How Many Btus Do I Need For A 10000 Gallon Pool

How To: Size a Gas Heater for Your Swimming Pool

Or approximately 100K BTUs for every 10,000 gallons of pool water. For inground pools less than 20,000 gallons, small gas heaters like the Raypak 206K BTU output are suitable. Pools up to 30,000 gallons should look at the Pentair 300K BTU or higher, and pools over 50,000 gallons should look at the Hayward 500K BTU.

Is 40000 Btu Good For A Patio Heater

Patio heaters that are freestanding have an output of 40,000 BTUs per hour on average. This can heat a room with a circumference of 20 feet, which can accommodate a medium-sized gathering. If you want to heat a room with a circumference of 10 feet or less, get a unit with an output of 20,000 BTUs per hour. This can be used for small gatherings.

The Customers Ideal Water Temperature

You need to identify what temperature your customers prefer to swim at .

This establishes what performance you expect your heater to maintain under different environmental conditions. For example, if a pool has an attached hot tub, the maximum water temperature for calculating Btu requirements would be as high as 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

Should I Turn My Pool Heater Off At Night

How To Figure Out How Many BTUs You Need In Your A/C

There are almost as many opinions on this subject as there are pool heaters. For families that use their pool only intermittently, the best option is to leave the pool heater turned off until the day before you plan to swim. This will keep maintenance and energy costs low.

For daily pool users, turning the thermostat down a couple of degrees, instead of turning the heater off overnight, tends to be best for saving energy in most situations.

    Sizing Your Pool Heater

When I first started working in the pool industry, one of the areas I always tried to avoid was helping customers size their pool heaters. Im not sure what made me uncomfortable about sizing heaters but I avoided it like the plague. One thing I did know was that when it came down to heaters and heat pumps, the bigger the better. Although true, I learned that some pool owners actually prefer efficiency over size. Eventually, I realized that my bigger is better line wasnt always the best advice for every pool set up and sooner, rather than later, Id have to learn how to size a heater for a pool owner.

    So, exactly how do you size a heater for your pool? Lets do this together.;

Calculate your pool sq. footage first.

What Size Pool Heater Do I Need?If you own a pool then its important that you purchase the right size because lets be honest, pool heaters are not cheap and choosing the wrong size will definitely ruin your day. As with most things, education is the key and knowing all the facts will ensure you make the right decision when it comes to choose your pool heater.

Now, lets have a look at what factors you need to consider when it comes to swimming pool sizes.

    Sizing A Gas Pool Heater

You should have a trained pool professional perform a proper sizing analysis for your specific pool to determine pool heater size.

Sizing a gas pool heater involves many factors. Basically, a heater is sized according to the surface area of the pool and the difference between the pool and the average air temperatures. Other factors also affect the heating load for outdoor pools, such as wind exposure, humidity levels, and cool night temperatures. Therefore, pools located in areas with higher average wind speeds at the pool surface, lower humidity, and cool nights will require a larger heater.

Gas pool heaters are rated by Btu output. Outputs range from 75,000 Btu to 450,000 Btu.

To calculate an approximate heater size for an outdoor pool, follow these steps:

  • Determine your desired pool temperature.
  • Determine the average temperature for the coldest month of pool use.
  • Subtract the average temperature for the coldest month from the desired pool temperature. This will give you the;temperature rise;needed.
  • Calculate the pool surface area in square feet.
  • Use the following formula to determine the Btu/hour output requirement of the heater:
  • Pool Area x Temperature Rise x 12

This formula is based on 1º to 1-1/4ºF temperature rise per hour and a 3-1/2 mile per hour average wind at the pool surface. For a 1-1/2ºF rise multiply by 1.5. For a 2ºF rise multiply by 2.0.

Radiant Heat How Much BTU Do I Need?

Raypak has a gas heater calculator that configures your city and state with your desired water temperature, average air temperature, and desired temperature rise. Raypaks online calculator allows pool owners to input specific information about their pool and location and configure what size heater is best, not only for their pool but taking your physical location into consideration as well.

    View the calculator here.

The calculator also can calculate the cost of an electric heat pump versus direct fire propane or natural gas heaters. ;This tool allows customers to compare energy costs by showing their regions average temperatures and the cost to heat the water to your desired temperature, broken down for each month of the year. Its a really useful tool I use to explain to pool owners the costs of heating their water and a realistic plan for which months they might want to close the pool, if at all. Once you review the different options you will understand that heat pumps are more efficient in milder climates where there is less temperature increase required. And propane is more expensive than natural gas. I will review solar and geothermal options in another article. If you prefer to look at averages vs. using this calculator, I wrote a guide on average pool heater costs by type that should help. What Size Pool Heater Do I Need For A 24 Foot Round Pool

    Pool Size
Up To 10,000 Gallons Up To 21′ Round or 15′ x 26′ Oval 50,000 BTU
    Up To 13,000 Gallons Up To 24Round or 15′ x 30′ Oval 50,000 BTU
Up To 17,000 Gallons Up To 27′ Round or 18′ x 33′ Oval 65,000 BTU

Therefore, the minimum size heater that is recommended for a 15 x 30 pool is 150,000 BTUs. Keep in mind, this is simply the recommended minimum size. Meaning, I wouldn’t go lower but I might need to go a little higher. When it comes to gas heaters, you always want to oversize the unit.

Subsequently, question is, how much does it cost to run a pool heater per month? For a typical size 400,000 BTU pool heater, that’s 4 therms per hour. Currently, natural gas runs about $1.50 per therm near Tampa. The average cost to heat a pool for one hour on natural gas is around $ 7.00. To heat, an average pool with no solar cover typically takes 8-14 hours.

Also question is, how do you size a natural gas pool heater?

For an average 15′ x 30′ pool , a 300K BTU heater would raise your pool temperature 2 degrees per hour; a 400K BTU heater, 2.7 degrees per hour. For a 20′ x 30′ pool the temperature rise for 300K and 400K heaters would be 1.5 and 2 degrees respectively.

Can a pool heater be too big?

How To Size A Pool Heater

Whenever I talk to another pool professional about calculating heater size, I usually see their eyes glaze over. Not that sizing a pool heater is super difficult, but if you want to do it right, you need to do some calculations first.

Similar to pumps, sizing heaters isnt usually calculated. Its usually a matter of picking a model youve used in similar applications. For example, if youre working on a pool with an attached hot tub, most installers would suggest a 400,000-Btu heater, which is the largest available in most residential applications.

In that case, a pro might not feel he or she needs to run the calculations because they know the attached hot tub, circulated at pool temperature, will need to be heated before use. And the higher the Btu output of the heater, the faster the heater will raise the water from pool temperature to spa temperature.

Nobody wants to turn on their spa two hours in advance just for it to warm up. With a giant 400,000-Btu heater, an average 8-by-8-foot spa could go from 80 degrees up to 104 degrees in about an hour.

Similarly, when a homeowner asks what size heater they should use, most installers just pick their favorite heater that is between 200,000 and 350,000 Btu, knowing from experience that it will work on a pool approximately the size of the one in question.

Why Is Pool Heater Sizing Important

Weve all heard the saying bigger is better. When it comes to gas pool heaters, this is mostly true. However, it really depends on your pool size, and budget.

Generally speaking, the amount of BTUs required to heat pool water will be the same, no matter the size of the heater. But a larger one will work quicker than a smaller heater, especially if you have a large body of water youre warming.

    Note: BTU is a unit of measurement that measures thermal energy. Gas pool heaters are rated for BTU input/output and range from 100,000 400,000 BTUs.;

Current pool heaters are 85% to 90% efficient. This means if you have a heater with an input of 400,000 BTUs, youll be getting 340,000 BTUs of output based on 85% efficiency, though this drops over time due to normal wear and tear. Understanding BTUs helps you determine the necessary heater size for the volume of water in your pool.

A smaller heater means youll have to run it longer, which means youll be paying more in operational costs. But once it reaches the desired temperature, it can easily maintain it.

When it comes to minimum size, the general rule is 1 BTU will raise 1lb. of water by 1 degree Fahrenheit. You can then determine the minimum BTU size of the heater you require when heating your pool by X amount of degrees.

Advantages Of Using A Pool Heat Pump

How Much BTU Heat Do I Need? Try This Formula

The American Red Cross recommends maintaining a swimming pool temperature of 78 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Pool temperature is continuously influenced by wind, altitude and shading. The benefits of maintaining a swimming pool at the correct temperature extend beyond simply comfort. Temperature swings affect pool chemistry and the health of the water. The formula for sizing a gas heater determines the heater’s British thermal unit output per hour required to heat the pool to the desired temperature in 24 hours.

    1

Figure the surface area of a typical rectangular residential pool by multiplying the length in feet times the width in feet.

    2

Consult an online weather data service to find the average temperature of the coldest month the pool will be used . These figures are commonly available by zip code. Subtract that temperature from the desired temperature between 78 to 82 degrees to arrive at the temperature rise.

    3

Multiply the surface area of the pool by the temperature rise. Multiply that result by 12 to arrive at the required Btu-per-hour output of the heater. This figure represents the heater output necessary to heat the pool to the desired temperature in 24 hours, based on an average wind velocity of 3.5 mph.

Sizing A Swimming Pool Heat Pump

    Pin on Bellaire Fixtures

Pool heat pumps are typically matched to the number of gallons in your pool. If you dont know or arent sure how many gallons you have, measure your pool, and use this pool volume calculator tool.

Some heat pump manufacturers dont list the gallons, but list their heaters in terms of the BTU output. Most models are in the range of 50K BTUs to 125K BTUs.

50K BTU heat pumps are meant for small pools, or aboveground pools, under 12,000 gallons. It will work on larger pools, but heating will be slow and total temperature rise may not be what you desire.

Youll need to consider pool size and the desired temperature change when selecting a heat pump for your swimming pool. Other factors such as the average air temperature, humidity and wind speeds will also influence a heat pumps ability to warm the pool water. Figuring on a temperature increase of 1-1.25 degrees per hour, you can use the following equation to get an approximate heat pump BTU requirement:

    x x 12 =

For example, well use a rectangular pool 14 ft. wide by 28 ft. long. During the coldest month of use, the pool owner wants to increase the water temperature by around 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

    x 20 x 12 = 94,000+ BTU

If you happen to know the volume of your pool in gallons, you can also follow this general guideline for heat pump BTUs:

    Pool Volume
    25,000 gal. 140,000 BTU
