Pool Screen Enclosure Repair Costs

DIY How to install top panels on your pool enclosure

For minor damage in one panel or section, individual screen repair is economical. However, when replacing the fasteners or when the screening has reached its life expectancy , a full rescreening is often cheaper.

  • When replacing fasteners or repairing structural damage, the old screens have to be taken down, and it’s the same amount of labor to rescreen, just without the extra material costs.
  • If the mesh is 10+ years old, starts tearing, the color changes, and the coating wears away, these are common signs the screens are nearing its life expectancy and needs rescreening.

Average Pool Screen Enclosure Repair Cost

National Average Cost
Roof $50 $65

Contractors charge $30 to $60 per hour with minimum call-out fees of $100 to $200 for other minor repairs, such as replacing the spline, screws, anchors, fasteners, or cables, caulking and sealing the beams, or replacing any hardware.

How Long Does Pool Screening Last

This is largely dependent on the materials used both the quality of the screen and the type of screening. Phifer screening can have double the life span of the average screening, lasting up to 8 years. Phifer Glas-Shield can last up to 10-12 years. Beware of cheaply produced screens manufactured in China also referred to as Artisan Wire. They might seem like a deal, but their average lifespan is only 3-4 years.

Size & Height Of Pool Cage

The larger the enclosure, the lower the cost per square foot, but the higher the overall cost. The size of the enclosure depends on the size of your pool, deck, and seating area. A 12 x 24 pool with 3 sidewalk needs an 18 x 30 enclosure. A 6 deck area requires a 24 x 36 enclosure.

Enclosures need a height of at least 7 to 8 to walk or stand, which costs twice as much as a low enclosure that only covers the pool. Heights vary from one foot above the surface of the pool, up to two-stories tall.

Pool Enclosure Height Comparison

Low Base cost Seals and covers the pool from snow, rainfall, and debris. Allows enough room to swim and ranges from 1 to 2 feet above the surface of the pool.
Medium 1.5X base Reaches several feet above the ground with plenty of space to move around in and above the water level. Designed without obstructing views of the surrounding landscape.
High 2.0X base One to two-stories high to match or extend higher than the home’s roof. Turns the pool area into an outdoor room for people to walk, sit, swim, and play.

DIY SCREEN REPAIR – REPLACING A RIPPED SCREEN on a Pool Enclosure Patio or Window

Get out your big wheeler its time to roll some spline and screen. I always make the guys cut the screen out on a nice smooth driveway. After they sweep it off, they have a big open space to cut screen without it having a chance to get all wrinkled up. They dont like it because they have to get out from under the shade of my ass and actually do some work in the sun, but I like it just because I think some of my helpers need a good tan and it helps keep the screen cuts nice and pretty.

Rolling a roof panel in is a lot different than rolling in a wall panel. With a wall panel, you roll in the top first, the sides next and then the bottom last so you can get the proper tension on the screen. Then you go back one last time and cut the excess screen away. But when youre on the roof, you dont have the luxury of going back over the same panel more than once. Youve got to work three sides at once and trim the materials as you go along.

The best way to keep a roof panel tight and right is to stretch the screen at a diagonal angle rather than horizontally or vertically. Where the two screen edges run parallel, keep the red-lined side of the screens factory edge directly in the center of the aluminum struts for reference. Pull the other side tight as you work your way along.

Pool Rescreening Cost Factors

Other factors that influence the overall cost to rescreen a pool or porch enclosure are:

  • Location Cities with a higher cost of living have local labor rates up to 50% higher.
  • Free-standing or attached lanai An attached lanai enclosure has one less wall to rescreen.
  • Size Larger and taller enclosures are more expensive to rescreen. A two-story enclosure requires scaffolding and costs 30% more.
  • Split Purlins A purlin is a roof-framing batten that makes rescreening more labor-intensive, as installers cannot put one sheet across the roof. They have to spline the tracks in each purlin instead. Charges are per section.
  • Beam Width The wider the width of the beams, the more dangerous the installation or repair job, especially on the roof.
  • Spline Spline holds the screens securely in place and costs $50 to $150 for the materials on an average pool cage. If the old spline is difficult to remove or is not easily accessible, and scaffolding is required, labor costs increase.
  • Roof Type Roof types such as gable, mansard, hipped, segmented, or lean-to take longer to rescreen and cost 10% to 20% more overall.
  • Fasteners The best time to replace the fasteners is during a rescreen, which saves $1,000. Replacing the rusty, corroded fasteners cost $2,400 on its own, or $1,400 when replaced during a rescreen. Rusty screws can weaken an enclosures structural integrity by up to 75%. Use ceramic- or nylon-headed fasteners that wont rust or fade.

Cost To Remove A Pool Enclosure

The average cost to remove a pool enclosure is $1.00 to $2.50 per square foot, or between $800 and $2,000, which includes cleanup and dump fees. Prices increase if the aluminum or steel is hurricane-rated, and if the support column fasteners need to be drilled out and holes filled.

Some companies quote lower prices if they can recycle the metal. Be sure to hire a professional to avoid pool tile breaking, or damage to the pump or heater.

Glass Pool Enclosures Cost

Glass pool enclosures cost $30 to $65 per square foot or between $15,000 and $50,000 on average, depending on the size, type, and glass quality. Outdoor glass pool enclosures are all-season rooms that block pests and endure rain, snow, and harsh temperatures for year-round use.

Glass Pool Enclosures Cost

  • 200x stronger than glass. Plus, it’s lighter, more flexible, and insulates more efficiently.
  • Offers UV protection, and is chemical and weather-resistant
  • Withstand winds of 100 to 150 MPH and snow load between 25 and 70 PSF.
  • This synthetic glass is cheap and durable, but has short longevity. The panels undergo discoloration over time and can crack, chip, dent, and scratch easily unless its hard coated.
  • Polycarbonate panels are not sealed units, which can fill with dirt and water, causing fog and condensation build-up.

When It Is Time To Replace Old Or Worn Out Insect Screening

So, how do we determine when it is time to replace old or worn out screen material? As a general rule of thumb, a high quality insect screen last approximately 10 years. When the screen becomes worn, the vinyl coating begins to deteriorate and the fiberglass beneath is exposed. The high quality screen by Phifer® has a white fiberglass mesh that is visible as the vinyl erodes away.

Aluminum Screen Enclosures: Wind And Weather Durability

Since the screen panels are large, Strong wind doesn’t cast much strain on the aluminum structure frame. If the frame has been secured and anchored properly, it will take a lot of wind before any damage or failure occurs.

In the event of a major hurricane, there is a high possibility of severe damage to the enclosure. A strong tornado could easily destroy it.

Screens will need replacing occasionally from rips or tears in the screens or evaporating pool chemicals, causing the screen material to become brittle and tear. The pre-painted aluminum usually lasts for years before needing to be re-painted.

Things Every Consumer Needs To Know About Getting Their Pool Enclosure Rescreened

All pool enclosures will eventually need to be rescreened, whether the screens lifespan is 20 years or just 3. Weak or discolored screens detract from your homes value and usefulness without giving you anything valuable in return. Screens can become torn and damaged to the point that they no longer serve any purpose at all. As a pool enclosure specialist once put it, A screen with tears is like a boat with holes in the bottom.

Replacing the screen yourself is out of the question. Rescreening requires specialized knowledge and skills. At the same time, learning about the rescreening process can help you make better decisions when its time to have the job done. Here are 6 things you need to know about pool enclosure rescreening.

  • The right screen makes all the difference

When you request bids for your pool enclosure, you may get a wide range of prices. Its always tempting to choose a low bid. Yet, the difference in bids may have more to do with the quality of screen thats being used than it does with someone giving you a great deal. To be sure your new screen is worth the time and effort, you should stay away from cheap Artisan screen. Instead, choose Phifer screen or better.

Polyester screen is stronger than Artisan screen or even Phifer fiberglass screen. The manufacturers stand behind polyester screen with a 10-year warranty, but these screens often last 20 years or longer.

    The Benefits Of A Screen

    Repair Screen Enclosures

When most people consider a screen enclosure, usually one of the first reasons that come to mind for having one is: “It keeps the bugs out”. That reason alone is one of the top benefits of an enclosure.

There are many other ways a screen enclosure can enhance your swimming and outdoor living space experience. Let’s take a look at some of these benefits.

    • More Shade: The screens on the enclosure let plenty of sunlight in while preventing direct sun. This light filtering quality is not only healthier than being directly in the sun’s UV rays but it’s also more comfortable.
    • Child Safety: Helps better secure children and keep them within view
    • Leaves and Debris: Another great advantage. No leaves!
    • Atmosphere: Creates a sense of privacy or personal space
    • Bugsand Other Rodents: Screens do a great job keeping out the bugs, mice, snakes, and most other pests.

A screened-in pool will keep out insects, leaves, and provide shade.
