Cedar Rapids City Pools Will Open This Summer

Cedar Rapids municipal pools will open this summer with a phased approach, the city announced on Tuesday. Modifications will be made to follow health guidelines and the citys plans are flexible if changes need to be made due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Noelridge Aquatic Center will open on Saturday, May 29, which is Memorial Day weekend. Cherry Hill Aquatic Center will have a special evening swim kick-off on Tuesday, June 1, with daily operations beginning the next day on Wednesday, June 2.

Bever, Jones and Ellis pools will open the last week of June during afternoons only.

City pools were closed last summer due to the pandemic. In an announcement last May, the city said closing the pools was the safest option due to the number of surfaces that are touched at the pool and the difficulty of social distancing in the water.

According to the Parks and Recreation Department news release on Tuesday, the pools will be able to effectively meet public needs, even with health guidelines in place.

In previous years our attendance in June was lower due to cooler temperatures and kids getting out of school, Parks and Recreation Director Scott Hock said in the release. We anticipate this will occur again and the aquatic centers will be able to safely handle the demand.

People will be allowed to bring their own deck furniture until pool furniture is available.

Beach Season Is June To September

Beaches are open year-round for public use, but lifeguard supervision does not begin until June. Swimming at beaches should only occur when a lifeguard is on duty and is only permitted in the designated swimming areas.

When a beach is open:

  • the beach is supervised and maintained
  • washrooms and other facilities are open

When a beach is closed:

  • the beach is not supervised or maintained
  • washrooms and other facilities may be closed

Swimming without the supervision of a lifeguard or outside designated swim areas is not recommended.

City Of Cedar Rapids Reveals Plans To Open Pools This Summer

YES! That was the first thought that came to my mind when I learned the City of Cedar Rapids is planning to open pools this year. And I don’t even swim. I just know what a huge, social activity it is for kids. An activity they had to do without last year. It’s safe to say this year’s openings are great news for parents, too.

The city announced this morning that they will be using a phased approach to reopening and that adjustments will be made, as warranted by the ongoing pandemic.

The first pool to open will be the Noelridge Aquatic Center, which is in the photo above. It will open for the Memorial Day weekend on Saturday, May 29, through Monday, May 31.

The Cherry Hill Aquatic Center will have an evening swim to kick-off the season on Tuesday, June 1. Cherry Hill will start daily operations the following day.

The city’s other three public pools at Bever Park, Jones Park, and Ellis Park won’t open ’til the final week of June, and only during the afternoon.

A media release from the City of Cedar Rapids states that the plans above keep with the normal phasing in of pool openings. That allows the city to make any necessary changes before all of the pools are open on a daily basis.

Lifeguard and swim instructor certification classes have already begun, but training will be slower this year, due to the limits on class sizes. The phased openings of city pools will also assure that everyone is hired and trained.

You can find more details on the city’s plans HERE.

Cherry Hill Water Park

Cherry Hill Park Campground College Park Maryland (Off Kilter RV 4/21/19)

Originally a working fruit farm, Cherry Hill has since evolved into a waterpark, campground, and family entertainment center. This 20-acre attraction in Kaysville, Utah still has over 700 trees, many of which are the cherry trees that the park obtained its name from.

The waterpark has a collection of waterslides, the Cardiac Canyon river tubing run, Grant’s Gulch lazy river, two swimming pools and a children’s water play area called Pirates Cove. Other attractions found at the park are a miniature golf course, batting cages, video arcade and the Pie Pantry Restaurant, which as expected, specializes in Cherry, Apple and Razzleberry pies.

Cherry Hill’s adjacent campground has over 180 campsites accommodating tents and RVs up to 40 feet.

Important Indoor Pool Policies

There are many guidelines for us all to follow while using the JCC indoor pool:

Masks must always be worn except while entering and exiting the water and while in the water. Masks are required for observation/supervision roles.

You will be required to fill out a waiver, code of conduct and health check form before entering the pool area for the first time.

Members may use the tall lockers and showers will be available for use in a limited capacity. Masks will be required unless showering and please practice social distancing around other members.

No food items are permitted on the indoor pool deck at any time.

Cedar Rapids Shares Plans For Reopening Pools This Summer

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Department is moving forward with plans to reopen pools this summer, but with health and safety modifications in place.

The city said it is making its plans flexible, so adjustments can be made in case pandemic conditions change.

  • Noelridge Aquatic Center is set to open Memorial Day weekend, May 29 – May 31.
  • Cherry Hill Aquatic Center will host a special kick-off evening swim on June 1, with daily operations beginning on June 2.
  • Bever, Jones and Ellis pools will open during afternoons only beginning the last week of June. These pools traditionally follow a phased opening plan to assess operations before opening for daily use.

In previous years our attendance in June was lower due to cooler temperatures and kids getting out of school. We anticipate this will occur again and the aquatic centers will be able to safely handle the demand, Scott Hock, Parks and Recreation Director, said in a press release. We also expect that pool use will grow as the public is vaccinated throughout the early summer months.

Health and safety measures include requiring masks to be worn except when in the water or eating and drinking. Deck furniture will not be used, but patrons will be allowed to bring their own.

Additionally, pools wont be selling season passes, but the city said adjustments are being made to the punch card system to make it more affordable for those who swim on a regular basis.

Those seeking a little more downtime can sidle off to the fishing lake , take a quiet stroll on the walking trail or relax in the hot tub or sauna.
