Why Is There A Chlorine Shortage Right Now
Blame two factors for the chlorine shortage, says CNBC. One, unsurprisingly, is COVID-19: Last summer, sales for swimming pools skyrocketed as people all over the planet stayed home during the pandemic, leading to an increased demand for prepared chlorine products.
But the other cause is more surprising: In August 2020, a chlorine plant just outside Lake Charles, Louisianaresponsible for making a bulk of the U.S.s chlorine tabletsburned down in the wake of Hurricane Laura, putting a huge dent in the production of chlorine tablets.
The BioLab facility will reopen in 2022, but in the meantime, its absence leaves just two domestic manufacturers of chlorine tablets: Occidental Petroleum and Clearon Corp. Even if both manufacturers increase production, theyd have to ramp up roughly 50 percent each to fill in the gap during the chlorine shortage.
Experts say the chlorine shortage will cause empty shelves in stores and extreme markups, which, because of the seasonal nature of pool usage, is about to come as a rude awakening to many outdoor pool owners. The financial services company IHS Markit says chlorine prices are expected to spike 70 percent this summer, compared to 2020.
If your average 50-pound bucket of chlorine used to cost $75 to $85, it now costs $140 and is expected to hit $158 in the near future, Scotty Heer, the owner of the Las Vegas-based Scottys Pool Service, told CNBC.

Last week’s scorching heat wave in the Northeast was the latest boost for an increasingly tight pool chemicals market, which include chlorinated isocyanurates and calcium hypochlorite. “We’ve had a good start to the season,” says Ron Schuh, executive vice-president of performance products division for Occidental Chemical Corporation. “This year’s pool season is very strong,” adds John Stiglmeier, Jr., president of Aqua Clear Industries LLC.
Traditionally, the pool season starts in the California-Arizona region during the fourth quarter of the preceding year. It then extends across the South and, as the weather warms, advances to the Northeast. After experiencing a slow first quarter, the California-Arizona region has picked up, and since mid-May, the Northeast and Midwest regions have been warm and dry. The warm dry weather, in conjunction with the overall growth of the pool market, has generated strong demand for the pool chemicals industry, and the business is growing at a 3 to 5 percent annual rate, according to OxyChem’s Mr. Schuh.
In past years, the pool chemicals market faced price erosion as supply outweighed demand. Producers say the market may now be stabilizing. “There has been a tremendous amount of gross profit erosion which could be turning around,” a producer notes.
The pool chemicals industry is becoming increasingly integrated vertically. The latest example occurred last February when OxyChem formed a joint venture with Aqua Clear.

The first step is using the Sustain Summer Shield. You use Summer Shield once a season and this product is your chlorine extender. One quart of this product will treat 10,000 gallons of water. Summer Shield protects the water throughout the season if the chlorine level were to suddenly drop to maintain water clarity. After this initial dosage at the beginning of the season, you will not use this product until you open up next season.
The next step is to use the Sustain 3-inch Blue Calcium Hypochlorite Tablets. One tablet will treat 10,000 gallons of water and contains 68% of available chlorine. This blue bucket full of tablets comes with an adjustable skimmer dispenser. Only once a week you treat your water with the correct amount of these 3-inch tablets directly in your skimmer inside of the skimmer dispenser cup.
The final step is to use the Sustain ¾-inch Shield Energizer Tablets. These little tablets perform two duties.
