Biological Factors In Maintaining Clean Pool Water

Once you have taken steps to ensure that your water is filtered and circulating properly and that the pool chemicals are in balance, youll want to make sure your water stays clean. The primary ways to make this happen is to practice proper sanitation, to perform shock oxidation treatments, when necessary, and through algae control.

The most common pool sanitizers are chlorine and bromine. Both control the level of bacteria in your pool water. Shock oxidation helps prevent the buildup of bather waste, such as perspiration, which can combine with chlorine to irritate bathers eyes and mucous membranes, compromise chlorines ability to disinfect your pool water and which can lead to a strong odor.

After a storm or heavy rainfall, your pool may experience an influx of debris or organic material which may lead to algae growth or combined chlorine. Administering a shock oxidation treatment after these major weather events can help avoid these problems.

The easiest way to control algae is to prevent it in the first place. The most common types of algae found in pools are green algae, yellow algae and black algae. Use an algaecide as part of your routine pool maintenance which treats existing growth and discourages new growth.

Maintaining Your Pool In Balance

Tips for maintaining your pool:

  • Make sure you have a reliable chlorinating system, whether it is an in-line, floater, or salt system. Chlorine needs to be in the pool always. Throwing a jug of liquid in it once a week isn’t a good way of maintaining the pool. A simple tablet chlorine floater is very effective.
  • Use a water clarification solution.
  • Clean your filter. DE filters are by far the best filter to have. Although a bit more costly to purchase at first, they will save you both time and lots of money in the long run.
  • How often to clean your filter:

    • DE filters: Backwash once a month.
    • Sand filters: Backwash once every two weeks. Be sure to backwash your sand filter for a minimum of four minutes otherwise, you will see filthy water shooting back into the pool.
    • Cartridge filters: Clean it every three to four weeks, unless you see algae in the pool, in which case you should clean more often. Here’s more about how to clean a cartridge filter. Soak in trisodium phosphate every three months.

    Algae Meet Pool Shock

    Why Is My Pool Cloudy?

Other sources might tell you that if you have algae, you need to use pool shock. And theyre right: its pool shock thatll do most of the work to do the actual killing. But without these other steps, your shock wont work as well, and it certainly wont be enough to take care of your algae problem in any permanent way.

Since youve scrubbed and vacuumed your pool and tested your water balance, your pool shock is ready to do what it was made for. For this green algae, youll need to shock at least twice as much as the average dose. Make sure you use conveniently-packaged one pound bags to know youre using the right amount for your pool.

Just remember, as always, to shock your pool at dusk or night, so the sun doesnt burn down your pool shocks ability to work when you need it the most. And dont swim for at least eight hours afterwardcertainly not while your pool is still cloudy with shock. But youll be busy with this next step at first, anyway.

If your pool water is cloudy or a sick dark color, and youre looking for tips on how to turn it from green to blue, then this is the post for you!

For years, Ive had a love / hate relationship with my pool. I love it in the middle of the summer when its 100 degrees outside and I want a nice, cool place to float around all afternoon. But I hate it when I pull the cover off every spring only to find a puke-colored, army-green swamp where my crystal blue water used to be.

Believe me I know how desperate you feel when your pool looks like this and you fear it will never be suitable for human life ever again! And the amount of money you can spend only to literally accomplish nothing can be ridiculous!

Dont think so? Heres an embarrassing story: The first spring after we installed our pool, we pulled the cover off only to find the water had turned a terribly dark green color. Trip after trip to the pool supply store, we tried literally everything they recommended with no success. We even called a pool cleaning service to get a quote, but the price they asked was so insane we said forget it!

Thats why Ive written this article. After living in two different houses with swimming pools , please allow me to help you fight your pool water problem head-on by turning it from green to blue, and saving some money in the process!

    Total Alkalinity Too High

Pool water with a high total alkalinity is often associated with cloudiness. This is because it can cause an imbalance in the pH levels and lead to calcium scaling. Typically if your TA is higher than 200 ppm, youre at risk of a cloudy pool and just like imbalanced pH levels, your chlorine will be less effective.

Vacuum Waste Out Of Your Pool

Why A Pool Can Go Cloudy – One Reason To Consider

Your pools main skimmer is located at the top of your pool, helping to clear the upper portion of your pool water. It does not help to collect the cloudy particles situated at the bottom of your pool. Knowing this, we need to help your filter get to those particles.

Simply hook up your manual vacuum cleaner as if you were about to vacuum your pool, but instead of using it as per usual, leave the vacuum centred at the bottom of your pool and turn it upside down. Now your pool filter will be pulling water from the bottom of your swimming pool and releasing the clean filtered water at the top.

    Maintain A Balanced Pool Ph

Maintaining an optimal pool pH can also help combat green pool water. Thats because the pH level of your pool water can affect the efficacy of chlorine. If the pH of your pool is too low, chlorine will dissipate rapidly. This can lead to algae growth as well as discoloration caused by oxidation of metals.

If the pH of your pool is too high, the chlorine will lose its power to combat algae and kill off germs.

The ideal pool pH is approximately 7.4-7.6, although anywhere between 7.2-7.8 is considered acceptable.

Acidic Pool Water Can Ruin Your Pump And Filter

Have you ever seen what pouring acid on metal does even in a dilute form? It can break down any metal and greatly speed up the corrosion of it too. That is the very same thing that happens when your swimming pool water pH and alkalinity are to the low side. It creates water with acidic properties that will slowly eat away at your pump, filter and other pool parts that have metal parts in them.

Using baking soda to raise the pool water pH and alkalinity back up will once again neutralize the pool water and stop this damage from happening.

After reading this article, you should now know what to say when someone asks you what does baking soda do to a pool. It really is a must own chemical for those that own a swimming pool. It does a great job of helping to keep your pool water eye-friendly, equipment friendly, and crystal clear.

Is The Water Still Green Or Cloudy

    Why is my pool cloudy?

If the problem hasnt been solved, shock again. On the other hand, if the water is only cloudy, you can utilize a pool clarifier, which will help gather together small specks and form clogs, which will be easier to catch by the filter. If the issue persists, you may be dealing with other problems. Check the pH again. If it is too acidic, it may favor the presence of copper, which can alter the color.

Why Is My Swimming Pool Green

. Just so, is it safe to swim in a pool that is green?

Lack of Chlorine.Without chlorine, your pool water will quickly start to grow algae and turn to a green pool water. It should be noted that water with an algae bloom can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects, but more importantly, it is unsafe to swim in.

Similarly, how do you fix a green pool fast? Run your filter 24 hours a day and backwash 3 or 4 times a day for quickest results. Green or cloudy water will quickly clog a filter, therefore you may have to backwash your filter many times a day until the pool clears. THIS IS NORMAL ! Remember, you cannot over-backwash a pool filter.

Regarding this, why is my pool still green?

One of the main reasons why your water is still green even after you have shocked it is because of badly balanced pool chemicals. High levels of phosphates can cause algae to bloom! Try to lower your phosphate levels while continuing on putting chlorine to kill the algae.

Can you over shock a pool?

Start off by adding 3 or 4 gallons, and if you see no results overnight, add 3 or 4 more gallons the next day. Continue this process until you notice the water changing color to either cloudy white, light green or clear. YOU CANNOT OVER SHOCK A POOL ! The more you add, the quicker it will clear !
