Ways To Reduce Heating Costs

Installing a Raypak gas heater on Intex above ground pool the easy way

You can reduce your heating cost by approximately 30-50% by using a solar blanket or solar fish. The solar fish are not as efficient but a lot more convenient than a solar blanket. If you do not use a solar blanket, all of the money spent heating the pool will just disappear overnight. A good analogy would be if you have a cup of coffee you keep the lid on and it will stay warm and take the lid off it cools off very quickly the pool is the same way.

Do I Need A Pool Heater In Florida

It may feel like a strange question to ask, especially when its the middle of July, and youre sitting in the backyard staring into depths of your pool. Because lets face it, Florida gets pretty hot, especially during the summer months.

Yet, even so, we still experience our own version of the four seasons. We dont always have swim weather year round (especially if you live in north or central Florida.

Because when September rolls around, the temperatures start dropping.

During that time, it rarely stays hot enough to keep a pool comfortable, let alone warm. And it only gets colder for the months to come.

This is why most people living in Florida without heaters end up closing their pools around this time. And they usually stay closed until around April-May.

Imagine, thats almost 6 months that your pool goes unused.

But heres a little secret

You can easily claim those extra six months and extend your swim season by doing just one thing:

Using a pool heater.

If youre a pool owner who loves swimming, and doesnt want to miss out because of the weather or time of year, then the answer is clear. Having a pool heater in Florida is essential to getting the most out of your pool

And it may surprise you to know that certain kinds of pool heaters, like pool heat pumps, can both heat and cool your water. A feature that easily doubles their usefulness, but well get into this more in the next section.

Pool Heater Cost Factors

In addition to the type of pool heater you choose, several other factors will impact how much you pay to install a pool heater and run it during the pool season. These factors include:

  • The size of the unit you need
  • The BTU output
  • Labor costs in your area
  • The climate in your region
  • Extra parts and labor, like running new gas lines or electricity to the unit

For example, a large pool likely needs a heater with a high BTU output and more horsepower. These larger units are more costly to purchase and install. Or, if the installation requires extra parts or work, like running new gas lines or electrical wiring, there will be additional costs added onto the bill for both parts and labor.

Another factor that affects the price of installation is the cost of the billable hours and extra parts or materials. Depending on the type of pool heater you purchase, a pool heater installation will require PVC plumbing, gas plumbing, electrical wiring and proper venting. These costs add up, as do the hours spent on the job by the professionals.

The area you live in can also impact the price of installation. Labor costs vary greatly from one place to place, and contractors in areas with high demand may charge more to install your pool heater.

You may also have to pay to have the old heater removed and discarded. These fees, while typically nominal, may also need to be factored into the equation.

Fireplace Gas Line Installation Cost

You can expect to pay at least $700 to install a fireplace or furnace gas line. Cost factors for this project include the type of gas fireplace you have, the technology used and the size of the fireplace.

Another factor is whether its an existing wood-burning fireplace that needs to be converted via a gas fireplace insert. Installing the insert would cost you more.

Glazed Solar Pool Heater

Above Ground Pool Heater Installation

Glazed solar panels run from $3,000 for a small system to $8,500 for a large system. When you think of solar panels, you usually visualize a glazed system made with glass. This system is better suited for areas that need more heat or lack enough long, sunny days to generate an ample amount of solar heat. Glazed solar pool heaters consist of copper tubing outfitted on an aluminum plate and covered with iron-tempered glass. The design is more efficient at capturing solar heat in areas with cold weather than unglazed systems. A glazed solar pool heater is made to be used year-round.

Maintaining Your Pool Heater

Its important that you maintain your pool heater to extend how long it lasts. Make a point to keep the area around the pool heater free of twigs and leaves, and clean around keep the grass neatly cleared or trimmed. You should also keep an eye out for rodents and check your manual for any other tips. You want to keep your pool chemistry balanced and maintained so that the heater performs at top levels. Winterize it properly when you switch it off for the season.

Each spring, have a professional come out and inspect the heater to ensure its in good shape. This can help make your heater last longer, and this makes it easier to justify your pool heater cost. During the inspection, theyll tell you about any repairs you need to have done or when its time to replace it. An inspection will add around $150 to your pool heater cost.

Cost To Diy Install A Pool Heater Vs Hiring A Pro

Installing a pool heater yourself saves you anywhere from $300 to $1,000. If you already have the correct hookups, its a simple process.

However, installing new gas, water or electrical services to your patio or outdoor living area should be left to the pros. Incorrectly hooking up the services or the heater can lead to a broken heater and possible water damage.

What Is A Solar Pool Heater

A Solar Pool Heating system involves pumping pool water through a series of tubes, known as a Solar Collector or Solar Absorber mounted on the ground or roof of a building. The suns free energy heats the circulating water, returning it back to the pool at an elevated temperature.

Solar pool heating systems work seamlessly with your pool equipment and are fully automatic. You set the desired water temperature on the solar control. And when solar energy is available on the solar collectors.

An automatic motorized valve directs the water through the solar panels and directs the solar heat back to the pool. This process continues until either the pools filter pump is switched off for the day or the desired pool temperature has been reached. For more detail read How solar energy work?

In most cases, the existing filter pump can easily deliver sufficient flow to the solar panels. The only requirement is that the filter pump must be operated during the day .

This is the time most pool professionals would recommend running your filter, whether you have solar or not. It is also the time when the pool is most likely to be used and the time when good circulation is required for sanitizing chemical distribution.

Welcome to Mr Pool Mans DIY guide series! Today were going to look at how to correctly install a pool heater. We wont be touching on how to DIY install a gas pool heater because that involves tapping into your gas lines and we cannot in good conscience recommend installing a gas pool heater on your own. Why? Well, the worst thing that can happen with a botched pool heat pump or electric pool heater installation is that it wont turn on properly . On the other hand, a gas line leak well, well just leave that to your imagination.

Plus, if youre confident enough to work with gas lines, then you probably wont need a DIY guide!

How To Keep Pool Warmer To Minimize Heating

The consumption of energy on your pool will rise at every degree the temperature increases. It will cost you 10% to 30% more if you bring the temperature up from a very cold pool. If you live in warmer places then you can save a lot from heating.

There is also a way to improve the cost of usage of your pool heater and that is by using a pool cover. Pool covers can reduce the evaporation of water thus making you save on water make-up and it also reduces the chemical consumption of the pool. You can buy a solar blanket which cost around $150 to $225 and can absorb up to 85% of solar energy and can even increase the temperature of your pool to 20 degrees.

Other pool covers are made up of UV-stabilized polyethylene, polypropylene, or vinyl. The vinyl covers are made of heavier material and can last for a long time. It will cost you just around $15 to $150 depending on the size of your pool.

Installing this type of heating system usually runs between $450 and $1,000 for labor, which means youll spend a total of $1,350 to $5,500 depending on the size and style of system you choose. Gas systems have been the most popular type of heater and run on either natural gas or propane. Either use a propane tank or your natural gas line to operate the system. The price to run a natural gas option will be about half as much as propane. Although running a propane option per month is expensive, it is a good option for properties without a natural gas line. These units are fairly inexpensive, heat water faster than any other option, and use a thermostat. The downside to these options is the expensive price of operation. Gas heating systems should last at least five years.

Unit Size
$4,250 – $7,000
