What Is Liquid Chlorine For Pools

Sodium Hypochlorite is commonly called liquid chlorine or bleach. Most household bleach that you will find in stores is 6% chlorine. Pool chlorinating liquids may be 10% or 12.5% chlorine.

If you buy household bleach, you want pure liquid chlorine with no additives. Additives such as fragrances, thickeners , or surfactants may cause foaming. Bleach with fabric protectors may also cause foaming.

Most Clorox bleach today says it has Cloromax Technology. They are polymers that create foaming and are not suitable for pools. Clorox Germicidal Bleach did not have additives but the December 2019 label on their website now shows Cloromax Technology. So look carefully at the label and ingredients on any Clorox bleach products you intend to use in your pool.

Most retail bleach is manufactured by a few chemical suppliers. KIK corp is probably the biggest. They all use the “ChloroMax” technology that Clorox patented and then licensed out. So even the store brands like Target or Walmart will say their bleach is regular unscented, etc and somewhere on the bottle will be the phrase “Fabric Protection Technology” . Read bleach labels carefully and look for code words that may imply it has additives other then chlorine.

Check the date code on any liquid chlorine. You want fresh chlorine preferably bottled within the last 3 months. Liquid chlorine strength breaks down with time and temperature.

Hello everyone!

I am a new homeowner with a pool and am struggling a bit with keeping my pool clear. I tested my water at my local leslie’s pool store and they told me I have too much phosphates and my alkalinity was low so I added alkalinity up and leslie’s no phos. Added the alkalinity up to the pool first and then added half of the no phos few hours after. My pool pump has been running for 24 hours and this morning I added the other half of the no phos. I decided to brush my walls because I could see some yellowing/greening of my walls, floor and steps. That made my pool water even more cloudy and green. What should I do next? I was planning on vaccuuming my floor manually on the waste setting and then shocking my pool tonight. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

A fire at a chemical plant and a pandemic-driven boom in the construction of backyard pools are the causes of a nationwide shortage of chlorine tablets, experts say. Panic buying could make it worse.

Stuck at home because of the coronavirus pandemic, people who found themselves sitting on savings from canceled vacations and other cutbacks built pools in record numbers last year to make quarantine more enjoyable.

Then a fire at the end of last summer caused a shutdown at the plant that produces most of the countrys supply of chlorine tablets. This year, the arrival of Memorial Day and pool season has industry experts warning of a shortage that threatens to disrupt backyard plans from coast to coast.

There is a very, very good possibility that were going to run out of chlorine tablets, said Rudy Stankowitz, a swimming pool consultant and educator with more than 30 years of experience in the industry. People should start looking into alternative methods of sanitizing swimming pools.

The shortage, which Mr. Stankowitz described somewhat hyperbolically as a poolocalypse, will affect residential pools more than public ones, which typically use different forms of chlorine.

There are significant public health implications. Chlorine tablets are used to sanitize pools and to keep them free of algae and bacteria. Inadequately sanitized water can become turbid, making it a safety risk and a leading cause of drownings, Mr. Stankowitz said.

Liquid Chlorine Vs Tablets

Liquid chlorine is the purest form of chlorine you can add to your pool. Residential pools cannot add pure chlorine since chlorine is a gas. To transport the chlorine it needs to be bound to other stuff. The chlorine gas in liquid chlorine is bound to water with some salt and lye added for the manufacturing process. The salt will accumulate in your pool water and is harmless in small quantities.

To manufacture solid tablets chlorine gas is bound to other solid chemicals whose accumulation in pool water may not be desirable. TriChlor tablets have chlorine bound to CYA and dry acid. Calcium Hypochlorite, also called Cal-hypo, tablets have chlorine bound to calcium. Both CYA and calcium accumulate in the water and can only be eliminated by draining.

CYA levels over 80 can reduce the effectiveness of chlorine and require higher free chlorine levels to be maintained for adequate sanitation.

High calcium levels can cause scale on pool surfaces and in a Salt Water Chlorine Generator.

Ace Hardware Named Nation’s Most Favorite Home Improvement Chain

OAK BROOK, IL– – A new study conducted by Market Force, a leading global customer intelligence research firm, recently named Ace Hardware “America’s favorite home improvement chain.” According to the study, the findings are based on consumers’ satisfaction levels and likelihood to recommend Ace Hardware to others.

For the rankings, Market Force polled nearly 2,000 consumers who were asked to rate their satisfaction with their last experience at a given home improvement store and their likelihood to recommend it to others. That data was averaged to rate each brand on a Composite Loyalty Index. The Market Force study also looked at the attributes that drive these preferences, analyzing factors such as merchandise and brand selection, cleanliness and value.

From the study, Ace Hardware received the top composite loyalty score of 61 percent, followed by competitors Menards, Lowe’s, Home Depot and Walmart. According to the study issued by Market Force, “Ace Hardware ranked first in nearly every category, with particularly strong marks for organized merchandise and speedy checkouts.”

This summer, we are all about chilling in the pool and enjoying the hot weather.

Problem is, in Texas it keeps raining, and thats making it hard to keep our pool in tip-top shape.

We had a BBQ coming up, and our pool had started to grow some black algae.
