How To Maintain A Cement Inground Pool

Pressure Washing Tips: Cleaning Pool Concrete | Pressure Washer TV

A cement inground pool is basically just a large hole dug into the ground with a concrete shell to contain water. A vinyl lining is permanently attached to the concrete shell to give the inside of the pool a smooth feel. The operation of an inground concrete pool is no different than that of an above-ground pool: Both have a filtration system that circulates the water and keeps it clean and free from debris. Inground pools require routine maintenance, surface cleaning, and chemical additives to stay in good operating condition.

1

Use a pool skimmer to remove any floating debris from the surface of the water.

2

Clean the sides of the pool by scrubbing them with a plastic-bristle pool brush. Work your way around the entire pool moving the brush in a circular motion.

3

Wait 10 minutes after scrubbing the sides of the pool for any dirt or small particles to settle on the bottom of the pool. Vacuum the bottom of the pool by slowly moving a pool vacuum across it. Move the pool vacuum very slowly and in straight lines to avoid stirring up any dirt or debris settled on the bottom of the pool. Brushing and vacuuming should be performed weekly to keep the pool clean.

4

Add the correct amount of algaecide to the pool once a week. The typical algaecide dosage is 3 oz. per 10,000 gallons of water, but refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact amount.

5

6

7

Clean out any filtration traps around the pool at least once a week.

Test And Balance The Water

Make sure the chemical balance of your pool water is at its optimal level. This way, youll know precisely how much pool shock to use. Use either a liquid test kit or test strips. Dont worry about calcium hardnessfocus on pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer.

Heres where the levels should be:

  • alkalinity: 100 ppm to 150 ppm
  • pH: 7.4 to 7.6
  • chlorine: 1 ppm to 3 ppm

How to Raise pH in Pool

If you find out the pH level of your pool is low, there are a couple of things you can do to raise it:

  • Add Soda ASH: Soda ash or sodium bicarbonate have lots of alkalinity, easily dissolve in water, and dont leave much of a trace. Adding either of them will decrease acidity and raise pH levels of your pool water.
  • Aerate The Water: This can be done by pointing water jets towards the pool surface, by turning on water features, or adding aeration pipes. However, doing this is a lengthy process, and can take days.

How To Acid Wash A Concrete Pool

STEP 1: DRAIN & CLEAN With a main drain in the pool and a multiport valve on the filter, you can drain most of the pool water with your filter pump, but it will lose prime with 1-3 feet of water still in the deep end. You can use a submersible pump to finish the job, like the Water Wizard, which fits in a main drain pot. For bad pool clean-ups however, go to your local rental shop at 7 am, and rent a 2 or 3 Trash Pump, with a 20 long suction hose, to reach the main drain, and as much discharge hose as you need, 50 or 100 usually. Stop at the gas station and fill up a gas can for refueling.

As you drain the pool, wash it down to remove all algae and leaves. If you let the algae dry on the surface, it becomes twice as difficult to remove. Spray the surface with a water nozzle as the water level drops, before it dries into a baked-on finish. When all of the water is removed, bag up all leaves and debris in the pool’s bottom. Rinse again, remove the main drain cover so that you can pump out all of the water, to begin acid washing the bowl, or the area around the main drain.

When the pool is clean and completely empty, you can begin to acid wash the plaster, in the deep end. Put on protective clothing and rubber boots, goggles and wear a breathing mask designed for acid fumes.

How To Clean Concrete

JoyfulNoise said:Bleach and trisodium phosphate will get rid of mildew/mold/algae. You apply it using a bucket and scrub brush, let it sit and then rinse it. If the power washer left your concrete rough, then the pressure was way too high and/or the wrong fan tip was on the wand. They sell rotary spray heads that you can hook up to a power washer that are designed for hard surface cleaning. You may be able to rent one.

JoyfulNoise said:Its also a good idea to use soft water if you have it available. Calcium will react with the TSP and form insoluble phosphates and carbonates which can leave behind a powdery residue. Using soft water would eliminate that. Rinse the area you treat really well. A hose with a good strong spray should be fine but if use a power washer then make sure you dial down the pressure and use the widest fan tip you have available.

How To Clean Your Pool Deck

To clean a pool deck, you’ll need standard household bleach, dish soap, an exterior scrub brush meant for concrete, a bucket, and lots of water. Follow these steps for a quick clean:

  • Fill the bucket with water and add a cup of bleach and a squirt of the dish soap. Wear gloves or use the handle of the scrub brush to mix together these materials.
  • Spread the solution over the pool deck. Mix additional buckets of bleach and soap as needed, to cover your entire deck.
  • Use the scrub brush and brush the deck thoroughly. Be sure to take extra time over the expansion joints, or the indented trenches between sections of concrete, as dirt and grime tend to settle into these areas.
  • After scrubbing the entire deck, use a pressure washer or garden hose with a pressure nozzle and rinse the water thoroughly.

To ensure you don’t damage your property’s lawn or contaminate the pool’s water, rinse the soapy solution toward the home’s driveway and into the street. Note, too, that you don’t want to use too much bleach or soap in this mixture. These materials need to dissolve completely in the water, or they might leave a residue on the pool deck. Use even less bleach on a timber deck, to avoid drying the wood and leaving unsightly marks and spots.

Pour the acid over your patio and let it sit there for about ten minutes, making sure to rinse away the acid before it dries. Finish by sprinkling baking soda to neutralize any remaining acid.

Use A Sealant To Protect Your Concrete

Using a sealant is beneficial for any concrete surface, but is especially important for pool deck surfaces because of the increased exposure to water and other elements. Unprotected concrete stains easily and is prone to surface damage and physical deterioration.

Nature can cause stains from moss, mold, algae, leaves or simply a buildup of deeply seated dirt. Then there are the typical man-made stains that can occur from contaminants like oil and fertilizer. Regardless of the cause of the stain, these ugly spots and patches drastically affect how concrete looks and the overall appearance of the property.

Surface pitting and physical deterioration – or spalling – is another common problem where one or many areas of the concrete surface are peeling or flaking away. Spalling is created – and accelerated – with the freeze/thaw cycle. Moisture is absorbed into the concrete and, as temperatures drop, freezes and expands, breaking the walls of the concrete surface pores. Once that damage occurs, the surface area exposed to future damage increases – meaning the effects of the freeze/thaw cycle worsen exponentially every year.

Using a concrete sealant goes hand-in-hand with pressure washing, and should be part of your annual maintenance regiment – whether as a DIY project or hiring a contractor. Not only will you instantly improve the beauty of your pool deck, but you’ll help protect and extend the lifespan of your concrete by controlling water seepage and preventing damage.

How Often To Clean A Concrete Pool Deck

Proper pool deck maintenance requires a very thorough clean once or twice a yearthe frequency of major cleans depends on several factors such as:

  • How often its used.
  • Whether it gets of lots of debris from nearby trees and plants.
  • If dirt is often tracked onto its surface.
  • Frequency of animals leaving their droppings on the deck.

Youll have a sense for how often you need to clean it based on how it looks and how difficult it is to do your thorough cleanings.
