How Long Does It Take Solar To Heat Pool
The answer to this depends on the size of your pool obviously.
Here is how it worked for us
Our pool is 20K Gallons. We ran the two coils in tandem for about 3 days during peak sunlight time .
The temperatures during the day went up to about 84F. At the end of the third day, the overall water temperature was about 78F good enough to swim in!
The time it takes the pool to heat up also depends on the flow rate of the water going through the coil .
The faster the flow, the less time water has to heat up in the coil.
To show up exactly what that means, we conducted an experiment throughout the day .
Below is a chart of how the water temperature changes depending on the flow rate for one and two coils.
Here is what the chart tells us
- Two coils get you a higher temperature increase for the same flow of water
- As you increase the flow rate, the temperature increase is lower.

Loose Packed Vs Tight Packed
So we already spoke about this, but we thought we might highlight the differences. The choice of design you go with is going to dependent really on the amount of area you have available to mount on. Loose packed coils will take twice the area of tight packed coils. Tight packed coils are more efficient per m² meter of collector but if you have the room, loose spaced coils will provide more bang for your buck/dollar – collecting approx 60%* more energy per meter length of poly piping, hope that makes sense. We’ll leave it to you to decide which is optimal for your setup.
*Note, this 60% will depend on the surface pipes are installed on. If the surface is a dark AND conducting sink like say concrete for example then expect much less.

How Much Does It Cost To Buy Homemade Solar Water Heater Materials
Buying all new parts for this solar water heating system might cost around $300 or $400, but there are many ways to modify the design to incorporate salvaged parts or for enhancing the system. For longevity and durability, the parts should be rated for UV exposure and high temperatures. Most plastic will start to deform above 140°F, and a typical garden hose will not hold its shape much over 100°F.
The parts list includes recommended materials and temperature ratings. Use materials that can withstand temperatures up to 180°F, such as metal, CPVC, or polypropylene fittings, as well as high-temperature water hose material, such as EPDM rubber. We were really excited about the pool in our backyard when we bought the house.
We soon realized that we could only use it for about 3 to 3-½ months of the year.
It was especially frustrating in spring and fall when the daytime temperatures were 90-100F but the water temperature was around 65F!
So we decided to look into options for heating the pool.

We researched many designs and tried a few and came up with a system that works.

A Unique Open Flow Solar Pool Heating Collector
Another interesting design idea can be found on builditsolar. This pool heater uses corrugated metal roofing as an absorber which can work out great if you already have some leftover materials from other projects. Alternative, you can get everything from the local hardware store without spending a fortune. The way this works is by having water from the pool pumped to a header along the top of the collector. Small trickles of water head towards the bottom of the collector into a channel that carries it back into the pool.
Total Poly Tube Area Your Collector Will Take Up
Now while we’re on the subject of area, we need to show you the area you’re going to be looking at – because ummm it’s extensive with poly tubes. These systems will require much greater areas as compared to commercial systems. So firstly, let’s work out the packing fraction of a tight packed hypothetical coil. The picture shown is the tightest of the tight pack configurations, and it still only fills about a 0.78 x L x W – 0.13 x L x W ~ 0.65 fraction of the square . So this only fills about 65% of the space of say a rectangular OKU panel. In other words the grossarea of tight packed poly tubes will take up about 1/0.65 = 1.54 x the grossarea of OKU panels, and since a loose spaced design takes 1.04/0.65 =1.6 x the area of a tight packed design to produce the same heat, a loose spaced design takes 1.54 x 1.6 = 2.5 x the square area of OKU panels to produce the same energy. Keep this in mind as even conventional pool collectors do tend to take a lot of space, for example in the pool heating industry 2/3rds OKU panel pool coverage is a common sizing. If you wanted to do this with a loose spaced design you’d need an area 2.5 x .667 = 1.667 x the size of the pool’s water area . However, you would get a decent 4°C-10°C temperature boost at this sizing, depending on wind exposure and/or if you use a pool cover. If you wanted that much heating with a tight packed design you’d need 100% coverage or 1 x your pools water area.

Using A Childs Toy And Garbage Bag For Diy Pool Heater
This is a very low budget solution for heating your pool on colder evenings. All you need is hula hoops, garbage bags and pool noodles plus a few other household items like scissors and tape. The important thing to remember is that the garbage bag has to be black. If you use any other color, it will not absorb the suns heat and your pool water will remain cold.

Dont let your pipe be left in clusters, arrange the pipes coiled adequately in a spiral shape. You can also keep a blackboard beneath the spirally rolled pipe on the top of the roof to further escalate the heating effect. How Warm Can A Solar Pool Heater Get
When we started exploring solar pool heaters, I was skeptical about how well it would be able to heat up the pool.
With ONE coil
After we made the first coil, on a 80F day, we let it run for about an hour and we tested it.
- Pool water temperature 70F
- Solar heated water temperature 90F
WITH TWO coils
Then we added another coil and on a day with similar temperatures, here is what we found
- Pool water temperature 70F
- Solar heated water temperature 110F
So, you can see that a solar pool heater can get pretty warm! It was able to raise the temperature of the water by 20-40F depending on the length of the hose.
