Its important to add that many people are under the impression that pool floor pads stop nutgrass from growing through your liner, this is not true. If fact non of the commonly used material like plastic sheeting, plywood, weed barrier, roofing paper, Styro-foam, Perfect Bottom or Gorilla Pad will even slow nutgrass down from doing its damage. If you have nutgrass in your yard you need to address it before installing the liner pad and pool liner. If youre unsure if you have it, buy nutgrass killer anyway, its not that expensive and if you dont use it you could end up with grass growing up through your brand new liner. Trust me, you dont want to be that guy or gal.

To effectively stop nutgrass you must use a high quality nutgrass killer. This is a cheap investment and likely the best one youll make this swim season. I must also say Ive never installed an above ground pool or pool liner in Florida without using nutgrass killer, never. Use the commercial grade stuff if you can swing it , use the garden store stuff if you cant, but always use something!

Features To Look For In The Best Above Ground Pool Pad

• Padding. Make sure the liner you buy is padded for added cushioning. Depending on what your pool is sitting on, the ground underneath can be pretty uncomfortable on your feet.

• Ease-of-installation. The pool pads of old required a lot of measuring, cutting, and taping. It was a pain! But newer pool pads are cut pretty well to spec and you can find one for almost any size pool.

• Materials. Of course, you need to know what materials the pad is made out of and how well it will hold up. For one thing, its best to look for a mold and mildew-resistant pad. If a concrete slab is not available, you can install your above ground pool on concrete. Above Ground Pool Installation: How to Install a Pool in a Concrete Slab Step 1: Determine the size of your pool.

If you are installing a pool in an existing concrete pool, then you will need to determine the width of the pool and the depth. The width is the distance from the bottom to the top. For example, if you have a 4 x 8 pool that has a depth of 4, then your width would be 4. The depth is how deep you want to go.

In this case, we are going to be installing our pool over a 1/2 thick slab of concrete, so our depth will be 1.5. So, our width and depth are 4 and 8, respectively. Cut the slab to size. You can use a utility knife to cut the slabs, but I prefer to do it with a circular saw. This will make it easier for me to keep track of where I am cutting.

I dont want to be too scientific here, but I will mention that most things are in a state of either building up or breaking down. This is the main dynamic of everything at least on earth.

When it comes to steel and aluminum the rate that they can break down can be greatly increased if there is constant moisture present.

Better quality above ground pool walls are coated to help prevent the beginning of corrosion caused by moisture. This coating can only protect for so long. If the wall is exposed to moisture long enough, then it can penetrate the coating and the metal wall will start corroding.

Its important to note here that once corrosion begins, it doesnt stop. You can slow the rate of corrosion down by keeping the metal dry, but it will still be at an elevated rate of breaking down through oxidation.

This is why its important to not allow an above ground pool to begin corroding in the first place.

Installing A Pool With A Sand Base And Sand Cove

Step 1

Using fine sand , lay a 3 thick bed of sand across the entire inside of the pool this will form your base.

Step 2

Build a sand cove against the pool wall by creating a 4 angle of sand sand base giving you a total sand cove height of 7 inches where the base meets the metal pool wall.

Step 3

This is the completed above ground pool liner installation. The vinyl pool liner should be completely supported by the pool base to avoid any stress or damage to it or the metal pool wall.

Can I Use Carpet Padding Under Pool

Traditional felt carpet padding is usually frowned upon as a pool padding material, but modern closed-cell foam carpet pads can work well. Roll Out And Install Liner

Time to unroll the liner inside the pool. The trick here is to lay it at the center of the pool and unroll from there.

Pro Tip: If it’s a sunny hot day, which is the best day to install, open the liner box and open it slightly so that your liner gets hot. This will make it stretchy and it will be easier to install.

This is best done with 2 people inside the pool. Bring it over to the walls and clip it inside the bead track. Your friends outside should help with clipping it all around.

Onces it’s clipped everywhere, using your feet, try to spread the bottom to flatten and get closer to the wall.

You should start bringing in water now. Pour in about 2 feet of water and stretch the liner to remove any creases as it is filling. If you don’t remove it now, it will stay forever.

Pro Tip: Get a water truck delivery. The Garden hose will take lots of time to get to that first 2 feet, which is essential to completing the installation.

Bring In Sand For Base

Our bases are built of sand. You will need to wheelborrow in the sand inside the pool. If you are going to a quarry, the best we have seen is screened sand, slight mix of clay. This allows the sand to compact firm. Do not use the popular mortar sand, which is often used for bricklaying.

Note: You can start bringing in the sand before the previous step. Just make sure that you lay down a piece of plywood or cardboard to protect your border. When you are done bringing in sand, make sure to re-level and inspect the area to walked over the stone dust to ensure it’s leveled.

We usually bring in 4 inches of sand inside for the base. You will find yourself roughly spreading it inside the swimming pool. But do not bring it against the stone dusk circle yet. You will need to have the wall installed before you do that. So simply add extra sand near the edges inside so that you will be able to level it later.

What Is An Above Ground Pool Pad For If You Have A Big Above Ground Pool

I honestly thought that a pool floor pad for big above ground pools was to protect the pool liner and stop it from getting rips or tears from stuff under the pool.

For little pools like mine tossed on the yard this is true, but Chad from the Above Ground Pros YouTube channel said this isnt the case for large, properly installed above ground pools.

In the video below he said in about 25 years of working on pools he has only seen about 2 tears in the pool liner caused by something coming up from underneath the pool.

Therefore, in his expert opinion, if youve got a good base layer of smooth sand laid down then your above ground pool pad is more for comfort on your feet than actually protecting the pool liner.

This is of course if you have done the work to build a flat, smooth base for your pool. A professional like Chad isnt just slapping an expensive pool down on rough ground like I do.

We have moles in the yard. It appears that they have gotten under out pool liner in one spot. What can happen to the pool, or liner, with these tunnels that have sunk in?

Is there anything we can do so this does not keep happening?

When moles get under an above ground pool and make a tunnel, the sand drops down, the liner drops down and you have an indentation in the liner with nothing under it. That means the slightest amount of pressure from a sharp object will cause the liner to burst open, usually draining the pool very quickly.

When these holes occur its best to drain the pool and put a piece of steel over the hole, redo the sand and refill the pool. Its not easy, but if you can do this while leaving a little water in the pool you are better off. A completely drained pool will cause the liner to shrink and shift.

If you just do the repair you will then want to get rid of the mole. If getting rid of moles is not going to be possible, you may want a more permanent solution, like putting the pool on a pad of concrete.

A less expensive, and less effective, solution is to use a layer of something like Gorilla Pad, carpet or Styrofoam under the liner.
