Major Chlorine Shortage Sends Valley Prices Soaring

Why are chlorine tablets so expensive?

Chlorine prices in the valley are surging 200 to 500 percent, according to a local pool maintenance expert, due to a major chlorine shortage nationwide.

“When you start looking for pool chlorine tablets, you’re going to start finding that prices are at least triple or quadruple what they were last year at this time,” said Stephen Little, CEO of Claropool in Palm Desert.

Some pool service people are stocking up on liquid chlorine, because the convenient and cost-effective chlorine tablets have skyrocketing prices.

Little said with the highest number of pools per capita in the United States here in the valley, the shortage could make a big splash and he anticipates prices ballooning even further.

“We’re expecting the price of tablets to double again before July 1,” he said.

Some pool service companies are trying not to pass those prices along to their customers, instead taking the hit themselves. But they’re not sure how long they can sustain that.

The surge in prices is caused in part by a fire at a major chemical plant in Louisiana last August that knocked production offline.

But the spike in demand is also caused in part by the pandemic more people staying at home, creating historic demand.

“We’ve really turned our backyards nationally into our place of vacation, our place of respite our place to get away from the office, which is now the kitchen table,” Little said.

Which Type Of Pool Is Safer

When it comes to health and safety, both saltwater and chlorine pools are safe as long as you properly maintain them, but there are a few added health benefits of a saltwater pool. Although its a misconception that saltwater pools dont use chlorine , the levels tend to be much lower. For anyone thats sensitive to chlorine, this might be reason enough to go with a saltwater pool. The chlorine level isnt usually enough to irritate your skin or eyes.

With a chlorine pool, frequent swimmers could be at a higher risk for certain eye infections, irritated skin, and even just faded and damaged swimsuits.

Not to mention, youll have to make sure the storage of your chlorine wont cause problems later on. If you dont store your chlorine in a dry, safe area, the chemicals could begin activating early on and render the entire supply useless. On top of keeping it away from your pool before youre ready to use it, you also want to make sure its far enough away that you and your family wont be breathing it in.

As a sanitizing product, chlorine isnt something you want to expose yourself to unless youre adding more to the pool water.

Immediate signs and symptoms that something might not be right with your chlorine supply include blurred vision, burning eyes, coughing, and even difficulty breathing.

Shocking Pool Chlorine Products

Super chlorinating is raising the chlorine level quickly, but not as high as when doing a pool shock. Shocking the pool is a periodic treatment to oxidize microcontaminants in the pool water. Our everyday chlorination will kill most pathogens, but chlorine molecules can be rendered inactive when they combine with nitrogen or ammonia. This creates what is called chloramines. Chloramines are no longer effective sanitizers and they are the cause of red eyes and a strong chlorine smell. Shocking removes chloramines and kills bacteria and algae.

For shocking a pool, we need a chlorine that is fact dissolving and fast acting; the opposite of our everyday chlorinating tablets. Granular chlorine is the most common method, most commonly sold in 1 pound bags. Liquid chlorine can also make a great shocking chlorine. When shocking the pool, follow label instructions, with the goal of adding enough chlorine to reach breakpoint chlorination. If this threshold is not reached , full oxidation will not occur and the full benefit of shocking the pool will be missed. You will have only super chlorinated the water.

Can you shock the pool with regular household bleach? Sure you can! Youll just need more of it, since liquid chlorine is only 5 percent available chlorine. Just wear your old clothes in case they get bleach on them.

What Can You Do About The Pool Chlorine Shortage

Experts are asking pool owners to buy only as much as they need which in most cases will be one bucket of chlorine tablets, according to Rudy Stankowitz, CEO of Aquatic Facility Training & Consultants in Florida.

I think the severity of the shortage is going;to be directly related to people buying in reasonable quantities, Stankowitz told USA TODAY. If you stock up, it will make it even harder to find.

BioLab shared ways for residential pool owners to keep their water clean and clear during this temporary situation in a press release.

It reads: BioLab’s top recommendation is to use pool chlorinating liquid as a quick and convenient option to maintain the recommended chlorine residual of 1-4 ppm in the water.

David Rouse, BioLab’s vice president of research and development, advised: “One gallon of chlorinating liquid is equivalent to dosing your pool with two of the traditional 8-ounce chlorinating tablets. Just be sure to use chlorinating liquid intended for pool care, as it contains a higher concentration of the active ingredient, sodium hypochlorite, than common household bleach.

He added, You’ll also need to be mindful that the pH will increase, requiring addition of other products to offset the pH drift from pool chlorinating liquid. You should also add a stabilizer to prevent liquid chlorine from quickly degrading in the sunlight.”

Chlorine Tablets: Limited Quantities Almost Double The Price

Customers of Leslies Pool Supplies, which has 72 locations in central Arizona and more than 900 across the U.S., are greeted with this message at the top of the companys website: We are limiting chlorine tab purchases to one bucket;per customer to manage the supply and demand in an effort to meet our customers needs throughout the season.

The number of tablets required for a pool per week can vary, according to Tracy Dick,;vice president of brand marketing at Leslies.

Most pools around 10,000 gallons in size will require one to two 3-inch tablets per week, based on variables including water temperature, air temperature, environment and usage,” Dick said in a statement to The Arizona Republic. “However, there are no standard guidelines. Every pool is different, so we cannot stress enough how important it is to test your water regularly.

Taylor Stithem, a manager at Sun Devil Pool Supply and Service in;Chandler, said customers are limited to two buckets of tablets for now. The price of chlorine tablets has gone up significantly since last year, he said.

A bucket of tablets that cost $109 a year ago is;now $199, Stithem said. He;estimates the price is increasing in $10 increments every couple of weeks. The price plateaued for a couple months this year before starting to go up again, he added.

Stithem said;he was not sure how long this would last.

Re: Skimmer Sticks Why So Expensive

Your’re not really supposed to put the trichlor pucks in the skimmer. My understanding is that triclor in the sticks are bound is such a way that they will dissolve when water is flowing around them. The pucks will dissolve withthe water flowing past them or not. Therefore, if you drop the pucks in the skimmer, the chlorine will constantly leach out without the pump running and somehow affect the pvc piping connecting your skimmer box. The sticks should only dissolve with the pump running, thereby keeping the local concentration of chlorine in the skimmer piping to a minimum. That’s the theory anyway. That bieng said, I remember my parents using pucks exclusively in our pool skimmer for years when growing up.I switched to bleach last year. I was more worried about excessive CYA levels when using pucks.Hope this helps.

    Trichlor Plant Burned Down

In August 2020, one of the largest chlorine manufacturing plants in North America was destroyed by Hurricane Laura, and it caught on fire. The implications of this disaster cannot be understated. Prior to this incident the demand on chlorine was already near an all time high, thanks to the COVID-19 lockdowns. Sources in the industry estimate the plant was responsible for at least one third of trichlor production in the country. Now, this production will be taken offline for the foreseeable future. Other manufacturers can only produce chlorine at a finite rate, and while they are ramping up production, it will not make up for the loss. Trichlor prices have nearly doubled since August, and are expected to increase even more next year. Be prepared for this, because it’s coming.

Public Pools Closing Early This Season

Why A Swimming Pool Inspection Is So Important

More and more financially strapped communities around the country have decided to close their pools early or close parts of their pools for the season. With many facilities stating they simply cant afford the chlorine.

The majority of city-run pools in Los Angeles have had to close less than a month after being allowed to reopen by the Department of Public Health, which disproportionately affects minority children who dont have other access to swimming lessons.

This chlorine issue is just exacerbating what is already an existing disparity, Jeff Wiltse, author of Contested Waters: A Social History of Swimming Pools in America, told the LA Times. Theres been a significant growth in private swimming pools , whereas public swimming pools have been generally stagnant, and in many cities theres been a significant decline.

Chemical In Short Supply After Plant Fire

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. As temperatures head into the 90s and summer approaches, more people will be wanting to use their pools.

But, according to experts, there is a shortage of chlorine because of a fire at a chemical plant in Louisiana that happened in August 2020. Charlie Hanson, who works for Ready Set Swim Pool and Spa Services, told News 6 partner News 4 Jax that because of the shortage, buying chlorine for your pool might be more expensive this year.

Theres a variety of different types of chlorine. People have been talking about the tablets being more costly, Hanson said. I havent seen a significant cost increase, but were hearing about it coming toward us.

He said installing a salt chlorinator system into your pool is an alternative for chlorine.

You still need other types of chlorine to help the pool throughout the year, but you keep it to a minimum, he said.

Hanson said working a salt chlorinator is as effective as chlorine.

If you keep the salt system on, its going to produce chlorine for you. You just need to add salt to the pool, Hanson said.

He said the last thing you want to do is stop cleaning your pool with chlorine because of this shortage.

Its not just for the algae, its to prevent getting bacterial infections, he said.

According to experts, its good to load up on chlorine before a steep price increase.

Is There A Chlorine Shortage Pool Owners See Prices Increase Here’s Why

With summer around the corner, pool owners may be spending more to enjoy a refreshing respite from the heat.

According to experts, there is a chlorine shortage due to a swimming pool boom and a fire at a chemical plant in Louisiana. This shortage will make it more expensive to keep pools clean.

After the landfall of Hurricane Laura in August 2020, the Bio-Lab pool-and-spa-treatment-products factory experienced a devastating fire that destroyed the facility’s roof and halted production, according to a report by the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board. The plant, which is one of the country’s largest suppliers of chlorine tablets, expects to resume operations by spring 2022.

The loss of production and the increase in demand “means a steep price increase is likely,” according to the website of BB Pool and Spa, a New Yorkbased retailer. They suggest stocking up on chlorine now earlier rather than later before the steep price increase.

“The extent of the chlorine shortage is still unknown, as the amount of product lost is yet to be determined,” BB Pool and Spa said on their website. “While it is still early yet for the swimming season, it is advisable to prepare now for your pool opening. That includes stocking up on chemicals needed to get you through the majority, if not the entire swimming season.”
