This is one of the oldest debates among swimming pool professionals such as myself. I am a big fan of running a swimming pool pump 24-hours a day during the swim season.
You then get continuous filtering and chemical distribution of the pool water. It also does not hurt a pool pump because they are designed to be run for long periods and they are very energy efficient when operating.
Detractors always point out that pool pumps dont need to be run 24-hours a day to keep pool water clear, the heat buildup in the motor takes away from a pool pumps useful life, and a pool owner will waste electricity and pay more for their energy bill.
Perhaps a better question is if its necessary to run your pump continuously? The answer to this is no. You just have to run your pump long enough to circulate all of the water in your swimming pool 2X a day.
For example if your pump is rated at 30 gallons per minute and you have a 10,000-gallon swimming pool, it takes 5 ½ hours to circulate all of the water in your pool once. So, you will need to run your pump for at least 11 hours a day.
Look At The Pool Pump Ratings To Find The Right Pump

Don’t just assume that you need the same horsepower pump as you now have.

Suppose your system has 60 feet of head and you want a pump that will deliver 50 gallons per minute.

From this chart, you can see that a 1 horsepower pump will give you 52 GPM flow on a system with 64 feet of head.
We have tried to give you the flow information on each pump so that once you come up with a rate of flow, you can come up with the proper pump, the first time.
Note: Figuring out feet of head is difficult. Typically a in-ground pool will have 50-60 feet of head pressure and an above ground pool will be somewhere around 30 feet of head. These are only approximations.
What about ‘FEET OF HEAD’ ? What does that mean?
The total resistance to flow is measured in “feet of head”. As you can tell from looking at the pump charts, the greater the resistance to flow , the lower the flow rate. The greater the resistance to flow, the more powerful the pump needs to be to overcome it.

The Pump Fails To Pull Water
When water isnt being pulled in to the pump, it cant reach the filter and pass through the system properly. The first thing to look for is a clog in the system.
First, check the skimmer and the pump baskets to make sure theyre not clogged. Next, check the impeller for debris impeding its movement. Open up the pump and clear away any debris.
Another potential cause can be an air leak in the suction line. Since air has less mass than water, the pump will suck in air instead of water. Check the lines for leaks and patch up any you find.
How Much Water Does Your Pool Hold
The first step in determining the proper size pump for your pool is to calculate how much water it holds. The reason for this is that your pool pump should be able to turn over the water in about 8 hours. In other words, all the water in your pool should run through your pump in that time span. And that should happen once a day.
To determine how much water your pool holds, start by looking at the paperwork that came with your pool. If you cant find the number of gallons it holds, dont worry. With a little simple math, you can figure it out on your own.

For a rectangular pool: Length X Width X Average Depth X 7.48 = Total Pool Gallons
For a round pool: 3.14 x radius squared x average depth x 7.48
For an oval pool: 3.14 x ½ Length X ½ Width X Average Depth X 7.48 = Total Pool Gallons
To determine the average depth in your pool, which you will need for the above formulas, add the shallowest part of your pool and the deepest part of your pool and then divide the number by two.

Add In Total Dynamic Head
So far weve covered the ideal flow rate your pool needs and the limits of the pipes and filter. There are several other factors we need to take into account that can impede the flow of water.
Factors such as:
- distance of the pump from the pool
- the number of corners or bends in the pipes
- height difference i.e. a pump may be installed higher or lower than the level of the pool
- the size of pipes
- other equipment installed such as heaters and water features
All of these factors create friction losses, which means the pump will use more energy to make the water flow. In fluid dynamics, this is whats known as Total Dynamic Head.
Its not easy for the DIYer to calculate the impact of these things without a working knowledge of fluid engineering.
What should you do then?
Heres a table showing an average of the total dynamic head for residential pools.
If your pool is a fairly standard pool and your pump is not 50 feet away or located well below or above the water level of your pool, use these measurements. Otherwise, you may need a larger pump and a professional to help you choose the right size pump.

High head pumps are used when resistance in the system is high. An example of this would be a pool with a water feature, connected hot tub, solar heating, in-floor cleaning system, deck jets, therapy jets, a series of valves or turns in the plumbing, lots of in-line equipment, or an equipment pad thats quite a distance away from the pool.

Is It Okay To Run A Pool Pump 24 Hours A Day
Definitely! A pool pump running 24/7 will use up a lot more electricity, so your utility costs will bump up each month. However, from a filtration perspective, an endlessly running pool pump will keep your pool crystal clear.
