Can I Use Water Softener Salt In My Pool

A Pool Owner’s Guide to Water Hardness

Most pool owners ask the same question, can I use water softener salt in my pool? In fact, the hardness of the pool water is quite a common problem. Hard water contains minerals in high amounts. Those minerals build up inside the pipes, on the surface of the pool, and inside the pool equipment, which as a result, cause malfunction.

The impacts of hard water in pools not only create an unsightly appearance but also irritate the swimmers and may cause health issues like skin irritation. In this article, as Koyuncu Salt, a world-class salt exporter, we will answer the question, can I use water softener salt in my pool, discuss hard water, its effects, and water softener salt.

Removing Scale On Vinyl Liners:

Although the slick surface of vinyl liners can make calcium scale less likely to form, scale can deposit on vinyl liners when conditions are right.

As opposed to metal stains on liners, mineral scale can be felt with your hands and feet, rough and scaly to the touch. In extreme cases, it can be very rough and snag swimsuits and give the kids a bad case of pool toe.

To remove scale from vinyl pools, you have to be a bit more careful than other pool types, to avoid damaging the vinyl or making it look worse. The Stain Eraser for vinyl pools is tough enough for stains and scale, and works great for small scale problems.

For waterline scale on a vinyl pool: lower the water level and spray white vinegar from a spray bottle. Spray a few feet, then scrub the surface with a textured sponge or scrubber, then rinse off. Most visible scale will need an acid stronger than vinegar, however. Add 4-8 oz. of Acid Magic or Instant Liquid Acid to a cup of water in a spray bottle, and repeat the process. Tile patterns can be removed from your liner if the acid is too strong, so test in small areas and gradually work-up in strength.

For all-over scale in a vinyl pool, an accepted treatment is to:

  • Add a full dose of Stain Away or Scale Free to lock-up calcium scale.
  • Lower the pH level to 6.5 for two days*, brushing the pool 2-3x per day.
  • Return pH level to 7.4-7.6 continue with maintenance doses of Stain Away.
  • Calcium Hardness In Fibreglass Pools

Some pool shops are unaware that the calcium levels in fibreglass pools is often different to concrete pools. Consequently, some pool shops will incorrectly advise customers to significantly increase the calcium levels in their water. This mistake happens because the water testing software used at pool shops is primarily designed for concrete pools rather than fibreglass. Remember, most concrete pools have a suggested calcium range of 200-300ppm while fibreglass pools are often much lower.

So, to ensure that your water is at the right level, check the suggested calcium levels with your pool manufacturer. For example, the pool shown here is from a client who had heavy calcium build-up on their fibreglass pool from poor water balance. In addition to surface problems, excessive calcium in a fibreglass pool can clog salt cells, damage the heater, and obstruct pipework.

Balancing Calcium Hardness Isnt That Hard

It just requires some vigilance on your part. Pool maintenance just isnt an area where you can slack off and expect things to be fine when you get back into your routine. The longer you let the water chemistry languish, the more likely it is that youll have trouble with calcium hardness, and any number of other things.

Owning a pool should be fun. The better you care for your pool, the less work it will be, and the more you can enjoy it.

How to Remove Calcium From Pool Tile

Not many people realize that running hot water through the hot water heater contributes to hard water stains and mineral buildup. This is due to the mineral precipitation process that takes place in the hottest part of the plumbing system. Over time, the hot water heater will accumulate scale from hard water buildup. Reducing the temperature of the heater will help delay the accumulation.

It is also important to flush the heater every so often to keep sediment from clogging up the fixture. In areas with hard water, this is especially problematic as it contributes to the amount of time it takes for your hot water heater to accumulate unnecessary junk at the bottom of the tank.

Template Assisted Crystallization Or Nucleation Assisted Crystallization

This type of water softener can be used both softening water at home and for commercial purposes. It is done by using little ceramic polymer beads as a medium or site for collecting calcium and magnesium. These microscopic beads act as anchors that trap these hard water ions.

However, when these clusters are collected, they are stored as nano-clusters and expelled from the bead when water flows. This system saves the hard water ions as soft scales that are stable and insoluble, which makes them more expendable from the water unit. However, this method involves lower maintenance and produces better water quality.

Hard water is the problem that more of us are facing, so hard water softeners are becoming increasingly popular. Let’s see how hard water softeners work.

The minerals in hard water are higher than in soft water, making it harder to clean with soap or flush toilets. A typical home can have up to 10 times the hardness of soft water. The hardness also increases the amount of cleaning required for your home and causes plumbing problems too.

    Impact On Skin And Hair

Have you ever felt your skin is dry or itchy? Or have your lurchy and moisturized skin and hair suddenly become firm, dry, and scanty? You may think that it’s a result of the lack of hair and body moisturizer. But do you know that the water you use also contributes to a considerable extent, this could be as a result of the hard water?

Most people believe that hard water quickly removes soapy feeling from their body or hair when washing than soft water. It is untrue as hard water leaves a film on the surface of your skin because of its positively charged ion this ion reacts with the fatty acid from the soap forming insoluble substances that do not clean fast. This insoluble lime substance is what amounts to result in dry skin and itchy hair and fil surrounding hair follicles.

    What Is Hard Water

Water can be categorized as hard or soft water. Hard water is simply water with high mineral content. When rain or groundwater comes into contact with limestone, chalk, or gypsum, it picks up calcium and magnesium, giving it a higher mineral content than otherwise.

Not surprisingly, hard water is especially common in places that source their water supply from groundwater. If you get your water from a well, chances are good that you have at least slightly hard water, requiring a well water softener system.

In the U.S., hard water is particularly common across the Southwest and Midwest regions, although it is not limited to those areas.

Although in most cases hard water is perfectly healthy to drink, it can have a variety of negative effects on you, like drying out your hair and skin, and your appliances and leaving limescale buildup in your hot water tank.

In pools, hard water is sometimes referred to as calcium hardness.

    How To Remove Calcium Scale

Calcium Scale can be removed with muriatic acid, or dry acid dissolved in water. A sponge works well for small areas or a flower watering can for larger areas. Don your lab glasses and gloves for acid removal of tile scale. It will fizz and bubble and emit noxious fumes as it dissolves the scale. Acid Magic or Instant Liquid Acid or even pH Decreaser can also be used as a safer acid to remove scale. Do not use CLR or household cleaners to remove pool scale however, which add chemicals that dont belong in your pool.

How To Soften Hard Water In The Swimming Pool

Hard water can cause health problems in swimming pools. Hard water can be softened by adding limewater or pool salt. The easiest way to make your limewater is by using granulated pool salt and boiling it until the crystals dissolve.

Softening hard water in pools can be tedious, but better solutions like adding limewater or pool salt to make it soft again. Here’s an overview of the materials you’ll need for this process and how to use them properly.

Adding 25 milliliters of granulated pool salt to 1 cubic meter of already softened water would be an example. This equals 0.25 kg of regular table salt, which is pretty heavy for a small bucket. To avoid carrying such a large amount of salt to the pool, you can mix it with other ingredients. You could also buy ready-made products that are specifically designed for this purpose.

A good alternative to making your limewater is buying a product called “pool salt.” Pool salt contains sodium chloride and potassium chlorate. These two chemicals react when mixed to form chlorine gas. Chlorine gas kills bacteria and algae in the pool.

Where Should Your Hardness Levels Be

Calcium has the most influence on the total hardness context of your pool water. Other minerals such as magnesium, iron, manganese and a few others dont impact the total hardness enough for us to bother with so we stick with adjusting the calcium hardness. The recommended and best range is between 250 and 350 ppm for your calcium hardness.

All of these issues are cared for by us with your weekly pool service.

What Is The Correct Calcium Hardness Level

How to remove lime scale deposits from your swimming pool

Heres your favorite answer: It depends. But what it depends on isnt that difficult.

If your pool has a vinyl or fiberglass liner, the calcium hardness level should be between 175 parts per million and 225 ppm.

If you have a concrete or plaster pool, keep the level between 200 ppm and 275 ppm.

    See? Easy.

The key is keeping it balanced. You dont want your pool water to be too hard or too soft. Either way, youre in trouble.

In swimming pool Calcium is dissolved in the water If it is too much it will fall out of saturation and can cloud the pool and create scaling and staining in the system. If there is not enough Calcium, the water is not balanced and you will develop problems that destroy the structure of your pool.

So to keep your pool water balanced and chemically controlled. Learning how to Use The Langelier Saturation Index or LSI will give you a ballpark way of seeing this Balance that dictates what can happen in your Pool if Calcium becomes too high or too low. The LSI Index will rely on:

    • Calcium
    • Alkalinity
    • Temperature

This Ballpark measurement is meant to be a generalization of preventing low Calcium content that can cause a negative corrosive action like pitching of the walls or a high Calcium content that can cause scale and cloudiness in the pool.

Saltwater pool operators include Total Dissolved Solids which includes the salt content of the water. Others use Cyanuric Acid in the equation which can also have a minimal effect but I feel complicates it so I left them out.

Your objective is to operate your swimming Pool the very best that it can be and save money while you do it. This Index is not an exact science so it doesnt need to be further complicated. You want the Index to be close to 0. between < .03 and > .03. This is where your pool water is balanced between Hard and Soft water.
