Will Area Swimming Pools Open For The Summer

As Heat Moves In, Several Twin Cities Pools Open For Season

June 8, 2020 by Jason Sethre

With the temperatures already hovering above 90 degrees, a dip in a swimming pool would be refreshing.

The rural communities in Fillmore and Houston Counties are fortunate to have city-run swimming pools in communities like Chatfield, Preston, Rushford, Spring Grove, and Spring Valley.

But, due to concerns relating to the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing, as of the first week of June, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz still has not allowed for community swimming pools to be open to the public.

Chatfield

In Chatfield, home to the newest community swimming pool in Southeast Minnesota that opened last summer, City Clerk Joel Young said, The City of Chatfield has every intention of opening the pool, if county, state and federal guidelines allow.

According to Young, the City Council has not set a drop-dead date for when it would not be economically feasible to open the pool. With the cost of labor , chemicals and operating supplies, utilities, and insurance, the pool staff accounts for about half of the annual expenditures. Another consideration is that the Chatfield pool requires 214,000 gallons of water. The estimated cost of getting the pool ready for the public is around $6,000, and costs another $150 per day for the power and chemicals needed to the maintain the pool.

Preston

At this time, Preston is currently not offering swimming lessons.

Public Pools In Minnesota Approved To Reopen Jan 4

Opening day at Minneapolis Parks wading pools

By Paul Klauda Order Reprint

Starting Jan. 4 lap swimmers can get back in Minnesota pools and high school swimming teams can begin practice in the water after action taken Wednesday by Gov. Tim Walz.

A five-member Minnesota Executive Council approved a new executive order signed by Walz earlier that reopens public pools that had been closed by executive order since Nov. 21. The governor had eased some restrictions last week to allow fitness centers to reopen with modifications but pools were not addressed at that time.

The order signed Wednesday allows “lap swim, lessons and organized sports” in pools provided they follow COVID-19 protocols. While masks are required in fitness centers, the new order exempts mask use while in the water.

“We’re pleased that our swimmers will be able to begin training on Jan. 4 in the pool,” said Bob Madison, Minnesota State High School League associate director.

Walz put a four-week pause on youth sports and indoor fitness centers to help address community spread of the virus that was behind a sharp rise in COVID cases causing strain on hospital ICU bed capacity.

The pause was set to expire last Saturday until the governor extended it for two more weeks while allowing fitness centers to reopen with restrictions.

While high school teams and other youth sports have been cleared to start practice on Jan. 4, officials are waiting for further guidance from the Minnesota Department of Health before determining when games will resume.

Mn Pool Builder > > How Long Is The Swimming Season

In Minnesota, many people thinking about adding a swimming pool to their homes for the recreational, social, and health benefits often ask about how much of the year theyll be able to use their pool. At the most trusted pool builder in Minneapolis and St. Paul, weve found that our customers actively use their pools for about seven months of the year. Starting in April, when they open their pools for the season, they continue to swim until sometime in October, when most pools are closed in preparation for the winter.

Beyond the actual time you swim outdoors, consider the value of the swimming season for your life and your familys life. The exercise alone for all members of the family helps assure them of good health and plenty of energy throughout the year. The social connections built around your swimming pool, too, last far beyond the actual swimming season. Thats especially important for growing children, whose developing friendships affect their entire lives. While the swimming season doesnt last the entire year, the advantages of owning a backyard pool extend far beyond just swimming.

Every year is different, of course, but that seven-month pool season is typical for most owners in the Minneapolis St. Paul area. Some owners even open their pools in March and close them around Halloween. A lot depends on how they use their pools and the options theyve selected for their installation. Some of the options that can extend the pool season include:

When Do Sioux Falls Swimming Pools Open?

Imagine being able to walk out into your backyard on a hot August day and jump right into a swimming pool to cool off. You wouldnt have to worry about E. coli outbreaks or algae blooms that can spoil the joy of city lakes. You wouldnt even have to leave your backyard to float on your back and look at the clouds.

The chance for a daily swim was part of the allure that persuaded writer Annette Schiebout to purchase a house with a pool two years ago. Im a mermaid myself, she said. Id like to swim every day.

In the past, Schiebout had enjoyed living in a condo that had a pool as one of its amenities and going for a swim became part of her regular routine. So, when she came across a gorgeous Colonial Revival home designed by Harry Wild Jones in the Whittier neighborhood, the pool stood out as an attractive amenity.

Little did she know what she was signing up for. I didnt actually know how expensive it would be to maintain, Schiebout said. I figured I would figure it out.

The house had sat on the market for two years without being winterized when Schiebout moved into it in September 2017. When she got a pool inspection before she closed on the house, the pool inspector initially thought the pump wasnt working and would cost $10,000 to fix. Turns out the pump was fine it was just so stuffed with debris that it wasnt working, Schiebout said.

Minnesota To Allow All Pools To Reopen June 10 At 50% Capacity

    Pools are open

Though some clubs had already gotten permission to resume training, all pools in the state of Minnesota will be allowed to open at 50% capacity as of tomorrow, June 10.

Thats according to the latest update of Governor Tim Walzs Stay Safe MN plan. The state says beginning June 10, all public swimming pools will be allowed to reopen at 50% of the facilitys total capacity. However, each facility will have to have a COVID-19 Preparedness Plan in place before reopening.

The state has included some other guidelines for reopening. Facilities will have to make sure people can social distance on pool decks and in pools. The guidelines encourage scheduling time slots to limit the number of people in a facility at a time, as well as assigning separate entrance and exit doors.

Three of the states larger clubs Riptide, Edina Swim Club, and Aquajets Swim Club petitioned the governor to allow competitive swim teams to return to pool facilities. The June 5 update of the Stay Safe MN plan notes that public swimming pools were open from June 1-9, but only for youth sports and recreational activities.

Pools across the country have been shut down this spring amid the worldwide coronavirus pandemic.
