When To Replace A Vinyl Pool Liner

Overlap replacement liner over an intex pool 18×48

Its difficult to say exactly how long a pool liner will last, but most have a life expectancy between 15 and 20 years. Reasons vary as to why you might need to replace the liner instead of just having a patch job done but, in any case, be sure to check your liner regularly to ensure you don’t lose too much water or cause additional damage.

Here are four reasons to replace your liner:

Put The Patch On Your Pool

If youre putting a patch on a filled Intex pool or underwater, then you must put a small amount of patching adhesive from your kit onto the backside of your patch, then fold it in half to spread the adhesive. Wait for at least 10 minutes for it to cure, then immerse it into the water while you keep the patch folded. When youre near the tear in your pool liner, open it, and place it over the hole. Make sure that you press firmly to ensure that the patch covers the hole or tear properly.

When youre patching the above the water line or a hole in your inflatable ring, you should squeeze a pea-sized adhesive to your patch and the surface you need to put it on, wait at least 10 minutes, then start placing the patch, put pressure on the center and work your way toward the edges.

Also, if youre going to patch the ring of your Intex pool, make sure its inflated so you can properly cover all its holes.

How Long Will A Swimming Pool’s Vinyl Liner Really Last

Pool Maintenance | Vinyl Liner Pool Information

By 2009, we’d installed inground and above ground vinyl liner pools for 8 years. During that time, we found that one of the biggest misconceptions that vinyl liner pool owners have is how long their liner will last before it has to be replaced.

Frankly, most pool owners are led to an unrealistic sense of their liner’s longevity because of its warranty.

So let me make one very clear statement:

Your typical pool liner warranty, be it 25 or 30 years, is a joke.

OK, so now that I’ve offended every liner manufacturer from here to China, let me explain.

Inground Pool Liner Replacement Cost

Labor costs to replace an inground pool liner range from $1,000 to $2,500 on average. Once you add the cost of the liner, the total cost to install is between $1,400 and $4,800 with most spending $3,000 to $4,000. Installing an inground pool liner is about a days worth of work depending on the condition of the walls and subfloor which also factor into the price of installation.

If you’re looking to replace an existing pool liner, then you will need to factor any necessary repairs. The subfloor may need to be patched, smoothed, and leveled. Depending on the condition, size, and shape of your pool, the replacement cost will vary.

Q: How Do I Measure For A New Pool Linera: Very Carefully

Replacement Intex 14ft x 42in Round Ultra Frame Pools ...

This could be the most important step in the process of replacing a pool liner however, since most aboveground pools have a flat bottom, measuring is much simpler than for inground pools.

Youll need a measuring tape that is longer than your pool, and a helper to hold the other end. For round pools, measure the diameter , from wall to wall. Be sure to measure from the wall, not from the edge of the horizontal top rail.

Oval pools will need wall to wall measurements for the width and the length. For the length measurement, be sure that you are measuring from the exact apex of the curve, to obtain the longest length. Likewise, when measuring the width, measure straight across the pool, be sure that your tape is at right angles to the walls, and not running askew.

Wall height , is the next measure to take. Use a hard measuring tape and measure from the flat floor , to the top of the pool wall , or to the top of the bead receiver .

Most above ground pools have a wall height of either 48, 52 or 54. Double check your wall height measurement in several spots, to be certain.

Wrinkling Slipping And Stretching

Over time, vinyl liners will lose some of their plasticity and elasticity. You might notice your liner beads in several areas or slips out of the track, symptoms that its stretching too much. You should also keep your eye out for loose fittings around your pools return jets and skimmer.

Its best not to try to squeeze more life out of your pools liner. This can damage your pool and necessitate additional, costly repairs.

Why Take Out A Loan For A Vinyl Liner Pool

Installing a vinyl lined pool in your backyard is a wonderful option for so many reasons. A vinyl liner pool is either an inground pool or an above ground pool that has a vinyl liner that is used as the base. A wall frame is made of aluminum, steel, concrete, wood, or non-corrosive polymer, and the liner that is pre-made at a factory is attached to it. A yard is excavated, making a hole that is the size of the pools dimensions. A frame is made inside the hole from one of the materials listed above, and once completed, the vinyl liner is attached to it. Pool liners come in a variety of patterns and thicknesses. They will most likely lock at their top edge, into a track located on the coping bottom. They are what protect your pool and make it last even longer.

Set The Liner With A Vacuum

This step is really helpful to remove any small wrinkles you’re having trouble removing and for preventing them in the future.

First, seal all the returns and openings with duct tape to create an airtight seal.

Then, insert the hose of a commercial duty shop vac into your skimmer until it is in between the liner and the wall a few inches down the pool wall.

Next, turn the vacuum on and wait for the liner to stick to the wall like shrink wrap.

Try to keep wrinkles smoothed out during this process. You may have to turn it off periodically while you straighten out spots that are folding.

Should You Buy The Intex 26710eh Prism Pool

Is a metal-framed pool in your summer plans?

Maybe. Do you like to swim? If so, then yes.

The pool is large enough for my whole family to enjoy and durable enough to handle it. We are having an amazing time building lasting family memories, and it keeps my kids busy for hours a day something that most parents would consider priceless.

The pool does require maintenance in the form of testing and treating the water, as well as the ongoing expense of purchasing pool chemicals and replacement filters, but its all at a fraction of the cost of a more permanent pool, while still hitting the mark in providing most of the same benefits.

But, and this is a big one, before jumping into your own Intex above-ground pool , you definitely need to consider the safety issues the pool may pose to young children, and whether your local rules and regulations allow pools of this design and size.

I also cannot stress enough that Intex metal-frame pools must be set-up on ground that is extremely level and that attaining this may require extra work and costs.

But, if these consideration boxes are easily checked off in your situation, then I wouldnt hesitate to add an Intex metal-frame pool to your summer plans.

Q: How To Install Aboveground Pool Linersa: Like This

Drain the Pool: A small submersible pump is best for draining the pool. A pool cover pump will do, or a pump can be borrowed or rented for a day. To get out the last bit of water, cut the liner with a razor knife just above the floor on one side, and lift half of the liner off the floor, to pool the water in a smaller area.

Remove the Old Liner: With a large screwdriver or cordless drill, remove the screws on the skimmer and return faceplate. For an overlap liner, you may have to remove the top rail, to be able to remove the coping strips, but if it can be avoided, they are better off left in place. For beaded or uni-bead liners, just lift and pull to remove the liner from the top of the wall. Cut up the liner into strips and roll them up. Set them out with your recycling .

Floor & Wall Prep: Walls can be wiped clean if they have any dusty, crusty deposits. If there are rusty deposits, scrape and paint and then cover with wall foam. Wall dents or crumples can usually be straightened out with a heavy hammer and two 2×4s, one on each side of the wall. Most aboveground pools have sand floors. Using flat trowels, or wood floats, smooth out the sand, shaving off high spots and filling low spots. If you have weeds, rocks or algae in the sand, its best to replace with fresh masonry sand , or install Liner Shield or Happy Bottom floor padding.

Q: How To Order An Aboveground Pool Linera: Select Your Type And Size

As mentioned above, there are a few types of above ground pool liners.

    • Overlap liners fold over the top of the wall, visible from the outside.
    • Uni-Bead liners hang on the top of the wall, with a thick vinyl hook.
    • Beaded liners lock into a track or groove, called a bead receiver.

There are other types too. Doughboy pools use an expandable pool liner, and Kayak pools have rectangular pool liners.

Unibead/J-Hook, Overlap or Beaded? The most popular liner is the overlap style liner, but perhaps the beaded liners ought to have a wider appreciation they are much easier and quicker to install, since you do not need to remove the top rails. You can use a Uni-Bead liner in place of an overlap liner, or you can convert to a beaded liner using, bead receiver, also known as conversion strips.

Upgrading to a beaded liner will mean that when you remove the old, overlap liner it will be the last time youll have to remove all those top rail pieces. And if you have done this before you can understand the time and hassle you will save. Another reason for installing a beaded liner is that they can give a classier look to your swimming pool, as there are more liner patterns. Because the overlap wont vary, they can have a waterline tile pattern, that wont be wavy.

Picking a Liner Color / Pattern: Darker colors hide the dirt a bit, and have a small solar benefit. Wavy patterns on the floor also help hide underlying floor imperfections and dirt/debris, as compared with plain blue liners.
