Your filter system is designed to pull in, clean and circulate your pool water. Of course, an integral part of that system is your skimmer, and the skimmer can be leveraged when it comes to adding chlorine to your pool.

All you need to do is add chlorine to your pool skimmer , and you can sit back and let it do the work of sending the dissolved chlorine through your filter system and our into your pool water.

This is more effective than a floating dispenser and is a much better option overall, but you will need to remove the chlorine from your skimmer when your pump is off, otherwise youll get a high concentration of chlorinated water which can be corrosive.

Pool Brand Swimming Pool Chlorine Tablets

Last, but not least, we have these chlorine tablets manufactured by Pool Brand. The tablets also arrive in an individual wrap, thus maintaining their original properties and functions. In other words, they arent exposed to moisture, which could impair their functionality. The bags are also easy to open.

The fact that they are approved by the EPA should give you peace of mind. In order to ensure the efficiency of the tablets, they have been UV stabilized. If this characteristic is important for you, these tablets might be down your alley.

As for the texture of the tablets, it is not overly crumbly, which can make them difficult to handle. This is why they leave a minimal amount of residue.

The pace at which they dissolve is consistent. This is critical in order to ensure that the chlorine is distributed evenly inside the water. Concurrently, this ensures that the level of chlorine remains consistent.

Pros

  • Since the tablets arrived individually wrapped, this makes it easy for you to handle them.
  • Good price for the quality
  • The tablets have been UV stabilized

Clorox is a reputable brand when it comes to efficient household cleaning supplies. And these chlorinating tablets offer a good price to quality ratio if you want to maintain your pool clean and sanitized. They are versatile, in the sense that they are compatible with in-ground and above-ground pools.

Similar to our first recommendation, these are also individually wrapped. This means that their original properties are maintained until you use them. They do an excellent job at killing bacteria, deterring the growth of algae.

Still, this doesnt mean that you should no longer monitor the quality of the water: as its better to be safe than sorry.

A rather inconvenient characteristic is the unpleasant, dangerous chlorine dust youll find inside the packages. But this comes with the territory. You must be extra careful when handling the tablets: its best to wear adequate gloves. As an extra measure of precaution, you might also wear a mask over your mouth and nose.

A noteworthy disadvantage would be that the texture of the tablets is a tad crumbly. This is why, in comparison with other top picks, these tablets might produce more dust, which is inconvenient.

In The Swim Knowledge Pool: Pool Chlorine & Bromine

America’s Most Popular Pool Chlorine!

According to the CDC, free chlorine kills most bacteria in less than a minute if concentrations and pH level are maintained properly. Swimming pool chlorine is the most widely accepted pool sanitizer available, and for over 75 years, pool chlorine has been the most popular method to disinfect and sanitize pool water. Pool bromine can be used as an alternative pool water treatment, yet chlorine tablets and granular chlorine remain America’s first choice for maintaining clean and clear pool water.

What Should I Do If I Cant Get A Chlorine Reading

If youre pool water test kit cant give you a chlorine reading, the best thing to do is to get your pool professional or pool service engineer to conduct a chlorine demand test.

In some circumstances its possible that the chlorine level in your pool is so high that it is bleaching the reagent in your test kit, so having a professional test the water is really the most sensible option and that will tell you which course of action to take.

If you need to break the chlorine demand cycle then you will have to first test and adjust the pH levels and then shock the pool with 2 to 3lbs of shock per 10,000 gallons. Circulate the water and then test again.

The chlorine demand test should give you an idea of how much shock will eventually need adding to the pool and if this is excessively high you may have to consider partially draining the pool and refilling.

Checking And Testing Water

Before putting liquid chlorine in your pool, you must test the water. Since the liquid chlorine is so potent, you could easily make the mistake of adding too much liquid chlorine to your pool. Test the water prior to putting the chlorine in, and then recheck the water before swimming. If you donât do this, you may struggle with a pool that has a difficult-to-control chlorine level.

In addition, you will want to pay attention to the pH level when using any products in your pool.

The Different Types Of Chlorine

Use Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide To Lower Chlorine

Yes, the stuff sitting in your first aid kit. But a much, much stronger version of it.

First aid hydrogen peroxide is about 3% concentrated. Food grade hydrogen peroxide is about 35% concentrated.

A gallon of it shouldnt be more than 20 bucks, and you likely wont need more than half.

Similar to sodium thiosulfate, hydrogen peroxide also has the side effect of lowering pH. So make sure to test your water after each treatment.

To start, add a cup of peroxide to your pool to lower chlorine. Test your water a few hours later and readjust chemicals as needed.

Chloramines And Pool Operation

Chlorine is used in pools and other chlorinated aquatic venues to kill germs, but when it binds to the body waste swimmers bring into pools it can form chemicals called chloramines. Chloramines in the water, like dichloramine and trichloramine, irritate skin, eyes, and the respiratory tract when they off gas from the water and into the air above, particularly indoors 13. In addition, chloramines can also contribute to corrosion of metals around the aquatic venue and in air handling systems.

PROSPECT, Ky.

Several members of a swim team at a country club in northeast Louisville were exposed to what may have been a chlorine leak, according to the Glen Oaks Swim Team.

During Tuesday night’s swim practice at the Glen Oaks Country Club, in Prospect, a chemical leak developed in the pool which the swim team said was assumed to be chlorine.

Some swimmers were transported to the hospital for treatment.

The swim team advised anyone exposed to shower, wash their hair, flush their eyes and scrub down as much as possible.

The swim team’s Facebook page advised that even if swimmers were not feeling ill after exposure to be aware that symptoms could develop later.

Those symptoms include coughing, drowsiness, lethargy and trouble breathing.

Anyone experiencing those symptoms is advised to seek medical attention immediately by going to an emergency room.

There is no word as of now on the condition of the swimmers taken to the hospital.

WLKY reached out to area emergency services to see if they were involved but have yet to receive any response.

What Does Hold Chlorine Even Mean

Pool Chlorine 10kg

Well, there are two ways to interpret this:

The first is if youve tested your water soon after adding chlorine only to find youre somehow seeing no free chlorine in your pool.

The second is if your water always seems to look dirty or green despite adding plenty of chlorine and getting a normal free chlorine reading.

Either of these scenarios is bad news for you as a pool owner, but they do each offer a clue as to what might be causing your pool water to ignore chlorine, and how you might go about fixing it.

How To Raise Your Swimming Pool Chlorine

You first need to test your existing pool chlorine level to determine if you just need a slight adjustment or if you need to shock the pool in cases where you have combined chlorine in the water.

Do you already have a chlorinator, chlorine feeder, or chlorine floater? If so, you will be adding your chlorine to this device. If you typically add chlorine directly into your skimmer, stop doing this . Adding regular chlorine pool products to your skimmer causes the chlorine in the water travelling to your pool equipment to drastically rise and reduce your pH level, making the water passing through the pool equipment corrosive. This will damage your pool equipment over time, causing corrosion and introducing unwanted metals like copper into your pool.

There are several variations of chlorine you can add to your pool:

If there are more CCs, you must unload the pool. Bound chlorine indicates that there is something in the water, free chlorine is broken down. In an outdoor pool, bound chlorine generally stays close to zero as long as you maintain a reasonable level of free chlorine and there is direct sunlight in the pool.

What Is Pool Chlorine Exactly

Pool owners facing chlorine shortage as summer approaches

Chlorine is a chemical sanitizer that typically comes in either tablet, powder or liquid form, which is then prepped and added to your swimming pool in order to keep your pool water clean and safe to swim.

Chlorine fights against everything from:

  • Micro-organisms carrying diseases such as cholera, hepatitis A, and dysentery
  • Poo, pee, sweat, saliva, and dirt from other people swimming in the pool
  • Dirt and debris from the wider environment
  • Any growth and spread of algae

So far so simple, but how does it actually work?

Once the chlorine is added to your water, it forms a new substance called hydrochloric acid which disables harmful bacteria, viruses and other microscopic dangers by combining with them. Combined chlorine is also known as chloramine.

And not to worry, the doses of hydrochloric acid being described here are far less harmful to us humans, and certainly less harmful than letting those microscopic nasties live and breed freely in your pool.

Finally, this reaction works best under the right pH conditions so youll want to keep a close eye on your levels when using chlorine. Sunlight also speeds up the process, meaning youll burn through more chlorine if your pool is constantly in the sun.

S Pool Operators Should Take To Prevent And Get Rid Of Chloramines In The Water And Surrounding Air

Encourage healthy swimming to prevent chloramines from forming by stopping pee, poop, urine, dirt, and sweat from entering the water in the first place.

  • Post signs or posters in the locker room that encourage swimmers and staff to:
  • NOT enter the water when they have diarrhea,
  • Use the toilet before getting into the water,
  • Wear a bathing cap while in the water, and
  • NOT to pee or poop in the water.
  • Require swimmers and staff to at least take a rinse shower before getting into the waterin other words, swimmers and staff should be wet before they get into the water. Even a quick rinse shower removes much of the body waste that helps form chloramines.
  • Be on alert for poop in the water the distinctive chloramine odor in the swimming area and respiratory, eye, or skin irritation in swimmers and staff in the swimming area.
  • If the swimmer who pooped in the water is identified, charge a fee to the swimmer or parent of the young swimmer for fecal incident clean up pdf icon
  • Ensure that airflow in the swimming area is set up to minimize the buildup of chloramines in the air.

Monitor combined chlorine levels in the water and treat the water, especially when levels are too high.

Do You Have A Saltwater Pool

If you have a salt pool, its also possible your saltwater generator is having trouble making or maintaining chlorine.

There are a number of reasons for this, including:

    • Not running the generator long enough.
    • Strong calcium buildup in your salt cell.
    • A fault with the generator
    • Not enough stabilizer

Most generators will let you know of any problems through an indicator light, so always pay attention to what your interface says.

You should know: Free chlorine naturally sits lower in a saltwater pool because it doesnt rely on large dumps of chlorine, so dont expect the same chlorine reading as youd see in a traditional chlorine pool.

    Cooling Your Pool Down

In hindsight, overly warm water seems like an obvious reason as to why your pool is burning through chlorine. What thrives in a warm and wet environment? Thats a right, bacterium!

So if your pool is feeling more like a hot tub, you may want to consider figuring out a way to lower the temperature to avoid using copious amounts of chlorine to keep the bugs away.

There are a number of great options including an aerator. An aerator is an attachment that is screwed into the side of your pool and sprays water back into your pool. This process introduces oxygen into the main body of water, bringing the temperature down a few degrees.

If youre looking for a bigger drop in temperature , then consider a pool cooler. A pool cooler cools water via a fan. The cold water is then pumped back into the pool.

The system is expensive, but if your guests start complaining that your pool is feeling more like a bathtub, its probably a good investment.

Using Liquid Chlorine In Your Pool

Clorox Pool& spa 6 lb Chlorinating Granules

Liquid chlorine very simple to use and takes only a few minutes. Liquid chlorine is a non-stabilized form of chlorine, which means it will evaporate quickly when exposed to direct sunlight. For this reason, its best to add liquid chlorine to your pool in the evening, after the sun has already set.

  • Start by measuring out the appropriate amount of chlorine for the size of pool youre treating. Go to the deep end of your pool and pour the chlorine in, being sure to keep it as close to the surface of the water as possible to avoid splashing.
  • After adding the chlorine to the deep end, take a brush and use it to brush the walls and floor of your pool. This serves two purposes. First, it helps loosen up any bacteria or algae thats growing on the surfaces of your pool so that the chlorine can more easily eliminate them. Second, it helps to effectively disperse the chlorine throughout the pool so that its not concentrated into a single area. If you dont spread the chlorine through the pool, you could potentially cause damage to the pool liner because of how strongly concentrated the chlorine is.
  • Once youve finished brushing down the walls and floor of your pool, leave the pool uncovered and let your pool pump circulate overnight. In the morning, youll need to check the chlorine levels in your pool water to ensure that theyre in the normal range.
