After inspecting the internal standpipe and laterals, replace the drain cap/plug that was removed earlier at the bottom of the tank. Then add water to the tank, deep enough to cover the laterals to provide a cushion when adding the new filter sand.
Caring For Your Pool Filters When Out Of Use
Another thing to consider is what happens to your filters when the pool isnt in use. If you use your small swimming pool seasonally, ensure your cartridge filters are being stored correctly when out of season. Also, check them before the next season begins, as they can sometimes lose their quality over time even when not in use.
Pump filter systems should still run during the off-season every so often to keep the chemicals in the water ticking over. Therefore, you need to monitor your filters during the off-season. As with your pool as a whole, investing in a cover and properly closing your pool will also help keep your filters working efficiently.

Withdraw The Lateral Assembly And Pipe
Slowly rotate the 10 lateral pipes upwards, then smoothly pull the lateral assembly and pipe out of the rest of the sand. Inspect the laterals for damage, replace any that look broken or worn out. Clogged laterals should be soaked in a bucket of cleaning solution for a few hours, then thoroughly rinsed and reinstalled onto the assembly.

Turn on the pump and the dirty water will flow out the waste line. Once the water runs clear in the valves sight glass, turn off the pump. Rotate the valve to rinse. Turn on the pump for 20-30 seconds. This will clean out the plumbing lines and reset the sand bed. Turn off the pump, rotate the valve to filter position and begin to filter. Take a reading of this new clean starting pressure, so you have a reference point for the next backwash cycle. Water may need to be added to the pool to replace the backwashed water.

Generally, swimming pool filters are divided into three categories:

How To Replace Sand In A Pool Filter
How To Remove Sand From A Pool
Usually when a faulty sand filter blows sand into the pool it will accumulate on the bottom under the outlet jets.
The only way to remove the sand from the bottom is to manually vacuum the pool. You will need to move the vacuum head slowly so as not to stir up the sand.
I recommend using a skimmer basket filter bag to catch the sand. Leave the multiport valve set to filter.
Otherwise manually vacuum the pool with the multiport valve set to waste. The sand will be deposited in the drain and not back in the filter.
If you are going to open the filter and fix it you dont want the sand back in the filter.
Remember this will lower the water level slightly so you will need to top up the pool with the garden hose.
Note: Automatic pool cleaners are not always useful for removing sand from the bottom of your pool.

How To Change Sand Filter Laterals
The laterals radiate out from the pipe that runs down through the middle of the filter and on first look, it seems as if they wont be able to get out through the hole at the top of the filter.
In the majority of cases, each lateral is removable and replaceable individually, although there are models where this isnt true and if one lateral is damaged the whole array must be replaced.
Once you are satisfied that all the laterals are in good shape you can begin to fill the tank with new sand.
If you have a Multiport valve that sits on top of the filter then make sure to tape over the top of the pipe the valve sits on so that sand doesnt get in and clog the laterals.
