Clearing Up A Green Swimming Pool On Opening

We suggest the following procedure:
1. Remove most of the large debris from the pool floor with a large leaf net . This will stir up the water, and may make your pool look much worse temporarily, but the stirred up debris will settle within a few hours. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO VACUUM THE POOL IF YOU CANNOT SEE THE BOTTOM OF IT OR IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF DEBRIS ON THE BOTTOM. YOU MAY CLOG YOUR SKIMMER, FILTER OR UNDERGROUND PIPES.
2. Adjust the pH and Alkalinity levels of the water using pH Plus , pH Minus and Alkalinity adjustment . These levels must be within the proper ranges or the water may not clear completely.
3. Shock the pool. This means chlorinating the water to kill off any bacteria and algae. If your pool is very dirty, it may need MANY gallons of liquid chlorine over a period of days before the water clears.

Let The Filter Do The Work
Shocking your pool removes exactly zero algae. What it does is kill it, so you can then let the filter clean it out. No matter what type of filter you use, be it a cartridge, sand, or diatomaceous earth youll need to clean it out several times while it clears the water.
If you have a DE filter, you need to backwash it before you start the process, and add fresh DE.
Allow the filter to run for at least 24 hours, after the treatment. Then, you can scrub the pool when you clean the filter, and then let it run again. You are going to repeat that process until the pool is clear.

Algae Meet Pool Shock
Other sources might tell you that if you have algae, you need to use pool shock. And theyre right: its pool shock thatll do most of the work to do the actual killing. But without these other steps, your shock wont work as well, and it certainly wont be enough to take care of your algae problem in any permanent way.
Since youve scrubbed and vacuumed your pool and tested your water balance, your pool shock is ready to do what it was made for. For this green algae, youll need to shock at least twice as much as the average dose. Make sure you use conveniently-packaged one pound bags to know youre using the right amount for your pool.

Pool water with a high total alkalinity is often associated with cloudiness. This is because it can cause an imbalance in the pH levels and lead to calcium scaling. Typically if your TA is higher than 200 ppm, youre at risk of a cloudy pool and just like imbalanced pH levels, your chlorine will be less effective.
Vacuum Waste Out Of Your Pool
Your pools main skimmer is located at the top of your pool, helping to clear the upper portion of your pool water. It does not help to collect the cloudy particles situated at the bottom of your pool. Knowing this, we need to help your filter get to those particles.
Simply hook up your manual vacuum cleaner as if you were about to vacuum your pool, but instead of using it as per usual, leave the vacuum centred at the bottom of your pool and turn it upside down. Now your pool filter will be pulling water from the bottom of your swimming pool and releasing the clean filtered water at the top.

Maintaining an optimal pool pH can also help combat green pool water. Thats because the pH level of your pool water can affect the efficacy of chlorine. If the pH of your pool is too low, chlorine will dissipate rapidly. This can lead to algae growth as well as discoloration caused by oxidation of metals.
If the pH of your pool is too high, the chlorine will lose its power to combat algae and kill off germs.
The ideal pool pH is approximately 7.4-7.6, although anywhere between 7.2-7.8 is considered acceptable.
