If you are losing water and then it seems to level off at some point, this can help you determine where the leak is originating. For example, if you close the skimmer valve and the water drops below the skimmer and keeps going, its probably not the skimmer. If your water dips below an underwater light and then stops leaking, thats a good indication of where youre losing the water.
If your water stabilizes at a certain point, try using the dye test in areas around this level. Look around for small debris or movement around a certain areathis is a good indicator where a crack or void may be sucking water.
If your water level dips to the bottom of the skimmer and stops, you most likely have a suction line leak, most likely directly under the skimmer. If the pool water level goes down to the bottom of the return jets and stops, this means you have a return line leak, most likely directly by the wall jet return fitting although it could be anywhere in the return line.

My Pool Is Losing Water
Much like a leaky hot tub, having a pool that seems to be mysteriously losing water can be a serious problem. Pool Leak Detection For Underground Plumbing
If you need to find a leak in your pipes, there are some simple methods you can use.
One way is to individually pump and plug every line to your pool. If the leak continues as nothing has happened, then you can rest easy that the leak is not located in your lines.
If the leak stops after the plugging, you need to figure out which line is to blame. Pool leak detection for individual lines can be done by unplugging each one. Do this methodically, one at a time.
Once the leak begins again, you should know which line is responsible. A pressure test on that line will then show you the correct location.
Fixing The Skimmer Leak
You can easily repair cracks in your skimmer body by using an underwater epoxy mix known as Pool Putty. You may use this on the front three sides of the skimmer, where it meets the concrete pool to fill in the gaps and cracks.
When using Pool Putty, you need to chip out all the loose or cracked material, mix equal parts of resin and hardener with pool water, then roll it into a snake. Push the putty in place and thats it. You may also pack in new plaster at the interface of your skimmer and concrete pool wall to seal up the area again. Ideally, plaster mix is very easy to work with because all you need to do is add and stir it to a spreadable consistency and apply it to the area with a putty knife.
Regardless of how big or small a leak in your pools skimmer is, remember that pool leaks are always worth your attention. They do not only waste your precious treated pool water, they can also lead to other issues such as rusted pool walls, sandy pool floor, and erosion if left untreated.

What can I do myself to determine if I have a pool leak?
First, determine if you have a water leak versus evaporation by performing a simple bucket test with the pump on, then again with the pump off. Day 1 turn ON the pump, place a bucket on the second step and fill the bucket equal to the water level in the pool, then mark the level in the bucket. If the water is less in the pool than the mark in the bucket, you may have a leak.
Day 2 , perform the same test but this time with the pump OFF. If the loss of water is greater when the pump is ON versus OFF, the leak is likely in the plumbing or equipment area. If the water loss is the same regardless of the pump being ON or OFF, the leak is likely in the pool structure.

How To Find A Leak In In
A pool has two main plumbing systems: the;suction system and the;pressurized system.
The;suction system pulls water from the pool and brings it back to the filter. The;pressurized system pumps water back to the pool after it has passed through the filter. The filtered water returns through the jet inlets, often referred to as return plumbing.
Unfortunately, it can be difficult to determine what kind of leak you are dealing with until the pipe is excavated.
Check The Ground Around The Pool
Even with an in-ground, this will sometimes help figure out the location of the leak. Walk around the perimeter of the pools edge and take note if you happen to slosh through any areas.
If you have tiling, papers, or deck, checking for any usual wet spots may give you clues as to the general area of a potential leak.

Does The Water Stabilize At Any Particular Level
You may be able to close the skimmer valve and allow the water level to drop below the skimmer, running the pump on the main drain. If the water continues to drop, we can rule out the skimmer .
When the water stabilizes at any specific level, dye test and inspect around the pool very carefully, at that level. Look for small debris which may have been sucked into the crack or void. This is a good indication of a leak. If the water stops at a wall fitting, wall step, or pool light, give it a good close look. Shutting off the pump, and plugging the drain, skimmer and return lines with expansion plugs, is another test, to rule out the plumbing.
Leaks In The Tile Line
For concrete pools with the traditional perimeter tile band at the waterline, leaking is most often found inside the skimmer. In rare cases where the pool bond beam cracks behind the tile, and also cracks the tile, pools can leak water through a crack in the top of the pool wall. Cracks in pool tile can be cleaned, dried and filled with EZ Patch 22.
