Tending To A Leaking Pool Pump

Replacing a Pool Pump Housing Gasket

Although many pool pumps leak without incident, a leaking pump is a cause for concern. Ignoring a leaking pool pump can cause a rupture, potential draining thousands of gallons from your pool. If your pump is experiencing any leaks, here are a few of the most common reasons for leaks and how you can fix them with swimming pool maintenance help.

A leaking pump seal is when you see water dripping down the backside of the seal plate. Keep in mind that this is not actually just a loose clamp band or water dripping from the pump outlet fitting. Once youve established it is the seal thats leaking, you should obtain the correct shaft seal for your particular pump to replace.

The pump housing also called the volute is the wet end of your pump. The housing can leak where it connects to the seal plate or the dry end of your pump, if the clamp is loose, or if the seal plate o-ring is no longer making a good seal. In many cases, the pump housing will need to be replaced. Fortunately, replacement is fairly simple with just some light plumbing involved.

A leaking pump lid will leak water only when the pump is off or not running which can make a lead hard to find. In some cases, the lid has cracked which will require repair or replacement. Also, pump lids need to be on very tight, and pump lid o-rings need to be lubricated. A dry o-ring or loose pump lid will most likely drip when the pump shuts off.

The next thing you do is to replace your old shaft seal with the new one. Itâs easy, isnât it?

Loose Or Broken Fittings

While breaks, cracks, or collapses in the pipe might occur anywhere, they are most likely to occur at the points where joint connections have been established. Leak Coming From The Pump Housing

Another possible spot for a leak is in the pump housing. Leaks in the housing can develop at the wet end of your pump, which holds the strainer basket, or at the dry end. Housing leaks can occur due to loose gaskets, missing or worn-out o-rings, or faulty drain plugs. If the drain plug is the problem, it will leak only when the pump is off.

These leaks can occur due to damage to the pump that happens during a winter freeze. Freezing temperatures, and big temperature fluctuations in general, can cause plastic and rubber pump parts to shrink or crack. This is part of the reason why its important to learn how to winterize your home.

Leak Coming From The Pumps Inlet Or Outlet Fitting

Pool pump housing leak

The pumps inlet fitting is another spot that can leak when the pump is off. This is the spot where water enters the pump. The threaded fittings here are typically made of PVC. They can get loose or shrink over time, due to shifting weather patterns throughout the year. Sometimes, a silicone sealant or pool putty can seal off a minor leak. In most cases, though, the best fix to a leaking inlet fitting is simply to replace the fitting.

The pumps outlet fitting can also leak. Like the inlet fitting, this part is typically made of PVC. If it shrinks or cracks over time, it will leak water and will need replacing. A pump union with an o-ring will create the best seal here. For the best results, look for temperature-resistant parts that can withstand weather changes.

There are lots of different parts, fittings, covers, clamps and o-rings that make up a pool pump. If any one of these elements cracks, shrinks, dries out or stops working correctly in some other way, it can result in a water leak. Additionally, a leaking pool pump can result in a pool pump that wont prime, which can make it dangerous to swim in your pool.

When The Seal Breaks The Pool Pump Is Leaking

Every pool pump has a seal around the mechanical shaft that keeps water from leaking behind the impeller. If the seal gets old, then water goes down the backside of the seal plate and then through the hole where the mechanical shaft goes.

How do you know if it is the seal? You need to bend down to look at it closely and make sure it is not something else like water from the pump outlet fitting or a clamp that is loose.

How Much Water Loss In A Pool Is Normal

According to whether you are in a wet, rainy time or a drought, the amount of water lost might vary greatly. The water in your pool is most likely between 18,000 and 20,000 gallons.A drought may cause many inground pools to lose between 60 and 120 gallons of water per day just via evaporation. The loss of water might result in a high municipal water bill or the overworking of your water wells pump.As a result, its logical that you want to make certain that none of this valuable resource has escaped from your pool.

Pool Pump Leaking At Housing

Pump housing leaks come from a broken, warped, dry, or misaligned pump housing gasket.

The gasket sits between the pump and the motor and is often overlooked since it sits flush with the housing. It prevents water from getting into the motor, which keeps the bearings from getting rusted and the pump from overheating.

A faulty pump housing O-ring is one of the worst issues for pumps because of how quickly it can ruin the motor.

Another potential problem is that the pump housing gasket mightve gotten too dry. Failure to run the pump for several months or not lubricating the gasket can make it dry out.

Over time, the dry gasket cracks and warps from the sunlight and heat. The broken gasket is no match for the pumps high PSI, which increases the chances of the motor flooding.

Why Is My Pool Pump Leaking From The Top

Why is my pool pump leaking from the top? This is a question many homeowners with pools ask certified pool professionals when they find their pool pump is leaking. Discovering a leak in your pool pump can be frustrating, but these leaks are actually very common.

Pool pumps have many different components, including a motor and housing as well as various gaskets, clamps and o-rings. If any of these parts breaks or wears out, it can cause a leak. Having too little water in your pool can also lead to a leak, since it can allow air into the pump. Of course, low water levels in the pool can also be the result of a pump leak, not the cause of it. In these cases, it can be helpful to learn your pools evaporation rate.

Whatever is causing the leak needs to be fixed as soon as possible. Some pump leaks can create fire hazards. Even a slow pump leak can turn into a major problem that leads to expensive water bills. This is why its important to determine the cause of the issue so you can have it fixed.

When your pool pump is leaking from the top, it can look like a leak from the bottom. Water leaking from a spot higher up on the pump will drip or flow downward. To see exactly where the leak is coming from, you may need to bend down and use a flashlight.

After replacing all the seals and gaskets on the pump, the pool pump motor ended up also needing its bearings replaced because water had gotten past the multiple seals and into the bearing. The motor is a Century Centurion B1000. It was impossible to find out what size bearings were used. None of the pool companies knew, and I also contacted the manufacture, which led me to their local service center, who spent some time looking for documentation that had the bearing sizes, and they could not find it either. Finally, the bearings seized, the pump motor stopped, and we had to remove and take it apart to determine the bearing dimensions.

Return Line Pool Pump Leaks

Cracked Housing Hayward TriStar Pump

This leak check also begins by observing the return line connected to the pump motor assembly. Water dripping from this line is a clear indication that the connection is the problem. Water will not return to the pool if the return line comes loose. A loose return line will lower the pool’s water level.

This PVC line can have a crack that causes a small leak. This repair is also an easy one, but it is still important to replace the part before it becomes a major problem.

Pool Pump Leaking At Connection

Every pool pump has two unions. One union is considered the inlet , and the other is called the outlet .

The inlet union is on the suction side, whereas the outlet union is on the pressure side of the pump heading toward the filter and other equipment.

Both of these unions can leak from the following causes:

  • The unions are cracked, which could happen if the plumbing is installed incorrectly or the unions are bent too often.
  • If a union O-ring is missing, the union will always leak because theres nothing to seal the water flow.
  • Loose unions cant prevent water from leaking out of the pump.
  • Sunlight can warp the unions, preventing them from making secure contact with the pump.

If you have a leak spraying out of the seal between the pool pump housing and the motor assembly, you probably need to replace the housing gasket between the two units. We recommend that when you pull the pool pump motor assembly to replace this gasket, you also replace the diffuser gasket within the motor assembly.
