    Are Pool Heaters Worth It

If you want to extend the pool season and have elderly folks using the pool, then theyre worth it. Personally, I think pool heaters are too expensive. I would just invest in a solar cover and enjoy swimming in cooler water.

If you want to see our favorite gas heater and heat pump brands, check our Pool Heater Comparison Guide.

And regardless of how you heat your pool, we recommend getting some type of surface protection like a solar cover so you dont lose water and heat at night.

Heating Your Pool With A Solar Water Heater

How Long Does It Take to Heat a Pool? Youâll Love This ...

Solar water heaters are mainly used for residential heating or for sanitary facilities. The exact application depends in part on the number of panels installed on the roof. You can also use a solar water heater to heat not only your home but your pool as well.

This is far more environmentally friendly than gas or fuel heating, but you do need energy to power the solar water heater.

A good-quality solar water heater will set you back around 5,000. However, solar water heaters are not our first recommendation for a pool heating system. They have the disadvantage of working at reduced efficiency on overcast days. It is precisely on days like these that the solar water heater has to work hard to heat up the pool or keep it warm. For a warm pool, you will therefore have to continue to rely on sunlight.

    Float Some Black Trash Bags

Because dark-colored objects absorb heat from the sun, placing black material with a lot of surface area on your pool will help heat the water. One way of putting this concept into practice is to float large black trash bags in your pool. The bags will absorb heat and transfer it to the pool water, warming it up, while also serving as a barrier that prevents warm water at the surface of the pool from evaporating. You can either float the bags themselves or drape them over pool noodles to add buoyancy. For best results, use thick contractor-grade bags, like these bags from Hefty .

The Horticultural Greenhouse Principle For Heating The Water

In addition to the fact that the SunnyTent ensures that the water remains clean, the SunnyTent also ensures that the water remains warm. The SunnyTent uses the greenhouse principle for this. In a greenhouse, from mid-April to mid-September it is almost always more than 25 degrees. Even when the sun is not shining.

The SunnyTent is actually an all-in-one solution for your swimming pool, the water stays clean and warm without you have to purchase all kinds of expensive solutions or equipment for this.

Do Solar Covers or Solar Blankets Actually Warm Your Pool Water???

While a dip in the pool can be a refreshing way to cool off on a hot summer day, water temperatures in the 70s can leave you shivering and searching for the warmth of a towel. Although preferences vary from person to person, pool temperatures in the 80s strike a happy medium: warm enough to be enjoyable for most children and adults, yet not quite warm enough to promote the growth of algae and bacteria.

But getting pool water to 80 degrees Fahrenheit can be a difficult task, especially for those who live in northern climates. Electric or gas pool heaters are one common way of warming up the water in a pool, but they have high price tags and are expensive to operate. If youre willing to get a little creative, there are plenty of more affordable ways to bring that icy pool water to a comfortable temp.

    Calculating Heat Run Time

Heat pumps and heaters, alike, are sized according to the British Thermal Units per hour. One BTU raises one pound of water by 1 degree F. One gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds. So, 8.34 BTUs raise one gallon of water by 1 degree F.

FORMULA: Determine the time required to increase water temperature by 1 degree F

    # of gallons in pool X 8.34 = ___________ lbs. of water

______ pounds of water / BTU Size = The hours it takes to raise the water temperature by 1 degree F

    EXAMPLE

You have a 20,000-gallon pool and use a 125,000 BTU heater. Your water is currently 70 degrees F but you would like it to be a minimum of 80 degrees F. How long will it take before the pool water reaches 80 degrees F?

    20,000 x 8.34= 166,800 lbs

    166,800/125,000= 1.33 hrs to increase 1 degree

    80-70= 10 degree difference

    10 x 1.33= 13.34 hours of heating before the pool reaches 80 degrees F.

In most cases, calculations for a heat pump and heater are optimistic. For heat pumps, the efficiency varies depending on the air temperature and therefore the calculations cannot account for cooler temperatures. The listed BTU size is when the air is quite warm.

How Is Heat Lost In A Swimming Pool

How is heat lost in a swimming pool? Pool Heat Evaporative Losses: Swimming pool water on the surface is continually transitioning to water vapor. The heat energy used during the transition to water vapor is lost from the body of water reducing the overall temperature. Evaporative losses can account for 50% of swimming pool heat loss.

Why are swimming pools cold when it’s warm out? The sun, the warmth, it all screams pool weather, but unless the pool is heated, the water will feel ice cold this time of the year. If you’re wondering why that’s the case, keep on reading! Water temperatures are slow to heat up, and just as slow to cool down. Water is very “stubborn” to change temperature.

How does the sun heat up the pool? If the pool equipment is running when the sun is heating the water then it will heat ALL the water. If the pool equipment only runs at night then it will add that cool water to the warmer pool water and the temp will be slightly reduced. Save up to 80% on your next printer ink cartridges!

Is it good to heat water in swimming pool? Warming swimming pool water is one of the best ways of enjoying the pool. The only downside to heaters is the waiting time it takes the water to get to the right temperature. Pool heaters are no longer an option for pool owners.

    Warm water pool

The period of time needed to heat up a swimming pool will vary based on size of the pool, the amount of water being heated and the equipment being used. For example, a pool is likely to heat up quicker if its smaller, the boiler being used is larger or more efficient or if a heat pump is being used. However, on average, the type of swimming pool that you would find in a leisure centre or gym being heated by a standard commercial boiler would typically take between one and two days to be completely heated up.

When Will The Swim Jitters Come To You

Before you start asking yourself how you can best warm up your pool, it is good to ask yourself how much you enjoy using the pool. When choosing the most suitable way to heat the water, there are different methods, some more expensive than others, some more efficient than others.

As mentioned, if you want warm water from mid-April to mid-September then the SunnyTent is a great solution. If you are a real water baby and want to be able to swim all year round, then it is worth considering choosing a heat pump, which heats up the pool water using electricity. With a heat pump you get a maximum swimming season, so in principle you could swim the whole year with a heat pump.

If the swimming bug only comes to you in the summer, it is not necessary to purchase a heat pump, because the sun will do most of the work in the summer. It is then only a matter of retaining the heat as well as possible.

So it is good to first ask yourself how far you will go to have a pool full of warm water and how often you actually use the pool.

How To Heat A Swimming Pool Quickly

    17 July, 2017

The ideal temperature for swimming pool water is between 78 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Young children and the elderly will prefer the pool on the warmer end of that spectrum, as will those using the pool for any type of hydrotherapy. The ideal temperature for you, however, may be on the lower end of the range. In most parts of the country, the sun alone is not enough to warm a pool to 78 degrees, so you may need to use a heater or other means to raise the pool’s temperature, especially if you want to start swimming early in the season or extend your swimming season into the fall. You don’t need to heat your pool all the time, however, if you don’t use it often. Instead, you can conserve energy by leaving the heat off and simply warm the pool quickly when you need it.

Buy An Above Ground Pool Heater

Above ground pool heaters and heat pumps are rated by BTUs, which is a simple measure of how much energy it takes the unit to heat one pound of pool water by a single degree. A heater that is for an above ground pool will have a lower BTU than in-ground pool heaters. Generally, inground pool heaters have more water to heat and need more BTUs.

Liquid heat blankets, solar rings, and solar blankets are not rated by BTUs. However, you will need to know how many gallons your pool holds or what its dimensions are so you can purchase the right heating element for your pool.

    Solar Ring Heaters For Pools

If you want to solar heat your pool but are not yet ready to buy a solar pool blanket, you could always use solar rings.

Solar rings are like a solar pool cover broken into smaller rings or circles. They make cost effective heating for pools. They are also very easy to use.

All you need to do is throw a couple of solar rings into your pool. The amount you will need will depend on the surface area of your water.

Your rings will absorb heat while they float. They will also connect to each other, locking together to heat your pool. This is because each of the solar rings have a magnet which attracts them to one another.

Solar rings create 21,000 BTUs of heat per day
