Anyone know if you can keep that until next summer or will the chemicals be useless?

Yes it will keep, so stock up!

A Few Things To Consider If Youre Planning To Buy An Above Ground Pool Like Our Costco Pool:

1. The box is HUUUGE!;

Its almost as tall as me and its at least 3 wide on all sides.;

We needed to fold down all the seats in our van and have someone at Costco help us load it.

2. The disassembled pool will take up a large amount of space in your garage .;

We know people who leave their pool up all winter , but we always take it down. And yes, the disassembled pool takes up a decent amount of floor space, even when its folded up.

We store it in our extra garage, so if you dont have a large amount of extra garage or shed space to store this pool, you might choose to leave your pool up all year long .;;

3. Check your city ordinances and codes to make sure youre putting the pool in an appropriate location.;

We had restrictions as to how close our swimming pool could be to another structure and to our lot-line . Definitely check into this before you spend time preparing the ground.;

4. Plan to invest in a few extras.;

Our Costco pool came with everything we needed for installation .

However, we have purchased a few hundred dollars worth of extras over the years plus all the chemicals .

5. Think twice before buying used.;

Im almost always a fan of buying used versus new. However, I highly caution you against buying a used Bestway pool from Costco .;

For starters, these inexpensive pools really arent made to last all that long 3-5 years at the most. The pumps just dont last.

6. Realize you get what you pay for.;

Thoughts On Clorox Tabs 8799 For 40 Lbs 80 Tabs

They will likely go on sale next month . That said, Costco changed what they sell to these last year and they were not great for me. They disintegrated 10x faster than any previous ones and skyrocketed my CYA . I won’t buy this one again.

Edit: English

skyrocketed my CYA

Same happened with me. Ended up having to pump out some water and refill from the tap to get it under control.

Theres a national shortage rn one of the major chemical factories that produces trichlor had a fire

So what brand of chlorine tabs are considered quality?

Anything that is 99% trichlor on the ingredient list.

I primarily use tabs, stabilized tabs when cya is low, then I switch to non-stabilized tabs. Liquid chlorine is to much of a pita, I don’t have the time to add chlorine daily, nor do I feel like having to do so. I just use tabs through an inline dispenser, only have to deal with pool stuff once a week that way vs daily hassle.

Im a noob. What are unstabilized tabs? Is there a brand or formula? We have a feeder system and trichlor constantly raises the CYA.

Literal trash. They melt super fast, increasing your stabilizer and dropping your pH. Each tab has a pH of 3 and adds 1-2 CyA to your water. Not worth destroying your water for a couple bucks

This further explains the PH issue I had last year

Enjoy your CYA levels unless you plan to drain your pool every season. Learned that the hard way and a few semi trailers of water later.

Costco. Do you use this brand?

General Maintenance Tips For Above

1. Be prepared for DAILY Maintenance

Dave does almost all the pool maintenance which I thank him for regularly. Its not a difficult job, but it DOES require diligently checking on things every day in order to keep the water clean.;

He adds chlorine EVERY day usually right away in the morning when he opens the pool.;

He also adds a stabilizer to the water when we open the pool in the spring. Then he shocks the water.;

From then on, he shocks the pool every other week and uses an algaecide on opposite weeks.;

We use our pool skimmer every time we swim and Dave vacuums the pool roughly once a week.

NOTE: if you plan to be gone a lot over the summer, you may want to think twice before setting up a Costco pool. The pumps are small, and without daily care, you might just come home to a nasty green pool!;

2. Test the Water Regularly:;

Dave uses water test strips to test the water each day.

Theyre not perfect but they give a pretty good idea of the water quality.

Dave also brings water to a local pool store for testing once a week. They do it for free and tell him exactly what he needs to do to the water.

3. Monitor Your Pump

You will need to run your pump with the filter regularly this is important for the health of the water.;;

That said, you should also monitor your pump each day so you know what your pump can handle.;

He then runs the pump WITH the filter again for a couple of hours in the evening and turns it off before we go to bed.;

4. Get a Solar Cover and/or Solar Heater

How To Disassemble And Winterize An Above

We know people who leave their steel-frame pools assembled all winter, but as I mentioned above, we have always chosen to take ours down.

Heres how we winterize our pool:

1. Let the Chlorine Evaporate

When were finished with the pool for the year , we let the water sit for 7-10 days so the chlorine evaporates. Yes, it will turn green!

2. Drain as much water as you can with a hose.;

Simply connect a garden hose to the drain to get most of the water out into the street .

3. Use a SubPump to get all the water out.

Once the water was below the drain hole, we used a mini sub-pump to get the rest of the water out.

4. Clean the inside of the liner.;

We clean our pool liner it with vinegar spray and our deck scrub brush .

5. Suck up any last bits of water or debris.

We used our shop vac to get any last little bits of water out and then let it sit in the sunshine for a few hours to TOTALLY DRY.;

6. Disassemble the pool frame:;

Once the liner was completely clean and dry, we disassembled the pool.

In full disclosure, we had a really hard time getting the steel frame apart specifically removing the steel poles from the pool perimeter .

After a lengthy struggle with this, we decided to keep the long sides of the pool liner connected to the frame, and just took the curved ends and the legs off.

If we were to assemble a pool like this again, we probably would rub Vaseline or another type of lubricant over the poles before attaching the liner.

7. Bring the pump inside.;

Thoughts On Costco Chlorine Tablets Clorox Pool & Spa Xtra Blue

  • Elijah G Chagollasays:

    Yes its true tabs have stabilizer, buts its so minuscule that if you regularly use your tablets you wont need to drain for at least 3-4 years which in my opinion is long enough to go with the same water regardless of the cya.

  • Hey Joanne, its smart to do around 1lb of shock per 10k gal of water once a week. You would also want to do abt 2-3 tabs once a week as well. As tabs just maintain the level while shock is what actually increases the level so that the tabs can keep it maintained.

  • I recently tried to pickup chlorine tablets at my local Costco and learned the shortage is related to a fire at the plant that makes the tabs. True or not I dont know.

    While hunting for a replacement a Google search turned up comments on a pool forum where the pros hang out. Seems the consensus is you dont want to use to chlorine tabs and you especially dont want to use a blue pool product as that is code word for copper.

    Tabs have stabilizers that will raise your CYA levels. This helps chlorine last but throws the chemical balance off in the pool such that it is often necessary to drain and refill the pool to remedy.

    Copper is a problematic heavy metal to add to pools. I personally dont want copper in my pool. Do your own research from these pointers, but Im getting off the Clorox Blue train now.

    Can you shock your pool during the day?

    Shock your pool late in the evening or at night, when the sun is down, to make sure free chlorine will stay in your water longer. Ultraviolet rays from direct sunlight greatly reduces free chlorine levels, so shocking during the day will not be very effective.

    Maintaining Proper Chlorine Levels

    Chlorine shortage causing major issues for pool owners

    Test Your Water

    How often you should test and balance your pool water can vary based on how often you use it, and is also dependent on a number of other variables. Its important to remember that for chlorine and pH, you should usually test your pool 2-3x’s times a week. That may sound like a lot, but water balance is vital for your pools health and it’s swimmers. When your pool is out of balance, your sanitizers can be less effective, the water can cause irritation to the skin and eyes and can even damage the pools surfaces, structure, or equipment.

    Shock Weekly

    In ideal circumstances, shocking your pool just once a week will keep it looking clean and clear. However, any heavy rainfall, signs of algae, use by lots of swimmers, or periods of very sunny weather can deplete free chlorine levels which means an extra dose of; shock is needed. Sundown is the optimum time to shock treat to prevent unnecessary loss of chlorine due to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. This leaves more chlorine to restore water clarity. .

    Overstabilization: What is it?

    While small levels of cyanuric acid serve an important purpose in protecting chlorine from sunlight degradation, too much can cause problems. Over-stabilization is the buildup of cyanuric acid in swimming pool water resulting from the use of stabilized sanitizers and stabilized shock products.; It significantly decreases the effectiveness of chlorine in killing germs, bacteria and algae.

This years model at Costco is the same giant size as last years but has a different looking exterior. It looks like its supposed to replicate the look of wood paneling on the outside of the pool walls. There wasnt a display set up so its hard to know how good that would look in real life. Will Bleach Raise Free Chlorine

    To raise the free chlorine by 1 ppm, I add about 40 ounces of an 8.3 percent bleach solution, which is about a third of a jug of bleach. You can scale up and down accordingly; if you need to raise the free chlorine by 2 ppm you would add about 80 ounces. You should add the chlorine just after the sun sets.

    Can I Use Baking Soda Instead Of Chlorine In My Pool

    costco

    Most people know that chlorine is an important chemical in keeping pool water safe for swimming. But adding too much chlorine can lower your pools pH as well as its total alkalinity. This handy tool for pools is none other than Arm & Hammer baking soda, although youll need pounds of it rather than a pinch.

    Quick Tips To Assemble Your Costco Swimming Pool:

    1. Read ALL instructions and make sure you have all pieces before getting started.;

    Honestly, Dave and I were very unimpressed and frustrated with the instructions that came with this Bestway Pool but they were still valuable because they listed all the parts and pieces, so we could make sure we werent missing anything before we started.;

    We simply searched YouTube for our exact pool model and learned how to install it that way.

    We used this video to help us set up the pool. Its the EXACT same Bestway pool we have, and it was published the same week we initially set up our pool!;

    Heres another Costco pool set-up video showing a newer version of our swimming pool !

    2. Take your time on the set-up and maybe recruit some helpers!;

    The first time we set up our pool, my brother-in-law and his brother both came to help. They had experience with pool set-ups so it was very nice to have them around.;

    The second time we set it up the pool, Dave and I did it ourselves in less than an hour.;

    Either way, just take your time and dont rush the process. Its fairly simple but if you mess up, you might need to drain the water and start over again!;

    3. Make sure your ground is very level.;

    You MUST make sure the ground under your pool is VERY LEVEL otherwise, the legs wont be as strongly supported and your pool will lean in.;

    A little bit of leaning is OK, but if the pool is very unlevel, it puts extra strain on one side and could cause the pool liner to stretch and actually break
