My Water Leaks To A Certain Level And Then Stops Whats Going On

How To Find a Pool Leak Like a PRO! (pt. 1)

If you are losing water and then it seems to level off at some point, this can help you determine where the leak is originating. For example, if you close the skimmer valve and the water drops below the skimmer and keeps going, its probably not the skimmer. If your water dips below an underwater light and then stops leaking, thats a good indication of where youre losing the water.

If your water stabilizes at a certain point, try using the dye test in areas around this level. Look around for small debris or movement around a certain areathis is a good indicator where a crack or void may be sucking water.

If your water level dips to the bottom of the skimmer and stops, you most likely have a suction line leak, most likely directly under the skimmer. If the pool water level goes down to the bottom of the return jets and stops, this means you have a return line leak, most likely directly by the wall jet return fitting although it could be anywhere in the return line.

Tips For Finding Skimmer Leaks

The purpose of a pool skimmer is to catch the larger debris from your pool water as it begins to circulate through your filtration system. Since a huge percentage of your pool water flows through the skimmer as it makes its way to your filter, a leak in this part of your pool poses serious problems to your property. If you have a gunite pool, you can find the skimmer encased in concrete within your pools bond beam.

If you keep on topping off your pool because its water levels are constantly dropping, then you know that the issue is not merely water evaporation due to the summer heat but a pool skimmer leak. If you suspect that your swimming pool has this problem, dont fret. These leaks are easy to fix as long as you detect them early and your pools skimmers are not yet physically damaged. Most leaks coming from the skimmer are easy to fix because they are only caused by the skimmer pulling away from the concrete.

Before we discuss the actual steps in finding leaks in your skimmer, here are a few things you need to remember:

Signs You Have A Leak In Your Plumbing System Include

  • Low Water Pressure The more air in your lines, the less room there is for water. Be sure to check your filters pressure gauge and if the PSI rating is lower than your normal reading, use the filters air relief to release air pressure.
  • Unable to Prime If your pump suddenly is unable to be primed, it could be as simple as a closed valve or a blocked impeller. Be sure to check a few other things to really single out this issue.
  • Losing Prime If the pump runs dry after manually priming the pump with a hose, it could be a sign of a more severe air leak.
  • Air Bubbles The most common sign you have air in your lines, air bubbles throughout your pool during the runtime of the pump shows an issue that needs further diving into.

My Pool Is Losing Water

Much like a leaky hot tub, having a pool that seems to be mysteriously losing water can be a serious problem. We hope we can help you troubleshoot your water loss woes and help you find the source of the issue so that it can be resolved quickly and efficiently. Pools can be a valuable resource and arent necessarily wasteful. That can all go out the window if your pool is losing water.

Note: If you do notice a leak, DO NOT immediately drain your pool. Its important to have water in it in order to locate the source of the water loss.

Pool Is Losing 1 Inch Of Water Per Day

Losing more than ½ of pool water per day indicates you likely have a leak in your pools structure or your pool pump system. You should call your pool service for a thorough leak inspection. You might not be able to keep up with refilling your pool at this point. Your pump system can be damaged if the water system begins to take in air from the skimmer. And your pool can even come out of the ground if water leaks from the pool and saturates the surrounding earth.

Pool Leak Detection For Underground Plumbing

If you need to find a leak in your pipes, there are some simple methods you can use.

One way is to individually pump and plug every line to your pool. If the leak continues as nothing has happened, then you can rest easy that the leak is not located in your lines.

If the leak stops after the plugging, you need to figure out which line is to blame. Pool leak detection for individual lines can be done by unplugging each one. Do this methodically, one at a time.

Once the leak begins again, you should know which line is responsible. A pressure test on that line will then show you the correct location.

Fixing The Skimmer Leak

How To Test My Pool for a Leak

You can easily repair cracks in your skimmer body by using an underwater epoxy mix known as Pool Putty. You may use this on the front three sides of the skimmer, where it meets the concrete pool to fill in the gaps and cracks.

When using Pool Putty, you need to chip out all the loose or cracked material, mix equal parts of resin and hardener with pool water, then roll it into a snake. Push the putty in place and thats it. You may also pack in new plaster at the interface of your skimmer and concrete pool wall to seal up the area again. Ideally, plaster mix is very easy to work with because all you need to do is add and stir it to a spreadable consistency and apply it to the area with a putty knife.

Regardless of how big or small a leak in your pools skimmer is, remember that pool leaks are always worth your attention. They do not only waste your precious treated pool water, they can also lead to other issues such as rusted pool walls, sandy pool floor, and erosion if left untreated.

The warm weather is finally back in Central Florida, which means it’s time to get the pool and spa ready!;Several things can indicate a leak, from the water level dropping by more than ¾ in one week to visual signs, including excessive amounts of dirt on the bottom of the pool, new cracks appearing in deck area, water puddles in the area around the pool, and using more chemicals than normal.

What can I do myself to determine if I have a pool leak?

First, determine if you have a water leak versus evaporation by performing a simple bucket test with the pump on, then again with the pump off. Day 1 turn ON the pump, place a bucket on the second step and fill the bucket equal to the water level in the pool, then mark the level in the bucket. If the water is less in the pool than the mark in the bucket, you may have a leak.

Day 2 , perform the same test but this time with the pump OFF. If the loss of water is greater when the pump is ON versus OFF, the leak is likely in the plumbing or equipment area. If the water loss is the same regardless of the pump being ON or OFF, the leak is likely in the pool structure.

Because pool leaks can be hard to find and difficult to assess, they may require a service person to come out more than once. I would say the average range is anywhere from $150-$250 for the standard leak repair. It can obviously be much more if you have a serious issue that requires concrete cutting. Just remember, its better to find it as soon as possible and try to fix it before it gets out of hand and costs you some serious money. Never ignore the problem! What Is The Best Way To Identify A Leak In A Pool

There are several easy ways to check for pool leaks if your swimming pools water loss seems excessive. For example, you can touch or walk on the floor of your pool to feel for squishy areas, which are indicative of leaks; spread non-toxic food coloring to reveal where eddies, ripples, or currents appear; or simply use the five-gallon bucket test, which is described step by step in the next section.;

Pool Leak or Evaporation? Identify a Leak With a 5-Gallon Bucket

Before searching your pool for a leak, you should confirm that there is a leak. Doing so only takes one day, and all youll need is a 5-gallon bucket, painters tape and water. Simply:

  • Fill a 5-gallon bucket up with water and set it next to your pool.
  • After one day, measure the difference between the water level and each piece of painters tape.
  • If the difference in the pool is greater than the difference in the bucket, then your pool has a leak; if there isnt a significant disparity, the loss of pool water is from evaporation.
  • Once you determine that there is a leak, the next step is to identify where it is.

How Much Water Loss In A Pool Is Normal

Its normal for your pool to lose a small amount of water to evaporation each day, especially if you live in a hot climate or your pool gets lots of direct sun exposure. However, if your pool is losing more than half an inch to an inch of water per day, its almost guaranteed youve got a leak on your hands. Unlike evaporation, which is a harmless natural process, a leak creates safety hazards by pumping water directly into the ground, causing weakness and instability that can ruin your pumps, damage the pool, or even lead to a collapse.

How To Find A Leak In In

A pool has two main plumbing systems: the;suction system and the;pressurized system.

The;suction system pulls water from the pool and brings it back to the filter. The;pressurized system pumps water back to the pool after it has passed through the filter. The filtered water returns through the jet inlets, often referred to as return plumbing.

Unfortunately, it can be difficult to determine what kind of leak you are dealing with until the pipe is excavated.

Check The Ground Around The Pool

Even with an in-ground, this will sometimes help figure out the location of the leak. Walk around the perimeter of the pools edge and take note if you happen to slosh through any areas.

If you have tiling, papers, or deck, checking for any usual wet spots may give you clues as to the general area of a potential leak.

Does The Water Stabilize At Any Particular Level

You may be able to close the skimmer valve and allow the water level to drop below the skimmer, running the pump on the main drain. If the water continues to drop, we can rule out the skimmer .

When the water stabilizes at any specific level, dye test and inspect around the pool very carefully, at that level. Look for small debris which may have been sucked into the crack or void. This is a good indication of a leak. If the water stops at a wall fitting, wall step, or pool light, give it a good close look. Shutting off the pump, and plugging the drain, skimmer and return lines with expansion plugs, is another test, to rule out the plumbing.

    Leaks In The Tile Line

How do I know if I have a pool leak? The DIY Bucket Test

For concrete pools with the traditional perimeter tile band at the waterline, leaking is most often found inside the skimmer. In rare cases where the pool bond beam cracks behind the tile, and also cracks the tile, pools can leak water through a crack in the top of the pool wall. Cracks in pool tile can be cleaned, dried and filled with EZ Patch 22.
