What Distance From My Pool Should I Install A Heat Pump

Install the heater as close to the filter as possible and approximately 25 feet away from the swimming pool. Installing the unit any farther may cause heat loss since tubing is underground. An “ideal” installation will have about 24″ of clearance around the unit with no obstructions above. We have seen many exceptions and if you believe you have one, call us and we can go over it.If you’re not sure where to install the heater pump, contact us to make sue that the capacity of the heater is adequate for your pool and the distance between the heat pump and filter.

Use A Solar Pool Cover During The Day

Yet one more way to harness the power of the sun. If youre going to be out of the pool for a while, float a solar pool cover or a solar blanket on it to both heat the water and retain that heat, depending on the type of cover you use.

If you feel a total-pool cover is too cumbersome to use frequently, consider getting a solar cover reel to make things easier. Or try using solar rings instead. Easy to deploy, easy to pick up and put away.

The Functionality Of Your Pool

Pool Heaters & Leisure Temp

Before you go out to buy your solar pool heater take a good look at your pool. See whether your swimming pool is a leisure pool or a regular one. If it is the former, then you would require the temperature somewhere around 90 degrees. If your pool is a gym-based pool, then it is ideal to keep the temperature a little colder, i.e.,80 to 85 degrees, which will ensure proper circulation.

Kids And Swimming Lessons

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends swimming lessons for kids starting at the age of four. and the Red Cross recommends a pool temperature of at least 84°F to conduct swim lessons for children.

This is to keep their bodies comfortable in a new environment, to keep their muscles warm and loose, and to prevent any breathing difficulties that can arise from too-cold water.

While you may not be offering formal swimming lessons in your pool, if youre trying to teach a young child to swim, consider raising the pool temperature, at least while this activity is taking place.

Important: Teaching a child to swim does not prevent drowning. When you have kids in or near the pool area, make sure theyre supervised at all times. Consider taking precautions to prevent tragedy, and perhaps investing in a couple of types of pool alarms for added safety.

Rating At 80 Degree Water / 80 Degree Air / 80% Humidity

Based on BTU ratings, the average consumer or pool dealer might conclude that the units tested above are essentially the same in performance, with Brand Y the most favorable. But a more in-depth analysis that takes into account the air temperature at which the heater turns off in the field reveals that AquaComfort is far and away the best choice. It could be late February in Phoenix, April in North Carolina, early May in Baltimore or St. Louis or mid-May in New England or the Midwest. With average daily overnight temperatures in the mid to upper 40s, Brand X and Brand Y cannot output heat overnight while AquaComfort does. The net effect:

  • Brand X puts about 1,600,000 BTUs into the pool daily
  • Brand Y puts 1,400,000 BTUs into the pool daily
  • AquaComfort puts over 2,000,000 BTUs into the pool daily

AquaComfort is clearly the choice when overall performance is the criteria, not test points chosen for the Florida Building Code. You dont purchase an automobile based only on their MPG ratings, why choose your pool heater that way?

When choosing a heat pump pool heater, do not be swayed by performance at test points where the conditions are rarely if ever encountered. Consider how the heat pump you choose will operate in real life conditions. If you do, we are sure that AquaComfort will be the correct choice.

What Is A Solar Pool Heater

Improved Solar Pool Heater – Full build

A solar pool heater is a type of heating device that harnesses the energy from the Sun to heat the water in your swimming pool. The water from the pool is forced across a special filter placed above the installed solar panels, which are either on the top construction or side of the swimming pool.

Solar heaters for the inground pool are the same as the traditional PV solar heaters. They have special pipes spread across the bottom surface of the swimming pool that ensure constant and uniform heating of the pool water. Many solar heating systems for swimming pools come with a special valve to control the flow, are equipped with sensors, and smartly operate, adjusting the temperature.

When you configure the temperature according to your needs, these sensors can measure the temperature of water generated from solar panels and adjust it according to your set value. If the water in the swimming pool is at a lower temperature, the heating device channelizes the water onto the solar collectors, which heat the temperature of this water. But when the water in the pool is warm or hot, the flow control valve switches off and reduces the amount of hot water being released into the pool.

Lastly, these pool solar panels are quite efficient, especially because the solar heating system is automated, and the process allows it to operate ideally and give you the desired output. So, you can enjoy a nice warm swim anytime you wish to.

Electric Element Pool Heaters

These types of heaters are usually built to draw their energy from electricity. They are easy to install. Furthermore, they work like electric kettles the same way there is direct heat transfer between the immersed element and the pool water. They are usually small in size, which makes them ideal for use where the pool is smaller in size. They are also the best to use where there is no gas supply. When it comes to cost, you will invest more in these than in the solar pool heaters. These are the best types of pool heaters to use in spas, because they are more compact and help the pool reach a high temperature in good time.

Senior Health And Safety

As we age, our bodies become less tolerant of drastic temperature changes, and more vulnerable to both heat and cold. This is particularly true in swimming pools where too-cold or too-warm water can not only be uncomfortable for seniors, but detrimental to their health.

When the seniors in your life are going to use your pool for leisure, consider raising the temperature to somewhere between 86°F and 88°F .

Water exercises can be particularly helpful for those with arthritis. The waters buoyancy means less stress on joints, and little risk of falling while exercising.

If anyone with arthritissenior or notwill be using your pool, theyll be most comfortable in temperatures between 84°F and 88°F . If they have limited function due to arthritis, theyll do better in even higher temperatures, somewhere between 86°F and 90°F .

Heat Pump Vs Pool Heater

Alternatives to the pool heat pump use burners and heat exchangers to heat the water and either burn piped gas, oil or propane. Pool heat pumps are the most environmentally friendly of these solutions because no combustion process is used. Solar heaters are a popular environmentally friendly solution with the lowest running costs. Solar heaters have no impact on the environment but, unfortunately, they are the least efficient pool heaters. Because they rely on the heat from the sun, solar heaters work best in places like Florida, but it cannot be used everywhere.

Advantages over combustion types

The running cost of a heat pump is lower than combustion heaters. Even the more energy efficient gas heaters do not offer savings that compare to heat pumps. If ground source heat pumps are viable where you live, the savings are even better.

Heat pumps require less maintenance than combustion types. Once a year, there is some inspection work to be done, and it must be cleaned out. This is something you can easily do yourself. Every three to five years, a professional installer may have to service it.

Heat pumps are safer because there is no burner or pilot light.

A heat pumps expected lifespan can be up to 50 years. But in real terms, the average life-span is somewhere between 14 to 15 years.

Disadvantages

Upfront, the heat pump is the most expensive solution. However, savings on their operating costs translate into long-term savings on running costs.

How Does A Heat Pump Work

If you search the internet, you will find hundreds of websites that try to explain how a heat pump works. Unfortunately, most are misleading. So Im going to explain it in a way that will help you understand the principles. Ill keep it short, stick to simple terms, and skip the complexities.

Well start with a simple, practical exercise. Reach behind your refrigerator while its running, and carefully feel the temperature in the cooling fins. Where the gas enters the fins, its warm enough to scald you. The technical name for these cooling fins is a condenser. To explain how it becomes so hot and how it relates to a heat pump, lets first mention two interesting phenomena:

  • When you release compressed propane from a tank, its icy where the gas escapes because it absorbs heat from the air as it expands.

These two principles form the basis of the refrigerator cooling system. A special refrigerant gas in a closed system is compressed to the point where it becomes a warm liquid . The warm liquid then moves through the condenser , this allows it to lose some of the latent heat. The cooler pressurized liquid then progresses through a restrictor, at the entry to the evaporator inside the refrigerator. The fluid expands into the evaporator to become a gas and, in doing so, absorbs heat from the inside of the refrigerator. Then the gas moves back to the compressor to complete the cycle.
