and for some pools, will require adjustment to the pH by occasionally adding a pH increaser.
